So, in driving up Douglas from Mission to the 76, we saw a sign that said«Kona Grill»(I missed the sushi part). We went there tonight expecting Hawaiian Barbecue, but found it was a grill and sushi place, which was ok too. We ordered quite a bit of food to go, for 4 of us to share. We got a good selection of the menu, and overall I’m really pretty disappointed. We ordered to go, and it literally took 50 minutes of us standing in the restaurant to get our food — and when we got there there was exactly one party dining in the restaurant. By the time we left it was filling up, but there was really not a good reason for it to take that long. Adding to the problem, the kitchen apparently did the hot food first, and then started doing the sushi, resulting in all the«hot» food(except the soup) being stone cold by the time we got to eat it. Possibly some of this would be alleviated if you ate in, but it wasn’t a good start. Ok so, the food: Salad — generic iceberg mix with some carrot shreds. Weak ginger-soy type dressing(tasted very watery). Miso soup — probably the best part of the meal, nice broth, a bit of tofu and wakame. Cream cheese wontons(I can’t resist these) — small, bite size treats. They were fried nicely and not greasy. But stone cold fried food is just«eh» at best. Sauce with it was poor, I used some tempura dipping sauce instead. Hawaiian grilled steak — actually ok in flavor, weakened tremendously by being cold when it should have been hot. It was not a grilled steak like I expected, but rather grilled small slices of steak, in a thickish marinade. Terriyaki chicken — I didn’t try it, the person who did said it was fine, but again, cold. Mixed tempura — again, good fry on it, but COLD! Had it been hot, I’m sure it would have been good. Spicy tuna handroll — light on the tuna, heavy on the spicy All the handrolls really suffered from the same problem — they were wrapped in really inferior nori. It was thick and very chewy — to the point that you pretty much had to tear it with your teeth because you couldn’t bite through it. Unpleasant enough that I ended up unwrapping mine to eat the filling and discarding the wrapper. I think the bad nori was the capper for me. Anyhow, I’m going to give them the benefit of the doubt that it’d be better if you ate in, but I won’t be back to find out. As(sort of) a saving grace, the guy at the counter/waiter was a very nice guy.
