A California wine snob, I was very curious(and skeptical) about Kansas wines — Stone Pillar completely challenged my notions. First, the setting is absolutely lovely, the grounds are beautiful and the big red tasting barn felt both appropriate and chic. The tasting room itself is very clean and homey. The staff was awesome, Amelia was a delight — very patient with our questions and excited to share in our growing enthusiasm for the present wines and the surrounding wine country. The wines themselves were fun — and the pours were generous. I did prefer the sweet to the dry — the Redneck Rose is truly tasty, and the blackberry fruit wine(new to me) is delicious! Also new? Wine Slushies! Quite a surprise — but something I could see myself diving into on a hot day. I agree with some of the other reviews in that the pricing is a little weird(particular flight for a flat rate, or hoping around the menu for $ 1 – $ 3 per pour depending,) but I tasted everything I wanted to for $ 8 — so no room for complaint. All and all, a great place and great intro to the Kansas/Missouri Wine scene!

Lovely grounds, convenient location. They have lots of events, music and dinners and it is somewhat kid-friendly. The wine is not great and quite over priced. They recently changed their tasting menu from a 4 flight of 2 oz pours to individual 1 oz pours. I was not a fan of the flight idea as it was very pricey to try the list. Now there are 1 oz pours ranging from $ 1-$ 3 which is quite ridiculous for the quality of wine. Why not have a flat tasting fee that is waived with purchase!?! The wine slushy is good but also pretty pricey at $ 9. Service depends on who is working and ranges from very sweet and welcoming to standoffish and elitist. There are wineries in Louisburg who do not charge for a tasting and allow you to try the entire list, they are worth the drive. Tip: most of their wines can be purchased at local liquor stores for $ 3-$ 6 less than onsite.

It’s a nice place but the wine is just not good and WAAAY overpriced. $ 25 gets you a very nice bottle of wine at the liquor store, this swill is not even comparable. I love to support local businesses but this is money down the drain.

Attended over the weekend. I wouldn’t say it was a awesome experience. It was just ok. Driving up to the place was beautiful and looked well kept. Once entering, you were pretty much on your own. There was hardly any explanation of the wines at all and you had to stand in line for any help. The staff was not friendly at all and they seemed to be bothered that they needed to work. The most excited person to seenus was the dog. So cute and friendly. The wine pours were very inconsistent. They need to work on that. It’s suppose to be an ounce but half the time you got a half if that. The best thing that day was the cherry and peach slushie. Now that was good. Overall it was a beautiful place but service needs serious help. Will not return. I’m sad. :(

Don’t recommend, sorry. I was not treated very nice by a woman who is affiliated with the winery.

Not a fan of the place or wine. I didn’t have a good experience here at all. First, I got tickets to a tasting with appetizers. The appetizers were pretty awful, and I know they are supposed to be small dishes, but when they are going to be the size of your pinky, they should be good. They had a bruschetta and the bread was completely wet and soggy. The best part was the wine slushies they had at the end. I went with a group and after we waited in line for the appetizers, we just sat down and ate them. There wasn’t music or anything so it was a bit awkward. We went inside and tasted the wine, and they just weren’t what I liked at all. It was a bummer because this one is closest to me.

I was recently here for a bridal shower in the outside pavilion. The store and surrounding land with vines growing was beautiful. Everything was very well cared for and you could see that in the grounds and store. I honestly never knew about this vineyard that happens to be so close to me. I’m surprised I haven’t seen more advertising but maybe they sell based on word of mouth. I definitely recommend coming and doing a wine tasting. They allowed us to taste 4 wines for free, which honestly is not common. These days it seems like you have to pay for everything. The manager was very informative and nice as our party sampled the wines and asked questions. They offer vino slushies for $ 9 and you can buy bottles of wine or by the glass for $ 8. The bottles were rather expensive at around $ 25 on average but the good news is that I think it’s worth it. My favorite was the Prairie Fire which was a dry red with smoky and spicy notes. It was an amazing wine. They offer many others for those who prefer white wine or sweeter reds. Overall I had a great time listening to the live music and drinking wine. I wish they wouldn’t have let the large resident dog roam the property while we were eating, because that was a little gross when he put his slobbery jowls on my plate, but other than that I loved it here.

Who knew there was such good wine produced right here in Johnson County! In my experience(and I’ve been to a lot of local wineries) most local wines are way too sweet for my taste; the wines offered here are much more sophisticated. The winery itself is a fun and inviting place to visit — they have the best outdoor area for their summer concerts! The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable about the wines and are happy to make suggestions. They offer tours but I think you need to make an appointment. The tastings are free and you get as many as 8. They are not overly generous pours, but it’s hard to complain when they’re free. They make a wide variety of reds and whites, sweet and dry. Prices are comparable to those at other local wineries and if you sign up for their newsletter you’ll know which wine is «wine of the month» and at least $ 5 off the regular price. I had so much fun the last time I was there! I could’ve done without the screaming kids that were running in and out of the tasting room — you wouldn’t bring your kids to a bar, why would you think it was acceptable to bring them to a winery? Anyway, poor parenting aside, Stone Pillar is a great place to hang out, enjoy some wine and take in the gorgeous scenery.

Don’t waste your time unless you live right next door. We drove 45 mins. Wine…slightly below average with above average prices. Service… weak. We did not feel welcome; we actually felt like we were intruding on a «locals» winery. Weird. Other than the kid taking money to enter($ 5), all of the staff were inside. Would have been nice if someone was in charge, and I don’t know, directing efforts. Entertainment venue… needs WAY more seating and tables… lots of couples sitting at tables meant for six… thanks! Music was acceptable(for $ 5). The«caterer» was ridiculously rude(not worth explaining). In this economy, I am baffled by unprofessional service. Food was ok, not great($ 10). Anyway, we won’t be going back. Of all the things we’ve done since moving to KC, this has been the most disappointing…

There are a lot I brands of wine I don’t like; this winery had everything down. Sampled quite a few, and it was hard to decide. Very friendly staff. I highly recommend their wine and their store had some cool stuff too. Prices are better at Brown Bag for their wine, but the liquor store doesn’t do sampling.

Celebrating New Year’s with a bottle of Joceaux wine. A local bottle of wine makes for an extra special celebration. I did some holiday shopping here and the gift of Joceaux wine was greatly appreciated. It’s nice to give a gift from a local company. I plan to shop at Stone Pillar next year, too.

I had been driving past this place for ages always saying I should stop. Well, I finally found an excuse. You see, my girlfriend was being a champ by offering to pick my drunk ass up from a bachelor party in the wee hours of the morning, so I told her I would make her a nice dinner in exchange. Of course, no nice dinner on my table is complete without wine. At first I was just going to stop by the store for a standard bottle, but I decided to peel off K-10 a bit early and stop here. It was about 4pm on a weekday, so it was quiet. I like reds, but can also do whites. My girlfriend likes whites, but can also do red. Seeing as I am the bigger wine fan of the two, I figured I would try to accommodate her more, so I was on the lookout for a white. Deciding to taste a few first, I was poured by a very nice gent and given a little«cheat sheet» of the wines. The first white I had was a little dry for my girlfriend’s tastes, I think, so I decided to move on. The second one was definitely sweeter, but had a nice, crisp taste, so I thought I would get that one. The gent in question poured me one more, a blush. Now, I don’t normally like blush wines, but I enjoyed this one, and decided to go with it. Quickly rang up, I headed out with my bottle in hand for $ 18…maybe a bit high, and definitely higher than I would have paid at the store, but I am glad to support something local instead of a mysterious California or Washington or Australian vineyard. As Amanda mentions, this isn’t Napa, this isn’t Sonoma, this isn’t even Temecula. This is suburban Kansas City. Considering that, this is a pretty cool and tasty place.

I live a stones throw from this winery and stopped in a few times over last summer to taste a few varieties. I had a red, blush and the vignole. The red was good and I am not partial to red wine. The blush I enjoyed but by far my favorite was the vignole. At just under $ 19 a bottle I was a fan. The taste wasn’t too sweet and it didn’t linger but rather pleasantly disappeared leaving no strong after taste. Best of all, no headache followed. :) The family owned vineyard is quaint and screams history. The sons who now look after it and help their parents run it have always been nice and super helpful when asked questions about different wines. At Halloween, Christmas and various other holidays they have fun things to do with the family ranging from a pumpkin patch, Halloween bash, easter egg hunt, live music in the summer and so much more. Don’t hesitate to check it out and show this local vineyard some love. You can find their wines in various local liquor stores or request it if yours doesn’t currently carry it.

We walk in and there is no one there but the owners and employees, which is no big deal even though it was pretty awkward. We start tasting some wine and while doing so I like to ask questions about wine. The woman pouring our wine, who is spilling it all over the place may I add, does not know any answers to my questions. She then points to a younger man working there and I repeat the question, «What makes this a German-style wine?» and he responds quite sarcastically«a German winemaker…» Wow, that was not quite what I was looking for. I figured he would actually answer my question, but he just ignored me and continued to stock the shelves. If you’re going to start a business selling and making wine, you should probably promote it and be kind to your customers. They were just so rude and it really pissed me off. At that point I was definitely not going to buy any of their wine, but this was the first time I honestly did not like a single type of wine from a winery so refusing to buy from them was not difficult. The prices were much higher compared to the other wineries in the area as well. I don’t know if the staff was having an off day or what when it comes to their customer service, but I do not recommend a visit here, or purchasing their wine.

No, this isn’t Napa or Sonoma but gosh darn I was pretty impressed with my first tasting of a local winery. I thought it would be farther out in the country but it’s on the corner of College Blvd and Woodland Road, right off of K-10. It is set far enough from the road to pretend you’re out in the country though. Plus the parking is close to the vines if you’re in the mood to take pictures. The tasting is free but the pours are not as generous as I have had in Napa/Sonoma. There are plenty of whites and reds to taste, sweet and dry. The wines are reasonably priced as well. There are the prerequisite wine items for sale too — glasses, bottle openers, etc. Also, there are picnic tables outside and they were selling food too. I am already looking forward to going again to try and buy next years vintage.
