This was the one place I would come to when I was living in Ottumwa from 1994 – 1997. The mall was severely limited in stores most of them were small end shops that kind of fell on the wayside. It was another teenage hangout and giving the fact that the other malls people went to were in Oskaloosa(Osky to the natives) or in Burlington that was close by. You had to go to Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, Iowa City or Waterloo to go to any of the larger malls. I didnt really care too much for Herbergers which was about as close to high end as they were going to see. They had maybe one restaurant in the entire mall and that was this place called Diamond Dave’s-which has since closed. They didnt have much of a selection since the mall was overcharging rent and many stores had since closed down and moved elsewhere to places where they could generate an income. The second anchor store which was Wal Mart moved down the road and out of the mall. If the mall had fixed itself up back when I started school at Indian Hills Community College it would have been a much better experience since the mall was just another hangout spot for the local high schoolers since half of them couldnt really go anywhere and the only place to socialize was the mall. I dont know how the mall looks now after having been gone from Ottumwa for about 16 years not sure if they lowered the rent enough to attract new business. Either way many of the natives usually go shopping up north where they get better service, prices, and selections in clothing stores, restaurants and other things. You would think that a mall like this would appease to people being situated in a college town. Not to mention one Unilocaler saying something about the appearance of the mall and appearance is everything to a shopper and when I went there the appearance looked like the mall stepped out of the 80s and forgot to revamp itself to the 90s.

This mall leaves something to be desired, and as a local, I go in there only when I have to. The turnover is so great because the management company overcharges people in rent. The whole place is something out of the early 90s with hard surfaces to sit on, ugly tiling for the floors and slate blue colors throughout. No wonder everyone everyone in town opts to go to Des Moines for shopping– better stores, better selections, and better prices in the stores(because they aren’t being overcharged for rent). Maybe if the mall updated it’s look inside and out, we could get some higher-end stores in our mall. The only time I’ve seen the Mall parking lot full is right before Christmas time– most of the other times it’s only ¼ of the way full, ½ of that being people who work in the mall.
