This is by far the worst Subway I’ve been to. I live around the corner and there aren’t many options for food over here so I end up coming here; each time with immediate regret. The line always takes forever, if there is enough staff for the line, there is usually a woman in the back stocking chips or something unnecessary. The food in the cold case always looks like hell and they microwave your cheese(not the oven, the MICROWAVE) for a minute and a half and often times are rude. They hardly know any English as well, which can be frustrating when trying to communicate, because you know, she’s making our sammiches

The only way this Subway could be worse is if they had Jared serving little kids. The veggies in the cooler looked old and crusty. I asked them to toast my sandwich, when I bit into it, it was as cold as the refrigerator. I let the lady know that made my sandwich that it was cold and she said«yeah its been broken» and pointed to the toaster. I told her that I would have made a different choice if I would have known and she should tell customers. As I ate the rest of my cold sandwich I watched her«toast» a few more sandwiches for customers. This is not my first bad experience at this location but it was my last. Buyer beware.

Terrible. Don’t believe the menu posted on Unilocal. They don’t have any of those cool Indian meat and veg options. Don’t even have spinach. The bread they gave me fell apart as I ate. Go to a different Subway or to the deli counter next door

Very good customer service sandwiches are always on. Explain how you want it then make it that way very patient for the areas surrounding them

Staff barely speaks English and has a hard time taking direction. I basically had to walk her through how to make a steak egg and cheese then she didn’t understand that I wanted a 3″ flatbread and not a 6″. After a moment of staring at the menu she got it.

DISCLAIMER — This is not a review of Subway Sandwich Shops as a whole, simply of the location on 7th and Mandela in West Oakland. Furthermore, I know not to expect stellar service at what is essentially a fast food restaurant, but even for that this place is setting the bar so low you’d have to dig ten feet down to find it. Terrible. Absolutely, completely, undeniably, 100% terrible. I can only hope one of Subway’s corporate managers has the misfortune of «dining» in this abysmal establishment. For starters: As several of my fellow Unilocal reviewers have pointed out before me, yes, there is a thick pane of bulletproof glass that separates the customers from the employees. Unlike my fellow reviewers, however, I find this glass to completely unnecessary. Yes, this Subway could be considered to be in a «rough neighborhood,» but it really isn’t. It is simply located across the street from the West Oakland BART station and thus receives a considerable amount of foot traffic. High foot traffic in a economically impoverished area = panhandlers. Put on your adult pants and get used to it. As for the danger that necessitates the bulletproof glass, that just isn’t there. Not one other business on that same street(which includes a grocery store, a FANTASTIC Mexican restaurant, a burger joint, and a LIQUORSTORE) has bulletproof glass installed in their businesses. It is a completely unnecessary obstruction for the patrons. Second: No bathroom. Again, what the hell? The other restaurants on this same stretch of road outside of West Oakland BART all provide restrooms. Granted, they are only for paying customers, but they are still provided. Subway, as a large corporate chain, could easily provide a comparable amenity. If I am unfortunate enough to be subjected to this location again, I would like to be able to wash my hands before I eat. With any luck, though, I will never have to set foot in there again. Third: The food itself. The preparation here is terrible. I know not to expect five star delicacies, or even one star, but could they at least pretend to care about how the food tastes? I ordered a foot long veggie max untoasted, which apparently they took to mean I also wanted the veggie patties raw. Just for purposes of clarification, that is, in fact, NOT what I wanted. And the toppings. The sparseness of the terrible day old toppings. I asked for lettuce, tomato, pickle and onion to start off. Fairly standard toppings for a sub by all accounts. They load it up with lettuce(no coincidence it is the cheapest of the toppings) and BARELYSPRINKLE any of the other toppings. I had to request extra pickle slices to get more than six on a foot long sandwich. I don’t think I’m asking for the moon if I want to actually be able to notice some pickles on my sub. At and the end, due to the bulletproof glass, they have to shove my sandwich, chips, and cup in the drawer and crush them on their way out to me. Delicious. What a complete and utter failure of a «restaurant.» This place should be shut down and completely renovated. Subway, you need to find a new franchise owner to take this place over. SUMMATION: The real problem with this location is the owners — they clearly just wanted to buy a franchise, ANY franchise, and make some simple, quick cash. They have to desire to further the chain, or pay any attention to what they do. And that is a HUGE problem when you’re a business owner. Furthermore, they seem completely disinterested in the surrounding community and show no desire to integrate themselves. That is most likely why they’re the only business on the block with bulletproof glass installed; not because it’s actually dangerous, but because they have made no effort to get to know their neighboring businesses and see what works for them or how they deal with their security issues. Finally, just don’t go here. Do not. This Subway location is a terrible and you’re better off going hungry than eating here.

Amazing people watching. I came in here to grab something before getting back on BART. I had to yell my order through bulletproof glass. It took way longer because of that. I had a seat to eat and watched customers come in one by one yelling their order. Never gets old.

You know you’re in a rough neighborhood when… The first thing you’ll notice is the bulletproof glass surrounding the counter. Can’t say I’ve ever seen that before at a sandwich shop. You have to talk through little holes in the glass, and the soft-spoken«sandwich artists» are nearly impossible to hear. Then they pass the food through a slide drawer. Top it off with no bathroom, and this makes for one interesting West Oakland dining experience. I’m sure the extra security is warranted, but a bathroom sure would have been nice.

Bulletproof glass was the first thing I noticed, completely sealing in the food cases and register. The second thing I noticed was why such a barrier was needed: drama. The woman before me in line was cussing out the employees over being charged to get extra cheese on her sandwich, while a sign directly in front of her on the food case showed the extra costs of extra cheese. The instigator eventually left after getting the cheese charger’s name and number. But in a few minutes she returned saying she didn’t get her receipt. Actually, one of the other two in her group had it. Then she left-left. I paid through the slot, got my sandwich through the slot, and left-left too.

Employees are behind a bullet proof shield. I was given my sandwich through the same security tray that I pass my money through. You know… sometimes a sandwich just isn’t worth it. :/
