When we recently spotted a small sign for Dakota Farms on the side of the road, we quickly looked it up and knew we had to stop in. A local farm within our own zip code?! Hell, yeah! We stopped in yesterday and instantly fell in love with the place. Right now, it’s just a tiny little storefront, but it’s full of organic fresh veggies, local honey, teas, rice, soaps, fresh milk, chicken, beef, eggs, butter, yogurt, and even handmade greeting cards. Everything is locally raised/farmed, and organic — and with the exception of the meats, the prices are all on par, or better with what you’d find at the grocery store. The meats, however, are farm fresh, and look to be a much better quality than anything you’d get at your local grocery, so the price difference is probably warranted(we didn’t get any this time, so I can’t say for sure). We spent some time talking with one of the owners and her daughter, and they were very friendly, explaining the farm, the business, and their plans for the future. It can be noted that while their website sort of implies that most of their products are grown/raised by themselves, much of it actually comes from other local farms, and they’re acting as a sort of farmers market. Not really an issue, but a little confusing based on what I understood from the website. We’ll be back next week! Note: If you’re coming from Avalon Park, Google Maps is currently outdated and takes you the long way around via Old Cheney Highway. You can shave off a lot of time by turning at Golden Isle Blvd(across from the Spring Isle neighborhood).
