Without getting into the ethical, philosophical, or moral reasons why you should never, ever buy a pet from a pet store, you should know that the Oxford Animal Shelter is a great place to adopt a cat or dog. We adopted our first dog almost two years ago. After a great deal of careful consideration, we decided to adopt a second dog. After looking online for months, we found a couple of dogs at the Oxford shelter that we really liked. All of our calls and e-mails were answered promptly and courteously. We met with the shelter director and the prospective hounds. We filled out a reasonable application, and were contacted the next day letting us know we’d been approved for a dog. The total cost? A $ 50.00 adoption fee. Aside from the fact we now have a second wonderful dog, the people that run the Oxford shelter are VERY committed to the animals, but they are not militant zealots. They don’t require huge adoption fees or demand home visits. They also tell you if the adoption doesn’t work out, you can bring your pet back. It’s sad to think that could happen, but at least they’re honest that it’s an option. Thanks to the Oxford shelter, we’ve rounded out our clan. Definitely contact them if you’re looking for a pet! I can’t say enough about dogs from shelters.
