I learned about Watkins after visiting the Ventura Farmers Market in January where they are a vendor. The quality of their pastured meat is unsurpassed and they offer a good selection. Being pastured, it obviously costs a bit more, but you can literally taste the difference in both freshness and quality. I served some baked chicken to my guests last week and they literally paused, turned their head, and said in an astonished voice that it was the best chicken they had ever tasted. I’m a decent cook, but I know the reason they enjoyed it so much is the quality and freshness. I regularly buy the ground beef and pork, chicken thighs, drumsticks, and stew meat just to have it on hand. The roasts and steaks are the best too. Simply put, I am a very happy customer and I will never buy meat from a grocery store again. I will buy it from Watkins every chance I get. Delicious!

If you eat meat you might as well eat the finest available, and this is where you’ll find it. The quality is unsurpassed. The prices may be high compared to supermarkets, but you get what you pay for. We have reduced our red meat consumption in favor of having the highest quality when we do eat it. Beef, chicken, and pork sold here are delicious!
These butchers are also great, friendly, knowledgeable, helpful. Local businesses like this need to be supported!!!

Every time I’ve come in the shop, they’ve been friendly and helpful. If they didn’t have a particular cut in the case (porterhouse steaks), they prepared it for me if they could. The quality of their chicken and meat is excellent and worth the little extra cost.
This is a great shop run by a fantastic family and we’re fortunate to have them as part of our Ojai community.

Cheers for Butcher Michael! Though I was only in to ask a zillion questions for future cooking reference, Michael took the time and answered patiently. Impressive that he knew all the answers in regards to the origins of their meat! Happy to hear they do their own smoking and will break down game for you. I am so excited to buy animal parts to cook from there!

Ojai is very fortunate to have the Watkins Ranch butcher shop in town. Free yourself from science-​fiction factory meats, and on the rare occasions you should be eating red meat this is the place to get it. Pasture raised happy cattle, lamb, chicken, pork in every cut you could want. All the employees and Watkins family members have been exceedingly helpful and kind, at every opportunity. The meet is a little pricey but that’s understandable. You get cheap meet by confining animals to a miserable torture like existence and pumping them full of hormones and GMO feed; Watkins pasture raise meat products are raised with care fed wholesome foods and allowed to roam free which is, in California, believe it or not, expensive.
