Sagamore Hill National Site Visitor Center

The tour was excellent, led by a very knowledgeable and friendly docent/​volunteer. Learned a lot about Roosevelt that is not in history books, or the ones I’ve read. Ordered tickets well in advance which made a difference, tour was full. Wish they offered earlier times online, which are first come first serve. The tours are small for a reason, keeping it manageable for one person to keep an eye on the group, and also parts of the house are small, even with 9 it gets crowded. A bit too cold in the wintertime, skipped the free museum. Then again, the house has no air conditioning (to preserve the house), so early spring/​late fall is probably best.

Today, Kids and I visited to Sagamore Hill, as known as the summer White House of Theodore Roosevelt. We got here on ten sharp, but people were already there and had to wait until 11:30 tour. You should come really early so you don’t need to wait much.
The house was beautiful, just finished renovation. The guide said they started to renovate mainly to put a/​c inside but after the research that might break the house so they just made wind through but it seems not be working, so be ready for heat and humidity when you are thinking to take a tour. Today was not too hot so it was good for me and kids. inside was full of treasures from all over the world, newest technology in that time of period, and hunting trophies. It was very interesting. The tour guide is very knowledgeable, very good explanations for each rooms.
We learned a lot about the president, too when we visited Orchard Museum. At the museum, Kids can get a booklet that has many questions about TR in the entrance, and after finish answer them, kids show it to the person in charge and get prize. I don’t tell what the prize was because I think it should be surprise, but my son loves it. Oh, one more small good thing, All bathrooms are very clean and water from the fuacets are lukewarm. Nice.
Overall I really loved this place.

While driving through Oyster Bay, I kept seeing signs to Sagamore Hill. Quite honestly, I didn’t know what it was, but given our curious minds, my daughter continued driving to follow the signs up to Sagamore Hill. Turns out, it was the home of 26^th President, Theodore Roosevelt, from 1885 until his death in 1919. The house and its surrounding farmland became the primary residence of Theodore and Edith Roosevelt for the rest of their lives. Sagamore Hill became known as the «Summer White House» during the seven summers (1902 – 1908) Roosevelt spent there as President. Turns out, Sagamore Hill is also an animal preserve, too. «Teddy,» being quite the lover of animals, stated that forever and ever, animals are ALWAYS welcome on his 83 acres of property. Yours, mine, anybody’s. FOREVER. That is a really cool thing.
Sadly, we arrived after 5 p.m., so the buildings were closed, but there were plenty of things to see outdoors. Beautiful, well kept grounds. Next time I’m in town, especially if my husband is around, we’ll return, and maybe within the hours to see the interior of his house. Too bad our little doggies won’t be. They’d love it here !!

Get here very early! House tours sold out for the whole day by 11am. Tickets are first come, first serve.
There’s a free museum you can tour. but if you come from a far distance you’ll want to see the whole thing.

The home of Teddy Roosevelt on 83 acres of primo Oyster Bay Cove land. The house is closed for renovations till the middle of July but the grounds and tours are open and free. Hard to believe you are in Nassau County when you are up here. Friendly staff and you can self tour using your cell phone to get information at each point of interest on the property.

We came here specifically because TR decreed that the land must always be open to pets and, having a pet that was in desperate need of an adventure, this hit the spot.
We walked on the little nature trail and ended up at the harbor. When it’s high tide, be careful! The land floods a little so it’s kind of soggy. We had to trample some dune grass to get to the little beach. Though it says not to unleash your dogs and it also says no swimming, it’s quite possible that we let the dog off the leash. But, you didn’t hear it from me. And if you get in trouble from the ranger, it’s not my fault!
There are a lot of little buddies running around the property and all over the beach. It’s always nice to see dog owners out and about! All the dogs were friendly and well behaved when we were there! :)
The actual grounds around the house are very nice. Perfect for a little picnic. In fact, several families were having lunch around the trees. The house is currently closed {and you can’t bring pets inside it}, but the outside was very pretty.
BRING BUG SPRAY! There are huge ass horse flies down by the water! The one thing that marred our otherwise lovely time was getting chomped!

We chose not to take the house tour since my friends and I are not impressed by flagrant rabid animal blood lust, big sticks and what not… and we had just missed it and didn’t feel like waiting around for the next one. So instead we spend the days as gentiles, perusing the free museum, strolling the nature trail and splashing around in the private Roosevelt beach at Cold Spring Harbor… nobody got naked… you can’t prove it… and it was only for like five seconds…
There are also domestic turkeys poking around… and those suckers sure can run if you try to chase them, which we did… all in all a pretty fun day!

Theodore Roosevelt is a symbol of masculinity, honor, adventure, duty, sacrifice, and a bunch of other things no one gives a shit about anymore. He happens to be a personal hero of mine so I had to check out his house.
It was the coolest place I’ve ever been. There are Elephant tusks, Bison heads, a Polar Bear rug, giant Montana Elk heads, guns, swords, and all kinds of neat things that would make your average squeamish, politically correct dumb-​ass shit their pants. The sabre and gloves that TR used in Cuba during the Spanish American War are still lain across the antlers of an Elk, where TR put them himself after coming back from war.
There was no one else there except for two of us, so we didn’t have to walk around with people and their screaming kids. We had our own tour guide show us around, which was cool. I think it’s great that the vast majority of people would rather spend tons of money in amusement parks, casinos, and other places of obscene commercialism and base sensory stimulation than go to important landmarks in their free time because then I don’t have to wait behind them and their screaming kids
