4.5 stars for on-point carnitas tacos and the side of pickled onions. Location and ambiance aren’t ideal, but what do you expect from a food truck in a parking lot of a carwash in Oakland?

Their carne asada burrito is pretty good, although the cheese is unusual. Is it cream cheese? Is it actually mayo? This thing is a gut-buster, in any case. I can’t even imagine what the super burrito is like. I love their mixed pickles, they really save the day when you’re eating a greasy carne asada burrito. The tostada de camaron is amazing, they even give you little packets of Tapatio so you can do it the RIGHT way. The liquid had such good flavor, I drank the rest of it out of the soda cup they gave me the ceviche in. Shrimp had a great texture and flavor. So nice to have a solid, classic taqueria right in my hood. Most of the«Mexican» places in this part of town are the hipster joints in Temescal and Uptown.

This place is the bomb. The carne asada burrito is big and great, and the tacos come with all the taco fixins. I also love their tamales, although I’m still not exactly sure what a tamale is. Finally, get the horchata. It’s like the first time I heard the Beatles. 2 fish tacos+horchata=$ 4. Yes, the neighborhood isn’t great, but it’s fine during the day, and the people at La Bonita are super friendly. Plus, when you tell your family back east that you live in Oakland, and they make those faces and go, «oooh, Oakland. Be careful!», you’ll no longer feel guilty because you actually live in Temescal. You live in Oakland, damnit, and you eat a mean burrito.
