Big John Steak & Onion

Making my way through Lansing during a snow storm and spotted the billboard. I couldn’t be happier with my choice.
No frills steak and cheese sandwich done to perfection! Fresh cut fries would have made it 5 Star.

If you like steak sandwiches, try these. If you are worried about calories, go to veggies and watercress
Com. These are the best steak subs PERIOD… The flavor is fantastic. They don’t charge extra if you ask for extra peppers or extra sauce. Try that at MD. Best ever. THANK YOU JOHN.

I’m a big cheesesteak fan, and this place is pretty darn good. I would put it on the same level as a Tubby’s for those who are from the Detroit area.
I had a steak and onion with cheese and mushrooms. They were having some sort of issue with the grill I believe, so the service was really slow, but I didn’t factor that into my rating. The staff was very apologetic.
The sandwich itself was delicious. Good bread, good steak, and the cheese was decent. The only thing keeping this place from getting a 5-​star review is it’s lack of sides. Most places similar to Big John will have fries as a side option. This place only offers chips, which was a disappointment.
This place has a lot of potential and I’d love to see them expand to the Detroit area. If they clean up their image a bit and expand the menu slightly, I think they’d be able to draw more people.
Regardless, this is a great place to stop for a quick bite. If you’re on your way home from East Lansing after an MSU game, this is an great option if you don’t want to wait in the crowds at a table service establishment.

As always, looking for something new and local. Just happened to bring me into Okemos on the way from Grand Rapids to Columbus.
Located in a small strip mall on Okemos Rd is Big John Steak & Onion. Let me just say, the smell from the moment you step out of your car is enough to send you taste buds into the store!
The store is laid out as a fast casual joint. The menu is very small but everything on it is great!
After trying a few items I personally suggest the #2 Combo!
The food is fantastic and the flavors set itself apart from your typical steak sub place. Add on top their Custom Red Sauce and you have yourself a hit! It has just enough kick to know it is there, but sweet enough to resemble a mariana/​taco sauce.
Single person bathrooms is a downside, and the cleanliness of the restaurant was not the greatest with not much to look at. Drink selection was all tap soda’s and tea. Blah I hate tap tea… but I digress.
Big John Steak & Onion will see me back in the future!

WAIT TIME — Unless you go to a newly opened location don’t expect to be waiting too long as they are a chain and they have the process down.
SERVICE — No service here, just place your order and wait for your name/​order to be called.
FOOD — Normally I am a bad reference when it comes to price as I eat more than what society deems as «normal.» I ordered the 16″ Steak Mushroom and Onion sub and it came out to be about $ 14. On a purely «price to inches» scale you can definitely find a better deal else where. i.e. $ 5 footlong! There is a «red sauce» that you can add on your own which I and many others on Unilocal have recommended. If I were to guess the Arby’s Barbecue sauce is it’s close relative. This is greasy and messy but if that is what you are looking for, it is worth a visit. This is a once every few month visit for me when I crave a greasy filling sub.

Great service. Food was amazing. I ordered a #4 steak mushroom and cheese. It was perfect.

First thing I thought when finished… I should have gone with the 16″ sandwich combo. The 8″ meal was enough to fill me up but not leave me in a food coma, however I should have taken the other half home.
The steak, cheese and mushroom sandwich was unbelievably delicious, cooked to order, and a perfect temperature and taste combination with the banana peppers. The meal came with a side of chips and a drink all under $ 10, now that’s student friendly pricing.
I will definitely be back to try the chicken sandwich, but now I know to go large and bring a cooler to transport the rest with me on the road home.
This place is conveniently located a couple blocks off the highway for anyone that wants a quick bite during a long drive. More to follow when I come back for the Philly chicken in a couple days.

I tried Big Johns for the first time, and they had some good steak subs! That’s really it they just had good food! It is kinda neat that you can watch the grill, but other that that is something a bit different and you can’t go wrong with steak and onion.

Big John’s is a little piece of heaven in the middle of Michigan. The Okemos location is, I think, one of their best as it’s easy access off the highway and the team here is consistently excellent. .fast, friendly, and damn good at what they do. The steak sandwiches are ridiculously tasty… shaved rib-​eye on an Italian roll with sweet onion and all the other good stuff… shrooms, peppers, cheese, etc… to make your sammie just the way you like it. The «red sauce» propels it into the heavenly category… kind of a cross between taco sauce and marinara… highlighting the flavor of the meat. I live in Chicago but try to hit Big John’s every time I’m within an hour of one of their locations. Try it and you’ll probably get hooked too!

Big John Steak & Onion is a regional chain in mid-​Michigan. A kind of sub-​sandwich joint similar to a philly & cheese, but significantly less greasy.
I ordered their traditional Steak & Onion as a meal (chips & a drink). The sandwich didn’t really look like much but it smelled great and tasted fantastic.
The meat was lightly seasoned to complement the onion and cheese.
I recommend a visit if you’ve never been. I’m sure I’ll find my way here for an easy meal on occasion.

Just perfect everything. Service, food sauce. Went here all the time with my best bud. I highly recommend it.

If you don’t like this meal you must be a nutritionist. The shaved steak was tender and tasty! Bread was fresh, and the fries were also good
To top it off it was cheap and they take credit cards!

Awesome subs, both steak and chicken. The subs are perfectly seasoned and satisfies me everytime I go to Big John’s. I will bypass several Tubby’s submarines, just to go to Big John’s. Sorry Tubby’s. You’re going to have to step up your game…

Dirt cheap and delicious sandwiches.
You can grab two 8″ sandwiches for $ 5 — a value you can’t touch at other sub shops in town. The namesake Steak and Onion was good, but the sausage and pepper sub was what kept me coming back. I’m not in Lansing anymore, but next time I’m in town visiting Sparty I’ll stop by Big John for sure.
