Saturday afternoon — pretty quiet and smoke free. Its a drab establishment, but the tables are OK. No booze. Even had a motorcycle parked indoors for a while. One billiards table had big white bags of trash stashed under it — a nice touch :-( 5 pool tables, 4 billiards tables(no pockets)

Not a bad place to shoot pool. Pretty clean. I paid $ 12 for an hour of pool which is a good price for a friday night. There’s about 3 billiards tables and the rest are regulation sized pool tables. The tables are very well maintained. There’s at least one table I saw that has a ball return after you pocket it. I’m not sure about the house cues as I have my own cue stick. 50cent sodas from the vending machine and the free snacks are a nice touch as I have yet to step foot into a pool hall that offers something similar. I went outside to take a break and when I came back, the 4 ball was missing from my table. The lady at the register was nice about it though. When I went in there were only Korean clientele. It was a more diverse crowd by the time I left. My only complaint about this place is there’s not enough room between the tables. I found myself kind of cramped if I had to shoot from the length-wise edge of the table. Moving the chairs out of the way didn’t help.

This place is «ghetto fabulous» defined. So, not trying to say that I’m better than Sam Won Biliard, but I’m being honest: I’m used to Broken Rack in Emeryville. I’m used to a heater when its cold. I’m used to fans when it’s hot. I’m used to purse and coat hangers near each table. And when I walked in to Sam, my first thought was«oh hellllls no.» It was like 30 degrees in there, the floor was all kindsa icky looking, though the tables actually looked pretty decent regardless of the not-so-aesthetically-pleasing room. I took a deep breath and told myself to stop being such a stuck up #@$@ and give it a shot. First of all, candy and snacks in tupperware to avoid the bar-peanut-germ-grossness: win. 50 cent brand name sodas from the vending machine? Score. In the end… It didn’t matter that when my best friend was walking around the table to look for a shot that she stepped on some old dried up gum that stuck so hard to her shoe that when she picked her leg up, her foot came out of her shoe. It didn’t even matter that a pool player on the table in front of me had a shirt on that said, «I got that snow» in size 250 font, implying that the snow he’s got was not weather related. What did matter, though? Leaving the place smelling like smoke even though I couldn’t smell any while I was in there. I know they have a patio out back and I’m guessing it wafts in since they keep the doors open but *shrug* it only bothered me when I got in the car because the scent was fairly strong. In the end, everyone had a great time here. The free snacks are a huge plus and it probably wont be our last time at Sam Won’s. Would I choose it over broken rack? Not sure. I guess it depends what kind of mood I’m in. It’s a great local spot, tables are $ 10 an hour, and you can’t go wrong! Give it a shot!

nice job Charlie G. Some undercover cop probably read your review and busted this place.

I’m sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but Sam Won no longer allows alcohol to be consumed on the premises. You can still smoke out back but I was informed by the staff that due to a visit from an undercover police officer, BYOB is no longer allowed. Nevertheless, Sam Won is the best pool hall in Oakland: relatively cheap rates($ 10/hour), free candy, friendly staff, and well-maintained equipment. Unlike many popular pool halls, Sam Won has straight cue sticks, perfectly level tables with unblemished felt, and they even replace your cue ball once per hour with a clean and polished one. I’ve been reluctant to write a review on the place because I didn’t want to give away another one of Oakland’s secrets — but I figure they could use the publicity.

This place is the chillest, you can get your pool on as well as drink and stoge. Tables are only ten dollars an hour and you can buy beer and cigarettes from the guy at the door. They also give you free candy, siiiick
