I love antiquing, but I don’t do it often enough to say that I’m an expert. When I moved to the Orland Park area I heard that their downtown wasn’t as cute as Tinley Park, but there were a few antique shops. I drove by these shops on occasion and they didn’t really look like much. It wasn’t until a friend of mine was visiting that I worked up the courage to venture into this store, and I was pleasantly surprised. The General Store has every kind of antique: furniture, clothes, books, kitchenware, toys, and the list goes on. One trouble I’ve found with antique shops is that they try to pack so much into a tiny space that it’s hard to find anything, not so with the General Store. Everything is set out in booths(for the individual dealers) and it’s all quite easy to navigate. It’s a big enough space that even if there are a lot of people in the store it would fine to walk around and browse. There’s even a basement filled with wonderful furniture pieces(and other things as well). I walked away with a polk-a-dot pitcher and a great pair of black heels. When I was paying I noticed that there is a wish list. If you are a regular antiquer or are looking for something specific there’s a list to put it on and all the dealers see this list and will keep an eye out for you. I love this feature, it just makes it that much more personable. The one complaint is payment. They don’t take debit/credit, only cash or check. And if you pay with a check you have to write a different check for each dealer. So be prepared when you go in to have a lot of cash or a good supply of checks if you are going to buy a lot.
