Paia Bay was so much fun! This was the first beach I visit on my trip on the island and I’m happy it was! Due to staying in Kula, it was only 20 minutes away! My boyfriend and I like to get down with the big waves which made it perfect for us to go body boarding! We got there around 5 pm which was just a few hours before sunset and when we caught it; it was something real special. This beach attracts more of a younger crowd especially with the Young Culture Center being located right there along with a skate park. The beach also tends to have no crowd after 6 pm which was perfect for us to feel like we had the whole view to ourselves. I visit this beach a few more times after my first!

The waves are crazy. The first day my bf convinced me to go in the water and swim with the waves. I survived but after 10 minutes of continuously holding my breath and swimming under the everlasting waves I was so tired! We came back the second time and the waves were even crazier. Lots of body borders. I sat and watched. Fun beach if you are a good swimmer.

A beach is a beach, right? Well, after about 10 days in Maui, I beg to disagree. Hit up this beach to people watch or boogie board, but theres not much else going for it. We stopped by here while in Paia for a late lunch before heading to the airport. Compared to the other beaches we visited, this beach was crowded and seemed dirty. It was fun watching everyone boogie board and surf, but otherwise, I’d skip it! The beaches in Hana and Wailea/Makena are superior, in my opinion!

Awesome boogie board spot and great for surfing on big north shore swells in the winter. It’s a beautiful beach and right in the middle of town. Easy to take a swim on my lunch break and cruise back to work. It’s typically a beach for the younger populations especially since there’s a skateboard park yards away. Once in awhile riff raff are hanging out here. I typically steer clear of this place at night.

Great beach! After a short walk this beautiful beach is just what we wanted — sandy shores that we could wade into the water and great views. Not crowded at all — when we got here there were about 5 other people and by the time we left there were 20 – 25 with plenty of space and room to go.

Love this beach! You’ll find that it’s mostly used by younger folks, and those interested in sponge boarding. That’s A-OK for me! I actually love the view of this beach, and the fact that it is dead smack in the middle of Paia. Can’t beat the location. I take guests here when they want to go in the water and just play around or swim. This is the perfect beach to bodyboard or swim in, but it can get some decent size waves. No snorkeling here, there is absolutely nothing in the water. [Trust me, I’ve looked!] But with no coral, it makes the swim perfecto.

love love love love LOVE. i spent every waking hour here. in my freetime, my friends and i would grab a spot in the shade and spend hours at paia bay. it’s not the ideal tourist beach. but it’s great for a local spot. the waves are pretty intense(for a calmer, more swimmer-friendly beach, try baldwin down the street) but are good for body surfing and boogie boarding. a local favorite for wave sports. the wind can kind of be a problem too. a lot of days the wind would blow sand harshly and bitingly at you as you laid there. we would spend days trying to get it out of our hair/ears/etc — or most times not even bothering. shade spots are quickly grabbed early in the afternoon so get there early. if you want to avoid the wind at all, take a spot on the grass — — but don’t expect an ocean view. i’m rating this a 3 because even though i am in love with this place, it’s not really a good spot for a leisurely day on the beach. it’s rough water, lots of sand-filled wind and more often than not inhabited by some sketchy folks/homeless.. . but alas, my heart will always have a place for paia bay.
