Well i was completely underwhelmed by the food. I had French Onion Soup and a Chicken Caesar Salad. The famous breadsticks were unevenly cooked, pale as new dough in many places and one looked edible as it was browned on top. The soup was a miasma of barely flavored broth, small pieces of onion and gelatinous goo at the bottom. The puff pastry on top was far from what i expected and again barely browned. The salad had the absolute minimum of dressing and the chicken looked to be cut up cold chicken breast browned in a pan, and thoroughly dried out as a result. The croutons are so big and anemic looking they could substitute for marshmallows. I will not be going again. Come on folks get it together…

I have been to this place twice and both times it’s been a good time. It’s a Scottish cuisine restaurant and bar. The first time I went we got a server who was new to food service but he was very attentive and when he got in the weeds he wasn’t above asking for help. I ordered the Haggis the first time I was there but I didn’t read further and found out they need to be ordered 24 hours in advance so I got the Sheppards pie instead, it was pretty decent, had to plan a second trip because I wanted that Haggis. It’s something new I had never seen on a menu. Went back and ordered that Haggis the day before, this time we got the Lead server and I apologize but I forgot his name. Very on the ball. He let me know that in five years mine was the 7th Haggis ordered, I think maybe people are scared of what they have heard about it. Some people say Scottish cuisine is food made on a dare lol. Traditional Haggis is lamb meats mostly heart, kidney’s, lungs and other leftover parts stuffed into a sheep stomach with Barley and boiled for 3 hours. At Macphee’s its mildly seasoned lamb meat and oatmeal in a natural sausage casing boiled for 3 hours and served Flambé lit form 151 rum, the rum added to the flavor and it was quit good, but oh my was it thick, I forced the last 3 bites but I was unable to finish it. Over all it was a good experience… although being a chef I would tweek that recipe with some rosemary and some mint jelly on the side because I like to enhance gamey tasting foods. The bread sticks are very poofy and delicious, artichoke dip was great, cheese sticks were cheese sticks and the beer selection was fairly decent. Guiness, Killians, but I have to go back again because they have been sold out of Belhaven(a Scottish ale) both times I have been there… ooh maybe I’ll bring my own mint jelly next time. So… if you get the bug for something different and very homey feeling and full of comfort foods I highly recommend Macphee’s.

Having lived in NYC for the past decade post-college, you’d think my childhood love of MacPhee’s breadsticks would have died down. It hasn’t. It’s only intensified. I stop in for a soup or salad and an order(or two, if I’m feeling crazy) of the delicious breadsticks and the addictive cheese dip. Seriously the breadsticks and dip are crack-level addictive. The staff is always very friendly and I always look forward to my semi-annual visit home to Ortonville for MacPhees. Love this place.

My husband and I just moved to Ortonville and we took our friends, their three kids and our daughter to dinner at MacPhee’s. Everything we ordered was great. But the soup… the potato and bacon, was amazing! The kids devoured their mac n cheese, and I had the spehard’s pie, which is just awesome. Savory, seasoned right, creamy mashed potatoes and a wonderful, thick hearty gravy. Others had the fish and chips(hubby said they were great!) and the smothered chicken which my friend loved. They make a mean Long Island Iced Tea, and our service-from the waiter to the manager coming over to see how our meal was, was suburb! We’ve found our local hangout!

I drive by this place everyday and decided to try it out. I had the salmon rockefeller and wasn’t expecting to much. the salmon filet is about twice the size of any other restaurant I’ve ever ate at! and the toppings!!! spinach, onion, pepper, and BACON! you can’t take a bite out of this and have the same taste! overall this is a really good place to eat and I’ll definitely come back. gave it 4 stars just for some quirky things like plating.

Ended up at MacPhee’s for dinner with the work crew. Scottish theme and food, I’m pretty sure. They start you right off with fat, doughy breadsticks that draw rave reviews from the few who have reviewed this place. They were good, of course, they’re covered with butter & salt. Nothing to go too nuts about. I ordered Chicken Bridies, not knowing what it was but from the menu description it seemed pretty close to being a pot pie. Cream of mushroom soup with the entrée was decent. The Chicken Bridies themselves were, to me, the perfect comfort food! The flaky pastry that wrapped up the chicken, onion, peas and gravy was absolutely delicious. If ever in the area again I would definitely be sure to come back!

Went out for dinner last night looking to satisfy a craving for fried food. Decided on MacPhee’s in Ortonville. The weather was nice so we sat on the new looking outdoor patio which was pleasant in spite of looking at the business next door. Once I saw the menu, I had to forego the craving for the new seafood burger and side order of homemade sweet potato fries. Both were worth the change of mind. The seafood burger was crab cake with shrimp and a sweet and tangy dressing that complimented the fish nicely. OMG, the sweet potato fries were the best I’ve ever had! Hand cut and deep fried so that they were slightly crisp outside and soft and flavorful inside and nicely seasoned with a brown sugar and sea salt(?). My hubby chose the honey walnut glazed grouper with baked potato and fresh vegetables and was equally delighted with his choice. The breadsticks and cheese dip were excellent to start the meal and $ 2.99 glasses of house wines are unheard of! Worth the trip!

Called ahead to order their breadsticks. They told me I didn’t have to call ahead that they always have breadsticks ready. Well I got there and had to wait 20 minutes for breadsticks! Very disappointed in the service I received! The breadsticks are awesome but the service is horrid!

If there’s a Heaven, I hope it has MacPhee’s breadsticks. Then again, they’re so good they could easily be considered a deadly sin… I have now gorged on buttery doughy goodness twice, and while I’d like to say that’s all I had to eat and nothing more, that would be a lie. No sense on overdoing it on the sins, so here’s what else I savored: Chicken Bridies = Fantastic. My wife went with the beef bridies and they were just as good. Flavorful, gravy packed pastries with deliciously seasoned meat. On my second visit here I went with the raspberry coconut chicken. Yes. YES. Perfectly coconut crusted chicken breast drizzled in a raspberry sauce. It was a tropical party in my mouth on a cold winter day. To make myself(lie to myself?) feel better about all the fried and doughy treats, I had the fresh vegetables as a side. Also perfect. The next time I’m at MacPhee’s, I’ll probably order the coconut chicken again. After, of course, two baskets full of breadsticks(I kid you not, they’re the best ever).

You know how people say, «I’m in the mood for some Mexican food tonight»? or «How about some Italian for dinner?» Well, nobody ever says, «I sure could go for some Scottish food tonight!» or «Haggis for everyone!». Yeah, because the Scots aren’t world renowned for their culinary delights. But … If you like shepherd’s pie, make the trip out to MacPhee’s. Hand down, best I have ever had. Now that I am writing about it, I think I have to get out there again, and soon. That shepherd’s pie is good re-heated too. And it is 90 degrees outside right now, yet that plate of shepherd’s pie is calling to me in a thick Scottish accent. It’s a Scottish-themed restaurant, not something you see every day. Haggis? Yep. They have it. Though I have never tried it. You have to order it 24 hours in advance, so don’t expect it to be available if you just show up and order it. Not that I imagine it is a doorbuster of a menu item. However, they have a LOT of other, non-Scottish food — there actually is only a few items on the menu that are Scottish. 90% of the menu is not Scottish. And yes, the other food really is very good. Really. You won’t be disappointed. And yes, the bread sticks are fantastic, carb-filled, warm, go-straight-to-your belly bundles of goodness that you will finish in a blink of an eye and then eat another one. And another. And then the wait staff will ask if you want more, and you will emphatically say YESYESYES. Waitstaff is excellent — friendly, warm and efficient. These employees know what they are doing and seem to enjoy it. It is a really good, solid restaurant that you will not be disappointed with. If you are one to be adventurous enough to actually want to eat haggis, this is YOUR place! Otherwise, go with the beef medallions, the chicken, even with the pasta. Yum.

This restaurant is on the smaller side, but the booths are comfy and the waitstaff is consistently good. The décor is nothing fancy, but it doesn’t really need to be. Pizza is yummy, but the big draw(and probably at least a third of their business) is the breadsticks. Waiters bring them out in basketloads, free and fresh with any entrée, or you can get them to-go. My mom made the mistake of bringing two dozen to a holiday get-together one year, and now they’re a staple at family gatherings — we just bought 5 dozen last week to take to a birthday party! Get your order with the original cheese dip(or ranch, if you’re my sister) and you really can’t go wrong.
