The Bross Hotel is exactly what I imagined a small b&b in Paonia would be like. The rooms are old-​fashioned in look but clean, warm and comfortable. Lots of dark wood, creaky stairs, antiques, rocking chairs on the front porch, nicely kept flower gardens and, of course, a resident ghost (a nice one, we were told). We stayed on the third floor, in the German Room, which had big windows and a firm queen bed. Breakfasts were very good — both cereal and hot dishes served buffet style. You’re not far from the center of town (nothing is, really) but it’s very quiet. Linda — the owner — is a little terse on the phone but overall, she was very helpful and makes a mean oatmeal soufflé. We stayed two nights in mid-​May and I’d stay again.

Comfortable small (10 rooms) B&B Inn in downtown Paonia. Excellent breakfast. We stayed four nights, and each morning there was a different breakfast casserole (vegetable/​cheese, french toast, chile relleno, and blintz soufflé — all were delicious) plus fresh local seasonal fruit, homebaked breads, homemade jams.
