Love the Orange Coast Lariats, aka OCLs. I started Square Dancing a few years ago after enjoying getting into a quick lesson demo at my Church the evening of our annual Chili Cookoff. Square Dancing was so much fun, I found a lesson on Wednesday nights. But then when I moved to the City of Orange, the Lariats are just down the block from me, 5 minutes, 7 minutes if the traffic light is red. I just switched clubs. A very fun and friendly environment, there are always hugs to be had anytime you come here for a class night or attend one of their dances in Garden Grove. Yummy light refreshments vary each night I’m there. I’ll take some pix of that and share that here after going to class tonight. Social Factor: High Very friendly people. Square Dancing in general as a style is known for the culture of friendliness, much more so than most of the Ballroom Dance styles, although I do enjoy those, too. I’ve made some truly wonderful friends. And guess where I met my life partner? Yup, at a SD class. Frugal Fun If you’re on a budget, and who isn’t these days? Your first class is free. Thereafter, classes here are just $ 6. Note: At the classes, you want to learn to dance with dancers who have been dancing for years, so you’ll often see the older members at class. However, the Square Dancers in their teens, 20s-40s you’ll meet and see at more of the dances. It’s quite nice that the dance class atmosphere is more about friendships and minus the meat market PUA scene you can experience at some of the ballroom dance classes I’ve been to. Makes learning way more comfortable. Class starts in September.
