I was in desperate need of a hobby and really wanted to start taking a class in something. A friend showed me The Rhody Center’s website and I was so excited to see everything they had to offer. Dancing, instrument lessons/jam sessions for beginners to advanced, singing, kids classes, etc. I joined Singing Sirens as I always loved taking chorus in high school and have only dabbled in the occasional karaōke sessions since then. The class is so much fun, the instructor is awesome and makes you feel totally at ease, and you leave wanting to practice as much as you can! Going to class and singing is the highlight of my work week.

Where can you find affordable music lessons with instructors that really love what they’re doing and give you that extra personal attention? RIGHTHERE. Before starting my ukulele lessons, I had never played any instrument. Within a few weeks, I was comfortably playing chords and really enjoying the experience. Julie is an amazing instructor, truly dedicated to this nonprofit. They offer lessons for adults in music, dance, and vocals. There are children’s classes as well — you can even throw a birthday party! I would recommend trying it out to anyone who is wishing for a hobby or to check off an item from their bucket list.

Fun musical outlet for interesting instruments. I got a ukulele as a present but had a hard time getting started with YouTube alone. I joined the ukulele beginners group and now am going to do a private lesson then join the adult ukelele jam!

We were looking for dance classes for our daughter that would satisfy her and not make me crazy. Rhody Center is fantastic! Our kid likes dancing around the house doing everything from disco to belly dancing. So we didn’t want to put her in the basic ballet program. Plus, we wanted to avoid the expensive costumes, icky body image stuff, and the idea that dance is for girls. We couldn’t be more pleased. The Big Kid Boogie class has girls AND boys, moms and dads. It’s a blast, and the parents can join in. It puts me in a great mood, too. I also appreciate that it’s a drop-in class, so if we miss one here and there, it’s no big deal. The teacher, Julie, puts the kids at ease, and lets them get going with the music. The class is very relaxed, but my daughter is learning to follow the steps and also to get creative. Also, the space is beautiful — in the Pawtucket armory — and parking is easy. It’s right off the highway. When she’s a little older, I hope our daughter will explore more classes at Rhody Center with me!
