Awful. 1 star for the fact that it feels a teeny bit like a soju bang. Tasteless, watery, wrong fish. Service was bizarre, hostess wouldnt let us have a four top in the corner cause we were two«in case big party come.» guess what, a bird in the hand is better than two in the bush. Oh it was way early on a weeknight, daylight still. Lame. Do yourself a favor and go up to shimizu on piedmont, its close and miles above this joke. Or jump over to that place on broadway by the liquor store & arts, its meh but far more decent than this place.

Sorry folks. But Sushi Plus is no longer operational. It has now been rebranded as Dae Poh Jip, a regular standby Korean restaurant. But may I direct you to Sushiya, on Broadway and 40th! Had to get take out, but it was pretty darn good. I will miss the late night hours though…

I’m sorry but this place RULES! Have I had better sushi– yes. Have I had better sushi at 11pm? No way. It is good sushi, the proces are good and the servers are super nice. I have been twice, 2 months apart and the server remembered us(and where we sat) the second time we can in. Pretty awesome. **Disclaimer** I am a night owl. The idea of having sushi til 12am alone makes this place amazing in my book. If the sushi sucked I would have still given it a 3, but it was actually pretty good, hence the 5. If it weren’t for the hours, I would probably say 4.

There was no customer at 1pm on a Friday… I thought… maybe Sushi Plus deserves a chance because of the reviews from previous customers… but I was not satisfied with the food at all… very disappointed… There was plenty of rolls to order from but we decided on Agedahshi Tofu, Lion King, Dynamite Roll and Highland Roll. Honestly, the wrong tofu was used for the Agedashi Tofu Appetizer… soft tofu should be used… The Lion King Roll was good but I had better… Dynamite Roll and Highland Roll is the main reason I gave it a 2 star and 1 star for great service… the way it was deep fried rolls has a different type of crunch to it… not good… I think it’s worth another try in the future… but I wouldn’t recommend ordering rolls that are deep fried from this restaurant…

After noticing this new restaurant was one of the few that remains open late Sunday night, my brother and I decided to drop by after seeing a majority 4 and 5 stars reviews on Unilocal. The rectangular interior was filled with booths and vertically planted bamboo stalks to offer a sense of privacy, and there was a clear view of the giant flat screen TV behind the sushi bar for those who needed a scoring update or two. After reading descriptions such as «amazing miso soup», «gem», and«impressed» from a list of reviewers, we ordered the Sushi Plus Platter($ 50) which came with a combination of nigiri and sashimi enough to feed 3 people. We asked for the chef to pick from the freshest that was available, and our platter arrived with one Spicy Tuna Roll, Island Roll, nine pieces of nigiri, and twenty pieces of sashimi – a total of 45 pieces of sushi and roll combination neatly stacked together. It was a fantastic deal considering each piece costs a little over a dollar, but in exchange the quality and taste severely suffered. The selection of nigiri and sashimi were overwhelmingly repetitive with a heavy emphasis on salmon, tuna, and yellowtail. The repetition got tiresome quickly while the lack of variety reflected poorly on the breadth and depth of what they had in stock. As for presentation and taste, the colors on the platter were dull without a trace of shine, so the flavors equally suffered as the entire meal was bland without the hint of ultra fresh sweetness I was expecting. It was Grade B sushi at its worst. Additionally, the spicy tuna roll tasted pretty ordinary while the humongous Island Roll was drenched in an orange mayo with too much going on and very little to look forward to. If I can set the record straight, the miso soup was nothing to write home about. I honestly don’t know what these Unilocalers were eating but this place flat out sucked. To their credit, service was friendly and attentive. Overall, I thought the price was decent but it didn’t pay dividend as the quality of the supposed value meal was limiting. Here is the breakdown on the outcome of the meal that resulted in the final rating. 1.) Quality and freshness: 1 star. There was nothing fishy or outright distasteful, but the entire meal was bland and boring. 2.) Creativity and presentation: 1 stars. The venue was clean and the platter was nicely presented. The colors on the sushi were flat while a lack of diversity and creativity among the 45 pieces of sushi was severely disappointing. 3.) Quantity and substance: 3 stars. There were lots and lots of cheap sushi, but the rating suffered in the«substance» category since the selections was repetitive and none of the items inspired any sort of flavor and imagination. 4.) Accessibility and affordability: 3 stars. It’s easy to assume the price was right but on the contrary I could pay less and get more at a typical AYCE sushi restaurant. 5.) Service and ambiance: 3 stars. Our server was effective and friendly so there was very little to complain about. I will not be coming back, regardless they open late or not.

Another delivery sushi place in the area, which is nice. They do dinner deliveries also, possibly with a $ 15 minimum purchase. Had — lion king roll — nigiri mix(which includes soup, salad & dressing on the side, 10 pieces of chef’s choice nigiri) For ease of reading: — COST: Prices were to be expected, maybe a dollar or two less than other spots. — DELIVERY: Relatively quick, perhaps about 30 – 40 min around 8pm on a Friday night. — LIONKINGROLL: Definitely had better lion king rolls elsewhere(in the area, even). The fish was fine, but for some reason the rice was *super* mushy. — NIGIRI: Had 10 pieces, which included the common items(tuna, salmon, hamachi, unagi(eel), ika(squid), tako(octopus), etc.). All, except for the unagi, were without seaweed, in case that’s an issue for anyone. Sizes of the fish cut were on the smallish side, and I’m not sure if there was any wasabi under the fish. Overall, they were ok. Nothing extraordinary. Adequate. — SALAD: small regular green salad with what looked like miso sesame dressing on the side; didn’t eat it in the end. — MISOSOUP: Nothing spectacular with bits of seaweed and tofu, but still tasty and satisfying. Had a few pieces left over and ate the next day. Surprisingly enough, most everything tasted *better* the next day. The lion king roll, despite it now being cold, wasn’t as mushy anymore as the rice firmed up a little. P. S. — Everything was delivered in styrofoam boxes. Banned for Oakland take-out in 2007 — please switch to something recyclable/compostable!

Let me be brutally honest: this place has a ridiculous amount of sushi rolls on the menu. I am talking well over a bazillion different types of rolls(grand exaggeration there, but you get the point). They have your staples like the Catepillar, deep fried rolls, et cetera but they also have ones that I’ve never seen anywhere else like the Oh! My God roll. New life goal: try every single one of the rolls on the menu. Dinner bento box with two items: I think it was $ 10.95. Came with miso soup, salad, rice, 2 gyoza, and I ordered the salmon and tuna sashimi. Everything was super delicious! Unagi don: about $ 14. Really good and generous portions of unagi. Oh! My God Roll: about $ 9 Spicy tuna with avocado, albacore, and sriracha and another sauce on this top – A MUSTHAVE! Service: always prompt to greet and seat. Very attentive, but sometimes maybe a little too intent on being attentive. Sometimes I just feel like they’re staring at me, trying to anticipate my every need. It can be a little intense. Price wise? This place is more affordable for some things, and more expensive for others. It’s an okay balance. To-go orders: They’ll serve you hot tea while you wait. They do miso soup for to-go orders! My only qualm is that their to-go ware is styrofoam. =*{ I want a more eco-friendly one please! The décor in this place is pretty cute and overall I like the ambiance. But every time I go in it’s pretty dead. This place is lonely. Fill it up, yo!

Open til midnight 7 days a week? this is great news to people that love delicious late night munchies – none of that cheap greasy american fat – like me ;) The place is fairly new. I had driven by it for months but it didn’t look appealing, considering it’s located in a pretty sketchy neighborhood. But I finally went in 2 weeks ago after reading your Unilocal reviews and have gone back 3 times! The food, service, and prices are legit. They even deliver for free during lunch($ 15 minimum) Monday — Friday. This is amazing if it’s raining or you’re sick/hung over… udon and sushi just a phone call away?! Although this isn’t authentic, I like how you can order 1 pc nigiri sushis here. Their miso soup is always amazing as well. The saba-shioyaki(grilled mackerel) blew me away… I seriously wasn’t expecting it to be as great and fresh as the saba I buy from Berkeley Bowl. Some other things I strongly recommend: spicy scallop roll, combination sunomono(w/cucumber, raddish, hotategai, shrimp, & octopus), futomaki, salmon sashimi, amaebi and gyoza so far. I’ll add more as I go back n try more stuff. I wouldn’t recommend the tempura here though. The deep-fried sweet shrimp head was kinda chewy and weird too. Hopefully they’ll work on that… another thing I’m sad about is how they don’t serve ice cream! :(I guess at least they give you some peppermint candy at the end with your bill. You’ll be surprised to see how reasonable the total is at the end as well, considering how satisfied you’ll be! Guaranteed!

The other Saturday the boy and I were apartment hunting in Oakland(yes, we’re future Oaklanders – the horror!) and had some time to kill between appointments. He was hungry, and I have this disease where I can’t say no to food – I think it’s called imafatassitis. So, right across the from our next appointment there it was – Sushi Plus. Normally, with a name like that we’d keep looking, but time constraints are a bitch, so we walk in and sullenly check out the menu. «Holy shit! $ 8.95 bento!!!” – me «Holy shit! Flat screen tv with ESPN!!!” – the boy SOLD. Truth be told, I have a stomach of steel. Not like a 6 pack. Think: human garbage disposal. Ex: I can eat cake batter or sushi that has been sitting on the counter for 24+ hours without getting sick. So I knew my gut could handle whatever this place threw at me… the bf was on his own. How was it? Tasty. Fresh tasting sashimi and nigiri. No battle shits for me and the boy! But unfortunately, no freebies were involved, as I have come to expect from a Korean joint. It’s okay; I still feel like we paid for«street hooker» and got«geisha» quality. When we move next month, I now know I can pacify my «I miss the city» sobs with cheap, delicious food. Funny – I’m not so scared anymore. Sidenote: If a toothless-high-blubbering-like-a-baby-hobo-lady waltzes in crying for food, don’t run away(maybe just cover your food). It’s pretty hilarious seeing a sheepish Korean man shoo her away. We thought of it as a «welcome to Oakland» moment.

This is one of those places that I would be willing to drive miles to get to but that just happens to be very close to my house. And, as is the case with many of my favorite establishments, they seem to be very underrepresented on this site. So I am doing my part to get the word out because last night I was there at 7pm and the place was empty. Not a single person came in the whole time we were there, yet the sushi chef remained diligently behind the counter, managing somehow not to look bored. Usually I find that service is worse when restaurants are slow because the servers get negligent but not this place. Our server was very friendly and attentive. She stayed close enough that we would only have to look up if we needed something but far enough away that we had enough privacy. Seriously, I would be willing to deal with the wait just to see this business thrive because that’s how much I like it. The prices are totally reasonable also. Last night we had 4 rolls and the bill came to $ 30. Can’t attest to the sashimi or nigiri as I have only had their rolls, but the rolls are carefully and skillfully prepared and very tasty. Do me a favor and go check this place out.

The selfishness in me doesn’t want ANY of you to find this gem and take over and make them so busy that their service and quality decreases. But alas, my duties as an Elite is to spread the love of things I love… and I fell in love with Sushi Plus last night. On the recommendation of my boyfriend’s sister, she suggested this place since there really isn’t a lot of good sushi in their neck of the woods. We went to Sushi Plus on a whim and it wasn’t busy at all. Got seated and were served tea right away and as we browsed the menu, our eyes widened when we looked at the prices. Lion King Roll(cali roll topped with baked salmon): $ 7.40(are you kidding me?) Island Roll(Spicy Tuna topped with Seaweed Salad): $ 4.40 Three Times a Lady(albacore, salmon and magura w/avo and cucumber): $ 4.40 Another roll I forgot the name of(Shrimp Tempura, Crab, Cucumber topped with salmon, avo, tobiko and sauce): $ 7.40 Okay, so we’re sitting there thinking that the rolls will be small or whatever and kid you not, they come out and are practically Sushi House proportions(sans the assembly line of Mexican sushi chefs). The salmon on top of the lion king was perfectly baked… not over cooked like other places. There is a teriyaki-ish sauce and it was possibly one of our favorite Lion Kings in the bay. Island roll is exactly like sushi house’s and definitely is big on the spice. 3x a Lady roll was my favorite and the other roll I don’t remember the name of was good, especially with thin lemon slices. One gripe: yes the Miso is free and in a generous bowl, but it is WAY too hot. Piping hot that I had to wait a bit til it cooled down. But hey, it was $free.99, but i’m just sayin. And for 4 rolls, we were stuffed and paid $ 28. So yes, if you’re near the Macarthur Bart and don’t wanna go across the island to Sushi House, Sushi Plus is an A+ in my book — especially for the price.

This is my boyfriend’s favorite sushi place. He never said why but I suspect it is because of: — Reasonable prices — Nice assortment of dishes. — Excellent service — Big screen TV displaying football I’ll go with the first four. ;)

Sushi A+! Ok but so, after my 2nd time coming here with the kids, I tell James(the owner). «Yeah we love it here. My kids love sushi. We just moved to Oakland & we live right across the street! So we’re really excited about this place.» James smiles and says, «Oh yeah, I know. I read your Unilocal review». Pppppfffhahahaha! For a minute there I had to think, «Shit, did I write a bad review?». As soon as I got home, I checked my review to make sure I hadn’t said anything mean. Luckily, I didn’t say anything bad. That would have been HELLAMODED! That was after my 2nd time. Now I’ve been there 451,646,751 times. Well not quite yet, but I know I/We will.

Just like Sushi House, only maybe a little better. (For Sushi House fans, mutual menu items like cherry blossom and Island roll. Sushi Plus is owned by family members) Why? I’ve been there twice since I discovered it last week. Both times, no wait to get a table. Once on Thursday, once on Saturday, both at lunch. I get that it’s not the most bustling neighborhood, but there’s a great inexpensive beauty supply near by, and of course the Barber School for a $ 7 haircut. It’s worth the journey for the food alone, however. Why else? My first lunch was a delicious and fresh bento, salmon sashimi, salmon teriyaki. I was in a salmon mood. It was exactly what I needed! Miso soup, salad with miso dressing, rice and gyoza accompanied. It was also only $ 8.95 at lunch and the servings were large. My second lunch was Oyako Don, which is my rainy day comfort food. It was rainy, cold, and I was having a shitty day at school. It was the best oyakodon I’ve ever had. No, really, the best. Plus, that came with soup and salad and was I think $ 6.50. It was massive, too, like two meals worth. Lastly, and why you really should go to Sushi Plus, is they keep your miso refilled through your meal. Did you know that miso is not a pre-meal ‘appetizer’ and it is to actually be enjoyed throughout your entire meal? Probably not if you’ve only eaten at Japanese places stateside. I wish I could give them an extra star just for their sense of tradition. The service is really wonderful. The only teeny tiny complaint I have, is the décor. It just doesn’t seem to match the food and service. I hope when this place is really in the black, they could give it a little more modern lift.

I’ve only been once, and I had the Korean-style chirashi(which differs from a Japanese chirashi in that the fish are chopped into small cubes, there are more veggies, and the dish is meant to be eaten with a korean spice paste and sesame oil instead of shoyu and wasabi). It was a great deal at around $ 12, and was very good(though next time I’ll try the regular chirashi). Ordinary I would find it gauche for a sushi bar to have a large TV screen dominating the décor, but in the case of Sushi Plus I didn’t mind, partly because there happened to be a Monday Night football game on which I wanted to watch, but equally because this place isn’t trying to be more formal than it is. I’m not sure why, but I have an uneasy feeling about the future of the place, so I hope people here patronize it so that it can survive…

god damn this place is CHEAP! They definitely have one of the cheapest bento boxes around. If I remember correctly the 2-item is around$ 10 – 11 and the 3-item is $ 13 – 14. Places like Sushiya and Koryo(I love both) have bento boxes as well but they are $ 14-$ 18. Anyhow my bf and I ordered two 3-item bento boxes, 2 handrolls, and 1 large Hite and our total was around $ 41. We had a TON of leftovers and left quite full. They also gave us a «service(complimentary) order of gyoza. NICE! The rolls and handrolls were all very, very cheap. I have yet to try their nigiri sushi and was hesitant to do so because under«Nigiri» they noted«1-piece» where it’s typically 2 pieces. I believe most of their nigiri sushi was $ 1.50(1 piece) except for the uni which was m/p. Oh and the server was very friendly :)

I’ve been anticipating Sushi + for several months as it is accross the street from my apt. I’m forever looking for a good veggie sushi joint. By that I mean a place that has more than the standard avocado and cucumber rolls. With 11+ amazing veggie rolls, each at less than $ 6, this place fits the bill. I had the veg-king, green goodness, and futomaki. All were unique rolls, super fresh and delicious. We assume that it is Korean owned as the rolls were overflowing with rice and thus a little tricky to eat. Never fear-we plowed through them The man had a bento box($ 10.90) full of Korean BBQ ribs, shrimp tampora, salad, a huge portion of rice and adorable dumplings. It also came with a salad(great dressing!) and miso soup to start. He cleaned is plate and cannot wait to go back. Being a new restaurant, service was on the slow side. Actually, our waitress pointed this out to us by bringing over some tasty noodles as a apology for the delay. We were having such a great time watching sports on their huge flat screen that we had not noticed the wait. It loses a point for a combo of the service, and because we seemed to be the only non-family members. Also, the music was horrible-late 90’s pop.

sushi plus takes over from korean bbq. the décor is creamy beige with fake bamboo stalks from floor to ceiling on both sides. no sushi bar visible. flatscreen showing sports news. music: rock samplings: –tempera(5.90)-4 pieces nicely fried with tasty shrimp inside –agedashi(3.90)-6 generous pieces made from hard tofu. i prefer soft tofu. result, texture isn’t creamy enough. –chirashi(raw fish over sushi rice 12.50) 18 pieces: 1 ebi, 2 lg tamyo, 3 small pieces each of sake, hamachi, shiro maguro, red snapper, white fish. not too tasty, not so fresh. –shiro magaro(1.50) long thin cut over small rice. so so, not super fresh. temaki(handrolls) –meter maid alert. street cleanings alternate evenings 12 a.m.-3 a.m. –not advisable to park on side streets in the evenings –one waitress clueless what her job entails(no clearing of empty plates, bowls). spends entire time watching tv. –employees wear red t-shirts with sushi plus embossed on it. –no sushi bar in view, sushi done in kitchen. –soft opening. owner/chef? came out and asked about the quality of the food, suggesions on improvements. –prices are cheaper, quality is lower(in some instance). –open till 2 A.M.

My wife knew the owner, so we had some hookups. Nevertheless the food is good, and it’s not pricey like every other Japanese restaurant. The owner James made this roll for us; it initially looked pretty rich and heavy. However the thin slice of lemon as well as the sauce actually made the roll taste a LOT lighter. The chirashi was $ 4 cheaper than other places. The nigiri was at least $ 0.75 cheaper than elsewhere. Check this, they are opened to 2am! I’m sure some of us has had late-night sushi cravings. The only bad thing I could think of is getting mugged or shot from the car to the restaurant, but hey, that’s how life gets exciting.

I went here today for the first time and while I am giving only 3 stars, I plan on coming back for a second shot. They just opened on Monday, so it really is unfair to give them a real rating until things get settled in. I had the hamachi sashimi plate and veg tempura. Pricing is right. The tempura was just OK, I actually wouldn’t order it again. the vegetables were actually fresh, definable and good quality, which is shame, because the tempura was more like fried vegetables than tempura. It was missing the crinkly texture of true tempura. Because of this, the batter was a bit oily. the sashimi was OK, nothing great, and while they offer 12 pieces, some were on the small side. When I openned the lid(take-out), i was pretty under-whelmed at the visual freshness, it just didn’t look like fresh sashimi or like good stuff I have tried, for example, Joy Sushi in San Mateo. Taste wise it was fine, had no signs of fishy-ness. the miso soup was average if not below. the salad was again OK, didn’t strike me as fresh, i thought the best in the entire meal was the dressing. Again, I plan to come back again to see if things are better or stay the same… if they stay the same, would I come back?, sure, when I was really craving Japanese and wanted something cheap and convenient. …if next time is better? …you would find me making it a regular weekly stop. UPDATE: was able to try this a second time for some sushi. Yes, the stuff is priced right! Had 7 traditional rolls(don;t get me started on fancy designer sushi rolls!) for $ 22! . My only gripe and this is simply a personal preference gripe, not a negative thing is that their sushi rice tends to be a bit on the sour side which is not my preference. a bit of sourness is completely normal for sushi rice, just not my cup of tea. I was going to keep my review at the 3 star level, but I always give the benefit of the doubt to business local to me, so a bump to 4 stars. Also, should be noted, I called at 330pm to order a to-go order when they were actually closed, the owner asked what I wanted, i suppose to make sure it was nothing cooked, and told me to come down in 10 mins to pick it up! …That gets serious props in my book. UPDATE #3! OK, from 4 stars to 5 today! in reality, still pretty much 4 stars, but I always give my local biz a 1 star push. I have been back 2 more times in the past week and a half. tried a Bento Box lunch and again today for somemore maki rolls. I am not sure if the owner(whose name is James fwiw) reads his Unilocal reviews, but I do notice 2 of my prior gripes have been changed on my recent visits. 1. Had the tempura in my Bento Lunch — it had the crinkley panko batter! in all honesty, it was crinkley, but a bit overcooked to the point the batter turned a light brown vs a bright yellow, BUT, a good sign since it was more like real tempura! 2. i ordered a crapload of Maki rolls tonight and whaddya know! …the rice lost the hint of sournesss it had last time! Love it! So, perhaps it is just by chance the 2 above things happened, if not and James if you do monitor your Unilocal reviews, the last thing and it is a small thing, but if possible, change the brand of Soy Sauce you use to a Japanese one. The Korean one you use is a bit different than a good quallity Japanese soy. The Japanese ones are a bit more sweet and work better with Sushi. I
