Place looks run down from the outside which is why I never tried it but my husband wanted to today. The inside was even worse. Just seemed run down, décor was a mess. Food was less than mediocre. Service was good and they gave us complimentary edamame. Just not as fresh as what I’m used to but it’s Tuesday if that means anything. Not returning any time soon.

Spent the day at the beach and had a bit of a sushi craving. Came here without high expectations. I have to say, I was surprised. It really was pretty good. The black rice sushi was filling and had a nice flavor. The presentation and ambiance were nice. A bit expensive for my taste, but filled my craving.

Enjoyed the Sushi Boat* with two friends, along with a few other rolls [notable: Spicy Girl Roll] and of course, a few drinks. It met my 3F’s criteria for sushi and sashimi: It was Flavorful, Fresh and Fulfilling. The staff was friendly, waiter gave some pretty good small talk. My only concern with the place is its confusing décor. They did an alright attempt to create the Asian vibe on the first floor but the upstairs, while intimate, still had residual neo classical touches which kept me preoccupied during dinner as to what Umi’s predecessor was. Hopefully, this will change as I’m hearing they are currently under renovation. I will be sure to visit when/if it reopens. photo*

Seafood salad is awesome — a bit pricy but it was worth it

Thank the UNIVERSE that we have great sushi nearby. This is our go to place. It’s not cheap, but really worth it. They even have gluten free soy sauce! I can recommend the following rolls: New Mango, Soho, Boston, Spicy Tuna, Yellow Tail & Scallion. They’ve got a lot of great special rolls, but many have tempura or eel with sauce which I can’t have. Very friendly staff and free edamame!

BLACKRICESUSHI. I’ve never had it anywhere else. You need to try it. It’s delicious. After raving on and on about the black rice, the owner took the time to explain to my entire family how exactly it’s made. It’s quite a process and deserves major props. Major props. The sushi boats are huge and definitely recommended for larger parties. The décor of this place is very calm and the upstairs is great for an intimate party or get together. They even serve tempura cheesecake. Oh my. Major props.

Sushi is above average, and pretty good considering the dearth of good sushi places in Long Island. Service is very good as well, especially the manager(Tony?), who is quick to correct any mistakes made by the servers. I usually end up getting a sushi boat with a few other people, and the variety of fish and rolls they offer is pretty good. I’ve tried a few of their cooked items too, but those have room for improvement. Overall, a very good sushi spot that’s reasonably priced and provides a nice environment for a sit down dinner. Recommended.

Umi was pretty good. The presentation of the sushi was beautiful(it came on a boat!-impressive) but somehow it didn’t seem as fresh as some of the sushi bars/restaurants that we love. The service was good but we like to see the sushi being prepared and this tasted a little pre-prepared. They had some delicious dessert choices, tho. Found Umi to be a little more pricey than some others, too. Not sure we will return that quickly

Try any bento box combination and you’ll be satisfied. Perfect if you have sushi craving right before seeing a movie nearby. They also have ramune soda, which comes in a glass bottle that has a plastic ball blocking the drink. You have to press down on it to drink the delicious fruit flavored soda. yes, totally worth it.

So a couple of friends and I were looking to explore a new Sushi spot in when I came across a Unilocaler writing a pretty good about this place Umi. All you have to say is Black Rice Sushi and I’m there! This was my first time trying not only the restaurant but the black rice also. OMG I’m obsessed! We ordered quite a few rolls, kani salad, and drinks. There wasn’t one thing that we didn’t like. And the black rice tastes exactly the same as white and better than brown. Also, I ordered a Lychee Champagne which was outstanding! And not to mention the service was awesome.

These guys specialize in brown and black rice sushi. It’s not for everyone as it’s a meatier rice that has an earthy flavor and just isn’t as airy as white. Greet selection though, the menu reaches to curry and grilled items as well. Cute décor, comfortable, casual and not over priced. If you are on long island and your bored with your normal sushi spot, this would be a good choice.

Yum Yum and Yum! This place has wonderful sushi, delish appetizers and delectable desserts. Come here for fresh rolls and innovative sushi rolls. They have a variety for everyone, even non sushi lovers. The managers are amazing and the décor is great. They have karaōke and a top floor that can be rented out for parties with a balcony, very cool!

Having just moved to Oceanside, we are slowly exploring the area and one of our explorations involves eating out. Umi was the first place we tried on the second day of our living in the new place and what a find it was! Housed in a beautiful two-story building which resembles palace in some tropical location, with an outdoor seating, Umi serves a mix of Japanese, Korean and Thai food. We had ordered some rolls, miso soup and beef teryaki. The meat was very soft and moist, the sushi rolls were larger than typical(8 pieces versus 6 on a regular rolls like California), the service was very pleasant. We will definitely be back if we have any money left from paying mortgage.

Never have I been to a sushi place where, the food, the service, the décor and the price were all a homerun. I recently visited them and first impression before even entering, is wow this place is large, has a very well organized parking lot and I believe valet, upon entering the music and sounds were brilliant, the colors and décor were wonderful, we walked upstairs, a very nice staircase might i add, and we found ourselves surrounded by a plethora of tables, with these sheets or divider like screens, it was very very cool, i was stunned, just as i thought things couldn’t get better, it did. We started off with a rock shrimp appetizer, it was absolutely delicious. My meal was the green peace rolls, simply delicious, cucumbers, eel, black rice!, covered in kiwi, absolutely stunning. I also ordered the house salad, with a dash of ginger dressing, delicious. The place was an absolute pleasant surprise, and i recommend it to anyone who loves sushi and looking for a great price. Definitely a great place to go with a date or a friend or even a group of people.

We were very disappointed. The tablecloth was dirty, the miso soup was cold and the chicken in the chicken teriyaki looked and tasted like«processed» chicken if such a thing exists. My wife had tuna/salmon sashimi and it was mediocre at best. The Philadelphia roll was excellent as an appetizer. I don’t like writing negative reviews but the only reason we tried this restaurant was because of the couple of positive reviews on this site… we will not be returning… the indigestion we both have could not tolerate another go around.

What a fantastic sushi spot. For appetizer we ordered the calamari which is cooked japense style like a tempura, and also the tuna volcano which comes with tuna, tomatoes and different types of vegetables. Both were incredible. The waiters were so nice they gave my mom and I a free glass glass of wine and free miso soup. For our entrée we ordered 3 different rolls and made sure they made them with«black sushi» which is the first place in NY that actually has this, it helps lower cholestrol, blood plessure, and a bunch of other great things for your health. It tasted fabulous. We ordered the volcano roll, the beef roll and the naurto roll. The presentation was beautiful and the sushi incredible! The prices also weren’t bad considering the food was so fantastic I would say it’s moderate, defnitely not cheap but not insanely expensive either. Now for the atmosphere, the walls are painted a lime green and blue color, they have a fake tree and it branches out with fake leaves, it’s so pretty. They also have bamboo plants all over the restaurant. Each table is seperated by dividers that are hanging from the wall which makes for a very pleasant and private dining experience.

Great sushi spot. This is the first place on Long Island to offer Black Sushi… which you can only find in Manhattan! They have full bar, extensive menu that includes non-seafood options and great appetizers. Its a bit expensive but well worth it.

Just pure deliciousness. The staff is very nice, the décor is this vampy, cliché japanese eatery. BUT it is brightly colored and vibrant so it becomes very tongue and cheek. Order the Spicy Girl roll, you will be hooked. I wish I could eat here everyday. Priced very reasonably too.

OH! MY! GOD! My honey took me here after he found it randomly, and I almost passed out. The restaurant is GORGEOUS, the service was impeccable, and the sushi was astounding. And get this, the prices won’t make your wallet scream in agony! The bartender couldn’t made my red devil, but they did make me the most yummy piña colada, and even gave me the extra. This is a nice place to take a date, or just hang out with your friends. Everywhere is carpeted upstairs, there’s a humungo sized tv near the bar(for all of you sportsters) and it has such a homey feel.
