Talk about a diamond in the semi-rough! If only there were more spice shops like this one… Located right on main st. and sharing exactly ½ the large room with a yarn shop, the Oneonta Spice Co. has just about everything you need to create treats from all over the globe. In most cities, you’d need to go to several different shops, as well as order online for many of the amazing ingredients they have here. Dried fuits, chiles, cans of harissa, thai spices, tahini, mini-umbrellas, specialty sausages, large selection of Roland canned exotic foods, giant commercial sized cans of stuff, thai tamarind paste. Huge wall of hot sauces, fresh lemons, tomatoes, limes… Last but not least, my favorite — the lovely wall of amazing spices. Doesn’t look like much, but they’ve bagged into teeny and med sized bags just about every spice on the planet, and i do mean every spice. you can load up on stuff, without spending an arm and leg, and get that little bit of mace, or dried lemongrass, or some interesting extract. it’s not exactly gourmet, but totally eclectic, expansive and reasonably priced. Some things like soy sauce, for instance, cost more, but the spices run from $ 1 — $ 4. Bill at the register, is also a very nice gentleman — and this store opens before most other stores in the neighborhood — 8 am!
