Love this place. I was walking by and I just suddenly had to go in. I really enjoyed my time and bought a lot of books. If you are in the area, you must go there!

Super friendly and helpful, great suggestions. In restaurants I like a menu that fits on one page, small selection of good stuff but with enough variety to fit your mood. Well this little book shop has a great menu… a pleasure to find and patronize. Hope you’ll do the same!

It has been some time since I’ve stumbled upon a truly wonderful bookstore. Well, this little gem of an outfit reminded me of the sheer joy a bookstore can bring. Lovely, well-curated collection of books you might not normally find elsewhere, along with those that you probably would. Collection of EL Konigsburg + Sheila Heti? Um, fuck yes. Also, you can get great book recs from a dude with an awesome beard. Will make it a point to return next time I’m in Oakland.

I almost wish I still lived in Oakland. Just because of this bookstore. The selection is great, very carefully curated. You won’t find shelf filler here. I could pick up almost anything and be happy as a cat. Please support this business. I want it to stay around a while.

This bookshop is easy to miss, tucked unassumingly next to a parking garage. I went in several months ago and kept meaning to come back, but I didn’t. Little by little I was lured back in… That first time in the bookshop, it was April. I was with my young colleague. We were just off work and killing time before grabbing a drink at Radio across the street. The shop had just opened. He was carrying a borrowed technical manual that belonged to his boss, which was carefully footnoted by hand. Later after our fun time in the bar and some other random about town cavorting, the book had gone missing. This was bad. Sometime later after an agonizing search of downtown Oakland’s establishments, young colleague caves and replaces the book which is expensive and not dearly footnoted. Wanders into bookshop by chance with it tucked under his arm. The clerk recognizes the book and mentions that some poor sod had left the same book a while back. He produces it after young colleague identifies himself as the leaver. Happiness ensues. Fast forward 9 months. I’m looking online for graphic novels to inspire my not-so-good 7 year old reader to enjoy reading(the shit she gets from school is excruciating for all parties). One jumps out at me, and I almost buy it from Amazon. Then I remember.. I need to see if it’s in that bookshop downstairs. I mean.. they did save my buddy’s hide after all… And it was there! So instead of buying from the juggernaut, I got the warm fuzziness of shopping local. Guess what I bought next? Harry Potter for my same 7 year old at her own request. This reading stuff is not so bad! Did i mention that I like the clerk too. He is extremely personable in that librarian way. This is not an insult – librarians fucking rock. They are disciples of the magic of reading! There’s something about him that I like, intellectually. I have a hunch that if he says something is good… it will be. That’s how I also became the owner of a short essay collection on gender and power, which was pretty killer.

Treasure in downtown Oakland for bibliophiles. Nice selection of press books, zines and feminist books along with fun art books. Also a lot of cute and creative children books. Good place to find a rare book for gift. Friendly staff as well.

Hmm. Interesting little book store; had a few attractions along with the books they sell. Really hipster and… Pseudoscientific new age… They had a few paperback classics with different cover designs, some used books, along with new age books and slightly satanic influence. Not too much selection, but it was an experience. Cards and cups were interesting; floor creaks a LOT. I’m sorry but this place just wasn’t really my cup of tea. Interior design of the place kinda creeps you out.

I hate using the word«curated» because it sounds really pretentious to me, but I would use that word to describe this small, independent bookstore. It offers a great mix of new and used books in many genres. I even saw very, very old books(like circa early 1900s) on the shelves. I exchanged some funny banter with the owner, who offered to order a book for me that I needed but wasn’t stocked there. I loved the art on the walls and little gifts to purchase(letterpress cards, notebooks, a couple of home items) and overall I just got a really warm and cool vibe from the store. I’ll definitely be popping in again.

Best bookstore ever! If your favorite friend to chat about great reads with opened a store in a cool neighborhood with variety and good taste, that’s what this place would be! It’s great! An awesome selection of current and classic books as well as mcsweeny originals. The owner is amazing and so helpful, I was bummed when others came in because I wanted to chat with him for 5 more hours and pick his brain! Go here if you want a book, to kill time, or an awesome experience!

This is a gem of a store. It’s brand new and a great addition to the neighborhood — I mean, there’s a great bar across the street, Radio or if you’re in the mood for coffee there’s one of those too, Modern Coffee. Wolfman has a carefully curated selection of books and if Justin doesn’t have what you want, he’ll get it for you. I’ve found books I didn’t know I was looking for on a variety of topics. I sincerely hope this place stays around as long as Justin wants it to. I haven’t been to any of his gatherings but I will do so in the future, I want to assist in this place’s success in any way I can as it’s a venture we need in this community. BTW-the store is done in reclaimed wood and when it first opened the smell was absolutely wonderful, it’s fading now, but the beauty of the wood remains.

Great little sliver of a bookstore and art gallery. The owner/worker’s enthusiasm for books and art is infectious. They have a great selection of new and used books and an impressive section of unique kids books and comics. They also are big supporters of local artists and writers. There is a table dedicated to local and self-published books and zines. Art gallery in the back. A very cool find during my lunch break in downtown Oakland.
