I was a regular but after the crap service I received last night through delivery, I no longer will be. I order extra of something, I expect it with my order, not the next f**king day. I called and said I wanted my tip and the extra money they charged me for it last night, they say it’ll be on my account in a few days, come home and they delivered my missing item… Still want my money back, I have no use for this now! Don’t make me contest the whole payment at the bank, I will.

OK, I’m old. Went to SUCO from ’80-’84, and was touring state colleges with my 17 year old daughter. Oneonta was on the tour list, and they were all discussing what they wanted for lunch. I was going to remain silent, but finally said that my one request was to go back to Sal’s, because I liked the pizza 30+ years ago. Since I had been doing all of the driving, they let me have my way. Saw a special on the wall, and it was a large pie, 2 liter bottle of soda, and 18 wings for $ 25. I want my wings as hot as they can be made, but not my family. They let us split up the order, so I got hot, and they got BBQ and honey BBQ(they weren’t sure which would be better). My daughter, who was with her friend, was embarrassed that I made them go, but she loved it! Even back in the 80s, I was always impressed with how decent Oneonta pizza was. I’m used to the wonderful pizza of Long Island and NYC, and many places upstate serve the equivalent of white bread, ketchup, and american cheese, and call it pizza(ok, I exaggerate a bit, but I’ve had some bad pizza outside of lower NY!) This fresh, hot, plain pie compared very favorably with the pizza that we get on Long Island. We could taste grated parmesan mixed in with the mozzarella, which I think is great. The wings were run of the mill, but still good(family decided that the BBQ was much better than the honey BBQ). My experience was very good, and the fact that my very fussy daughter enjoyed made my day. The place was a bit run down, and the décor left a lot to be desired, but I didn’t go there because of the décor. It’s pizza, but good pizza!

Sal’s is the best. Amazing pizza, open late and they serve beer. Get a cold cheese slice and you’ll go home happy. It may be loud and late night you may have a few drunkards walking through, but they don’t discriminate. Do not expect table cloths and fine dining and you’ll be happy.

Sorry Sals but you’ve lost it. We have LOVED Sals for years. Even calling it the best pizza ever for most of times. But recently quality has gone down. Yesterday we got a salad that was the opposite of fresh — funky tasting, mushy vegetables. Yuk. Then there was the plain pizza we ordered ahead. We picked it up and it was obvious a piece had been taken from it and filled in with an older piece that had Italian herbs on it when the rest didn’t. Weird gross no no no. Bye Sals. You used to be awesome.

I was born and raised in NYC, where a good«well done» pie is a dietary staple. When I first relocated to an area 9 miles from Oneonta, finding pizza that was acceptable was a must. I tried just about every pizzeria within 30 miles of Oneonta, and always received a sad excuse of dough, sauce and cheese. I was at my wits end, and found myself turning to(it feels like a sacrilege just saying the name of the pizza chain) Pizza Hut, to try to stem my craving for the type of pizza I was raised eating. I couldn’t get a regular cheese or pepperoni pie there, because it was just wrong(in so many ways, but taste and texture were chief among them), so I would be forced to get a Buffalo Chicken Pizza or something of that sort. After nearly 4 years of torture someone recommended that I try Sal’s, and I haven’t looked back. I found a problem with the round pie until I knew how to order it properly. When asking for my pie to be made well done(almost burning the bottom), their pizza gets the near perfect crispness to chewy ratio of a pizza from The City(or «downstate» as many locals here refer to NYC). I can now get a regular cheese or a pepperoni pizza and not have any regrets. Their Sicilian, or square, pie is close, but is lacking something. I think it is all my years of going to Spumoni Garden in Brooklyn that has completely ruined any other Sicilian pie for me. Sal’s par cooks their square crust, and as I feel that might be needed up here, it loses something in translation. I have to admit that I was never all that fond of Sicilian pies to start with, so I am happy sticking to my round wonderful pizza pies. I have never eaten in the pizzeria, and someone has always picked my order up and brought it to my vehicle(my house is too far for delivery), so I am sorry that I am unable to comment on the interior of the shop.

I have a thing about cleanliness, but the pizza at Sal’s is so good, that I overlook it enough to get a slice(or 8) here whenever I am in town. If you haven’t guessed by my opening line, Sal’s is kinda gross. It has zero atmosphere and décor, and they’ve given just a touch more effort to cleaning the booths, but why should they? The clientele is mostly drunken students at 1AM. I advise turning a blind eye and sneaking in there at lunch time for some take out. The place has been owned by the same family since it opened and that recipe will likely die when they do, so get some of the deliciousness while you can!

Great late night pizza source. Delicious pizza in all flavors. Décor and cleanliness are such that germophobes should eat on the curb outside. My favorite pizza joint in the area.

Sal’s is a staple of my childhood and now adulthood. Their pizza is delicious and the staff are awesome. I’ve never had bad service or bad food in my lifetime from Sal’s. I love their plain cheese and white pizzas. Their Sicilian is also both crispy and chewy and salty and sweet and delicious. And the meatball sub is to die for. The décor is nothing to talk about, but when you have so many drunk, obnoxious, and destructive college kids coming in and out every night, hell-bent on trashing the place, a couple of old tables and orange booths are appropriate and do the job. I recommend Sal’s over every other pizza joint in Oneonta(and there are a lot of them).

Never been disappointed with their generous affordable pizzas with crazy unbelievable toppings, but decided to eat there sober… That’s when my life changed for the worst! Just kidding, but kinda serious. Just don’t go there for a cold sub unless quantity supersedes quality. Their turkey sub was 90% meat and 10% toppings… I love epic meal time on YouTube, but I like to eat epic meal I live to a normal age time. Sals made my health insurance go up, but who can I blame but myself really?

Have you ever checked the back of the restaurant? From 2010 – 2012, I had the unfortunate experience of having to park back there because I had an apartment right next to them. The dumpster is always overflowing with garbage, they get trash all over the parking area, and you can literally see it draining down the drain pipe in the parking lot whenever it rains. The inside is dirty, as well. To top it all off, Sal’s pizza is the worst pizza I’ve ever had the misfortune of eating. I ordered two large pizzas from them, and I threw most of it away because I just couldn’t eat it. Some of the employees tend to be loud and rude. They could often be heard screaming and yelling in the parking lot at 1:00AM, and one of them even put a huge dent in the hood of my car by sitting on it! I mean no disrespect to NY — but if Sal’s pizza is the best representation of «real» NY pizza, then it is my personal opinion that«real» NY pizza is horrible.

Cold Cheese Pizza! Very good — something you’ve probably never had before and may never have again — a slice of plain pizza, with a huge handful of shredded mozzerella cheese pulled out of the fridge and put on top right before you’re served. It’s a neat idea and the hot/cold thing works very well. I don’t think I’ll ever pass through Oneonta again, but if I do, I would stop and grab a slice.

I attended Hartwick College(only from 1994 – 1996) and still remember Sal’s pizza!!! It is the gold standard that I measure all pizza against, and have yet to find a decent joint in Boston. I miss that pizza sauce dearly. I would imagine the recipe hasn’t changed if it’s family owned… *sigh* … if only I didn’t live 10hrs away…

With many of these positive reviews, I felt the need to go try Sal’s out even though it doesn’t look very appetizing when you peer through the windows. As one of the other reviewers said, the pizza might be good, but don’t expect a comfortable environment for a dine-in experience. When I walked it, there were a bunch of guys dressed in PJs, sweats and football jerseys. Likely, they just came in after a game. I got a slice of the eggplant parmesan which was packed with veggies(broccoli, green and red peppers and onions) with fried eggplant on top. The pizza was hearty, and one slice was more than enough. The price is comparable to Tino’s and Mama Nina’s, but out of all three places, I think I liked this one the best(maybe I just liked all the veggies). I didn’t give it 5 stars because it’s still not quite there, but for convenient reheated pizza, this is pretty yummy.

Don’t go looking for atmosphere, but their pizza is really really good. Their pies are a little on the greasy side, so grab a stack of napkins before you leave. You won’t be disappointed.

Sal’s Pizzeria is the best, hole-in-the-wall, family owned, *REAL* NY style pizza ever. I miss it so much, and it brings back fantastic memories from my childhood. I grew up in Oneonta, and left when I was 15. I went back in 2006 and saw that the little girl that used to run around the restaurant was all grown up, and it was so great. Fantastic service, fantastic pizza, fantastic people… and the place where my heart will always be! My mom, sister, and I will always have a place for Sal’s in our hearts.

If my friend and I are drunk, Sal’s gets more than five stars, but really I give it a four. Open late, with fast service despite how long the line usually is. Go here or order delivery after a long night of partying and you won’t be dissapointed, and you’ll probably see twenty other people you know. Try cheese pizza with cold cheese on top — awesome!

The best pizza in the town of Oneonta, as far as I’m aware. And by far, the friendliest service.
