In January 2013 the doors on the old one room school house that closed more than 114 years ago reopened thanks to the hard work of the Preservation Foundation of Palm Beach and approximately $ 50,000. A small historic marker on the side of the road marks the site it now calls home and part of the«living history» program of the surrounding community. The one-room schoolhouses of the era stressed discipline, moral values and the three R’s. can anyone remember those? The original location was approximately one mile north of the Royal Poinciana Bridge, on Lake Trail in Palm Beach. After the one room school closed in 1901 it became a tool shed on the John S. Phipps property and after decades of disrepair the Gardener’s Society started the restoration in about 1960. It’s well worth taking a few minutes to stop and check it out. I was quite surprised to find it had never been reviewed and not sure how many people really know of its existence and I can’t help but wonder where John Phipps kept his tools after he sold the shed that’s the real mystery here I feel everything else had been figured out.
