2 words Saurekraut Balls! Must stop if in the area! The atmosphere is awesome! You go down stairs to the underground restaurant which because it’s different, is so cool. The furnishings and décor gives you the sense of being in another place. The staff was great. Very friendly, helpful and all pleasant. They have a lot of German beer options. I’m not much of a beer person so I can’t help you there. I was a bit bummed not to see any specialty beverages, but it’s a German restaurant, they have beer. Haha There was a few of us, so don’t think I ate the following things ask myself. Potato pancakes, delicious. The side of applesauce is different and so good combined. Hungover fries,(insert photo of a drooling Homer Simpson here) best fry appetizer I have ever had. The saurekraut balls are the best thing I have had in so long. There are a lot of flavors packed up in the balls but not like an over powering amount, it’s a good perfect mixture. The kind of thing that you literally close your eyes and enjoy. Wish this place want so far away from where I live or we would have to stop by often.

I am so happy we found this unique place in the basement! I was a little skeptical of going down into a basement to eat but was pleasantly surprised. The food was terrific, I had the Bratwurst meal and my husband had the pulled pork dinner. The beer was also a huge plus with the large variety of German beers and domestic beer. Service was excellent! We will definitely be coming back!

Probably the only good restaurant in Oxford that I would recommend to anyone. Their food is spectacular, their beers are great, and the service is awesome!

Well, we are new to Oxford, and I am trying to balance what I want in food with what is available here, realizing this is a college town with college food. This place is in the basement, dark wood, dark booths. It was full, obviously, of college students. The bar service at first totally ignored us, and then one of the bartenders saw us and became very helpful and attentive. When we got a table, the waiter was friendly. I ordered one of the schnitzels because… German. My husband ordered the steak. My chicken schnitzel was an enormous piece of panko-breaded meat, not particularly thin, smothered in a dark, thick mushroom gravy, on top of homemade noodles that were good but incredibly oily. Since I am over 40, this is the kind of food that seems intent on killing me. It was good, but had I eaten even half of it, I would really have suffered. So in general, I would probably not go back, but I can see why college students who need something in their stomachs before or after drinking would really dig it.

I went here with a few friends, eight in total, and we were seated automatically with no wait. Our server, Sam, was super friendly and checked in on us regularly but not annoyingly. He was an excellent server. The soda had a solid amount of syrup and was well carbonated, overall very good. I got the pulled pork sandwich and It was good, yet the meat was a little dry. I liked how the bun was toasted as well and it held the meat so it wasn’t overflowing. Overall a great experience, will be sure to go again :)

Avoid brunch at all costs. The mistake was being placed in a corner booth where the waitress continuously forgot about us. She forgot about the Bloody Mary for 20 minutes and then claims they were busy so our food took 45 mins — 1 hour to come out. The meal was nothing complex — eggs, sausage, toast, and home fries. After considering settling for just the drink and walking out, the food arrived. Very poor quality — it doesn’t feel like it is agreeing with my stomach.

Waited 20 mins for a Bloody Mary… Our server said she forgot about us because we were sitting in a corner table(thanks?). In addition, we waited an hour for crappy food. I ordered the red brick special with scrambled eggs, brat patty, sourdough toast and home fries. The scrambled eggs were runny and the brat patty was pink. The toast was crunchy and home fries had a variety of burnt and undercooked. Never coming back to this place again. I’d give 0 stars if I could.

In a small town, this place is a hidden treasure. Follow the sketchy stairs downstairs to find a hidden underground German bar. Schnitzel, Spätzle, and Apple streusel OHMY. If you like beer this place is the place to go, with a wide selection of German beer from light beers like the Paulaner to darker beers like the Salvator. Tuesdays are half off ½ liter, Wednesdays are steak nights, and Thursdays are $ 3 off liters and live music with Accordion Dave! And make sure to request the sexy Indian server Ama ;)

Awesome German food. Try the schnitzel — all are great. They also have a really good selection of German beers on tap.

Went to Oxford Ohio on kind of a whim and had looked at the various restaurants in the Miami University college town. Of course it might have not been too wise to visit a college town on a Saturday evening after a big football game but that is another story. Went to Steinkeller for something different. Steinkeller is a German restaurant that features German beer and German fare. The restaurant — bar is actually in a basement down two flights of stairs. I didn’t look for nor see any handicap elevator to get down and back up to street level. As was noted above going to a college town on a Saturday evening might not have been a great idea if one is looking for a quick meal. Our party of three was too small to get one of the larger tables in the middle of the L shaped restaurant and all of the booths on the side of the place were full. We were directed to the bar which is not large with too few stools for a larger crowd. The décor is German themed with real wood booths and tables. We were almost ready to leave when our booth came open. The people at the entrance assigning tables/booths seemed to not be the most happy workers in the world. The server was excellent though. He went through the various beers and we had two dark brews which we can’t remember the names mainly because we told him to surprise us within the dark beer category. Mine had a slight chocolate/coffee taste but was very good. The other beer was also rated as very good. We had a reuben, a pork belly reuben and keller salad. The reuben was rated as possibly the best she had ever had. The corned beef was tender with no hint of gristle one typically gets with most corned beef. The toppings on it were a perfect fit for this sandwich. I had the pork belly reuben which features a wonderful red cabbage slaw along with pork slices and Swiss cheese and thousand island dressing. It was different from a typical reuben but this variation had the perfect match of ingredients. Both reubens were meal sized and come with chips. The Keller salad filled a whole plate Three meals with drinks came to $ 45.00 which isn’t bad. The keller salad was also rated as very good. By the time we left the place was packed with students, alumni and others. Would recommend Steinkeller for a good German meal.

There is a paucity of brunch fare in Oxford, so I was excited to try out the new brunch menu here. Sadly, the only vegetarian option is potato pancakes. I don’t happen to be a huge fan of potato pancakes, so I asked if I could put together some«sides» as my brunch plate. I was told that that is not allowed. I asked if I could add scrambled eggs as a side to my potato pancakes and was told that the kitchen won’t scramble eggs here. Fried eggs they can do, though. If you are a fan of fried pig meat and eggs, you will be in heaven here. Otherwise abandon all hope all ye who enter.

One of my Oxford favorites. The beer samplers are the way to go if you are not sure on what to get. Sauerkraut balls and pretzel are great appetizers. Reuben is my go to meal. I highly recommend for anyone looking for quality German beer and food.

Love the beer selections! Not really a fan of German food, so I can’t comment here. My friends seemed to enjoy the schnitzel. Great atmosphere. Thursday and Tuesday beer specials. The beer is pretty expensive, but where else can you get imported German beers in Oxford?

We’ve been back a number of times and to be honest only the beer was worth the trip. The food just isn’t that good.

Dinner at Steinkeller was a complete and utter mistake. I ordered the beef goulash and the spätzle was just plain mush. It’s the consistency of baby food. I had to add an absurd amount of salt and pepper just to make the dish edible. That said, the beers on tap are amazing and fortunately you can order a maß of beer, just like you can in München. So, by my way of thinking, if you drink enough beer and you’re buzzed enough, the flavor of the food won’t matter at all. …or so I thought… 60% done with my beer and the food isn’t getting any better. My advice… skip the food and just go for the beer. For the beer selection, I give this place 4 stars, but the food is 2 stars, so splitting the difference = 3 stars.

Great beer! We were able to get a table on Graduation day! Amazing Pretzels! Our other food was ok– I didn’t hear anyone saying«WOW» and my turkey sandwich was good, but not great. Beer is a highlight– available in ½ liter and liter sizes. As my mom said«I would totally bring this beer home with me.»
