David has helped me return to my love of the piano, which began when I was in Kindergarten and couldn’t take my eyes off the teacher’s hands as she played. Our family couldn’t have a piano, so I studied accordion for four years and learned to read music. I bought a piano and took lessons in the 1980s, but gave it up when my son was born. Too many things to juggle with family and work. When I retired from 35 years in the technology area, I was given the gift of time to pursue volunteer efforts with more time, and to return to the piano! The drill and music books arranged by Jane Tan are a unique approach that I hadn’t seen when I took piano lessons as a working adult. David’s lesson plan for adults divides the time among Drills, Theory, and Music. Thus, each day, you have a variety of things to work on. David is a great coach! Each week, we go through the progress and work I’ve done during the week, make notes, and then we get to the music and he has very helpful ideas, which he demonstrates on his own piano, side by side with the one I’m playing on. David can pick up on where you are in your«piano life» and work out a plan of study that is just right for you! I’ve met some of David’s other students, and we are from all over the spectrum in terms of experience and skills, or lack thereof. In two years, I know I’ve learned a lot of new things about the piano, as well as feeling able to play music that I like. As well, because I am a «senior citizen» I know that I’m getting good brain work.
