If you’re trekking down from Aspen To Gunnison like I was, Paonia is a great halfway(or quarter way depending how you look at it) stop. However, to the average Californian, a town like Paonia doesn’t have much to do. This is where Homestead Market comes in. They feature a great variety of local products and rare meats that are tough to find anywhere else. Elk, buffalo, lamb, chicken, fish. They’ve got it all and in several varieties. If you’re just looking for snacks on the go, they’ve got local cheeses, jams, crackers among other things. Between the three of us, we just grabbed a bag of crackers, dried fruit, and goat cheese. The soft Avalanche goat cheese here is phenomenal. Most things are pricier than what you find at your local supermarket, but it’s well worth the expenditure. A small town store has to survive somehow, right? The lady who runs this place is very kind and will help you out with any questions you might have. Credit cards are accepted as well, which is always a plus.
