Small little store in Ocean Grove that had some nice apple cider for a crisp fall day. The line stretched outside but the staff was friendly(albeit a little overwhelmed). This tiny spot has limited seating, but luckily there is outdoor seating if the weather is right. Enjoy!

I came here almost every day during the summer I’m in OG. The owners and staff are some of the most kind-hearted people I’ve ever met. Coffee was great, their pastries were wonderful.

This was always my go to place for coffee when visiting the Shore. Always looked forward to coffee and an apricot poppy scone at the Bean. Went there this past weekend and noticed the Carpe Beanum sign was gone! At first I thought it was a remodel, but then I realized it was under new ownership. We were the only ones in there I(the place was always packed before) and the service took forever. When I went to pay, the gentleman behind the counter had to use the calculator on his phone to figure out how much change to give me! I gave it two stars because the coffee is still good. The barista was very rude to my husband – all because he asked for skim milk! At this rate, I don’t think they are going to make it. :(

I’ve come to Ocean Grove for vacation for several years now. Every year the Barbaric Bean has been my go-to coffee shop. However, this year I was disappointed by their service and their coffee. The espresso was not as tasty as other nearby coffee joints(venture into Asbury Park). The bagels are delicious(they come from Bagels International in Bradley Beach), but they take forever to be prepared and served. Same with drinks. Compared to other places, the service is slow. I’ve heard rumors that there is a new owner, so maybe they are just taking time to adjust!

I really want to like this place. I love the décor inside, and the coffee is tasty. The breakfast is standard decent café fare, but the speed of service is terrible. It’s absurd. I wonder if all the people behind the counter are on island time. It shouldn’t take 25 minutes to get an untoasted bagel with cream cheese… This wasn’t an isolated event, either. Six of us had similarly slow experiences on two different days. Their breakfast sandwiches are pretty good as long as you don’t get a bagel with cream cheese. I’ve been consistently unimpressed with those. If you only stick with the coffee, then the place is okay.

Excellent espresso and the service was great. They couldn’t have been nicer or more helpful.

The staff is really outgoing and friendly. I like that they keep their customer punch cards in a little rolodex behind the counter. I know when given the responsibility to tuck mine away in my wallet I often forget it exists and miss out on my tenth hole punch complimentary item.

Excellent coffee, great food and incredibly friendly service describe this place. Great neighborhood place to relax and watch the world go by. Baked goods are always fresh and delicious. A must see when in Ocean Grove!

OPENSAT6:30AM If you enjoy excellent coffee served by friendly folks in a relaxed, no rush atmosphere, this is your place. If you’re rushed to get back on the road, Macdonalds is up the highway… but there, the coffee stinks. If its the summer and you’re on vacation, what’s the rush? You’re on vacation! Why complain when the coffee is worth the wait. And for that matter, it’s worth its weight. So yea the food is great and I love their breakfast sandwiches, but here’s my problem… their service is extremely slow and unorganized. Also there is no consistency and my sandwich is different every time, which is such a shame bc every time I go in there it’s now making me not want to go back. Maybe some employee training is needed.

The Barbaric Bean stands as the quintessential, homegrown gathering place in heart of downtown Ocean Grove. Joe and Margie provide the heart and hearth of the community. Did I say the coffee and baked goods are also roasted, brewed and baked with the skilled and loving care of Joe and Margie? Rest assured that a visit to The Bean won’t be a one-time experience, Always a pleasure!

Cute little place with decent coffee. Super friendly staff and the food looked great although we didn’t eat. Definitely come back. I miss the coffee houses around this area.

This one is going to be short and sweet. Everyone who works there is very nice. However, they have about 10 people behind the counter. It is a tiny little café that can only seat 10 or so people inside. Despite the army of folks behind the counter, they are extremely slow when it comes to getting orders out. My wife and I have sat outside waiting for about 30 minutes or more for breakfast burritos. Beyond the slow service, the food is ok. Nothing really to write home about. Go there if you are in a pinch and the other places on Main Street are booked. Make sure you give yourself ample time to account for the service.

Great coffee(according to my caffeine lovers). It’s cute, homey, and run by the nicest couple. Great baked good, and I plan on returning for a sandwich. Perfect for breakfast before the beach. BONUS: Free wifi! And half priced baked goodies daily.

My entire experience is through the mail. This company sent free coffee to each squadron in my airwing(while stationed in Japan). The coffee was amazing and I was so moved that I wrote a note through the companies website and placed another order for myself. The second round of coffee was just as amazing and the included another bag of coffee as a way of saying thanks I passed the bag along to some others. I will keep ordering coffee from them for a long, long time.

One of my biggest pet peeves is bad coffee. Bad coffee is never excusable at a coffee shop, and this place currently holds the title for worst cup of coffee I’ve ever had within walking distance of my apartment. I ordered my cup of plain black coffee and must have waited upwards of 10 minutes for it, even though I and one other person were the only customers in the place at the time. I decided to give them the benefit of the doubt and hope that the reason for the wait was because they were brewing a new pot. When I finally got my coffee I took one sip and realized it was horribly burnt. They either left it brewing for way too long or used a temp that was way too high for the beans they were using. On my walk home I did my best to choke the stuff down for the caffeine fix but I ended up throwing it away. I *never* throw coffee away. Can’t speak for the food, but the coffee alone was a 1 star experience.

I happened to stop in the café when they were offering a brie, turkey and strawberry panini. Needless to say, it was delicious. I loved the atmosphere both inside and out. The inside was very cozy, and the seating outside offered a great area to enjoy the weather. My only complaint was how slow the service was. It seems the need a specialized barista in addition to the cashier. Understandably so, I don’t think he could keep up with both, not to mention the constant stream of costumers.

We were desperately looking for a place to eat on a hot summer Saturday night in Ocean Grove. Barbaric Bean is a small place and I realize that a small coffee shop is not necessarily appropriate for six hungry concert goers, but we were starving and all the other places had waiting times of over 30 minutes. I was happy the café was able to accommodate us. I remember not being that impressed with my meal, but they get an extra star for having a nice veggie sandwich on the menu — that means a lot to my husband, who is vegan.

There’s one spectacular barista named, I think, Megan who looks like Ellen Page and is pretty much the sweetest barista I’ve ever met in my life. I haven’t seen her in lately; maybe she’s gone. Every other employee that I’ve ever interacted with has been poor or flat-out rude. One young woman acts like you killed her dog every time you order a drink. Charmant. The coffee used to be FANTASTIC, but for the past six months it has been vile and tasted burned(like Starbucks, to be honest). The food is inconsistent. The chili is good, but I’ve had mediocre sandwiches. I haven’t gone back lately — since the Super Barista’s not there, why go to a place with mediocre food, inconsistent coffee and bad service?
