Tony’s Bakery is located on Forsyth Rd in Winter Park, a few blocks south of University Blvd. A friend has been picking up her freshly baked pita here for years and raving about how wonderful these pitas are, so I popped in for a pita fix. Regular pitas are made most days and wheat pitas are made on Wednesdays. This is a popular place, so if you know you are heading over for pitas, it’s wise to call in with your order ahead of time. Tony’s is owned by a husband and wife, the wife was manning the phones and storefront on my visit. I picked up fresh from the oven, still warm, regular pitas and browsed the small storefront for some other items. I left with Falafel mix, a tub of Kefir and some curry powder. The owner pointed me to her preference of Falafel mix and made sure I knew how to make them. Seeing my goodies, she laughed and said I was causing her to have Falafel sandwich cravings. I spied some other goodies to check out on future trips and left with my purchases and a smile. That night I made tzatziki with the Kefir(Garlic, lemon, chopped fresh dill mixed into the Kefir, then add chopped cucumbers.) And made the falafel according to the package and the owners tips.(Dump both packets into a bowl, add 1 cup water, stir and let sit for 30 min-45 minutes until thick.) I fried them up and assembled our Falafel sandwiches on the fresh pita, adding some chopped tomato and onion to finish them off. OHMY. This pita was amazingly tender, I’m now forever spoiled for the stuff in the grocery store. Easy to fold in half for a sandwich or slice in half and stuff. I’ll be buying that delish falafel mix again soon! The pita stayed fresh and tender for several days when put in a ziplock.
