Pizzaiola just hosted a magnificent dinner for some 120 teachers and farm to table advocates for the Edible Schoolyard Academy. I’ve dined all over the world and I must say that the service was exceptional and the meal was delectable! I loved it all from the cracker, pizza, and oyster testers from the beginning to the salad with water melon, mint, mozzarella and nuts at mid stride and the cookies and strawberries to wrap it all up in a filling and delicious bundle. The servers were incredibly helpful, the cooks were very sociable and the owner remarkably generous. I am so fortunate to have had an opportunity to test this restaurant out in this setting as I’m certain I will visit it again in future trips to the Berkley/Oakland area. Thank you Pizzaiola for a wonderful experience and meal. I am satisfied and inspired.

$ 3.50 for small order of bread? Olives($ 3.50) were at least good… drink small for $ 11 and not very good… pizza was average at best… main course: only choice of 2! Dry, cold, overcooked and OVERSALTED; terrible oily stuff on top; string potatoes, overcooked and over salted; only thing good was desert… dinner for two $ 127! I think not!

An Oakland staple. Delicious food in Temescal with patio seating on warmer nights. Nice ambiance in general. The cocktail menu is on point. The food is great — the pizzas are perfectly cooked and maybe my favorite in all of East Bay. My one(GIANT, SCREAMING) comment is they make no substitutes, and my entire family is gluten-free but me(truthfully gluten-free, as in celiac). So this place is not gluten-free, or a good choice IF you have people in your party that are(nothing sucks more than being forced to eat a salad while your friends devour a delicious pizza). I’d love for this to be a staple in my week /my family’s week. Until the gluten-free option arises, this place is for me on special occasions.

it’s bougie but tbh it’s also dope. truly vegan unfriendly, but I mostly just come for the vibe & to feel cool lolll. one time I ran into my dad here and he left because he was mad that someone as unsophisticated as me would be there ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I’ll start with the good: Service and atmosphere were both on point Drinks(I had 2 blueberry whiskey smashes) were tasty AF Avocado/anchovy toast appetizer was fresh and delicious The bad: I was VERY surprised at the subparness of pizza. The crust was doughy/raw tasting and undercooked. It was charred on the outside but undercooked on the inside, almost as if they’d cooked it too fast. Not crispy at all, no flavor. The rest of the pizza was soggy and droopy. However, the toppings(we got housemade sausage and tomato sauce and pana) were fresh, bright, and great. The actual vehicle for those toppings(the pizza itself), however, was extremely disappointing. Either the cooks need to slow down and actually finish cooking the food they’re churning out, or they need to reassess their neapolitan pizza recipe. The pasta was also undercooked. We’re talking way before al dente. Like, raw tasting, barely toothsoome. We got the rigatoni with pork and chicken. The pork/chicken/buttery, herby sauce was delicious, but again, the actual vehicle for the sauce(the pasta) sucked. We should’ve sent it back. Worst of all is the price. The pizza was $ 20, the pasta $ 18. With other spots like Pizzahacker in the city absolutely KILLING the game with pizzas that are on a totally different(BETTER) playing field than Pizzaiolo that cost $ 15 – 17, I will never come back to Pizzaiolo. There’s absolutely no need to.

After seeing Pizzaiolo reviewed on Check Please we decided to drive in from Walnut Creek for dinner. Our dinner was outstanding!!! Everything we had had wonderful flavors and tastes. We started with a salad, then split a pasta dish, and finished off with the Margherita pizza. Had we been able to eat anymore we probably would have ordered more. My only complaint is the parking. It is a very difficult place to find a place but it is well worth it once you arrive. We can’t wait for our next visit.

Been 4 times now. One of my favorite spots in all of Oakland! Excellent food. Servers have always been very kind. It’s hard to get a reservation but there is a community table that it FCFS.

We had a great dinner here last night. The winner was the avocado toast(with anchovies — YUM), but the pickled turnips /red cabbage with the bread/butter was a delicious combo as well. We tried the sweet onion/sausage/ricotta pizza. It was tasty, but I would probably order differently next time. Would have liked a red sauce on it(it was a white pie). Service was great! And we were seated right away with no reservation at 8:30 on a Thursday night.

The Good Yummy drinks Cute place Atmosphere The Bad Way over priced Lacks flavor Small portions If u ask for water it’s room temp no ice I tried it, won’t be back… actually maybe for dessert they looked great, but won’t be eating. The price would have been whatever if at least the flavor was there but everything is very simple. We ordered a cheese pizza for the kids and it was basically a sauce pizza with a dash of cheese. They didn’t touch it :-(. Our pizza the sausage was OK it’s not gross but not nothing i would pay for either. It was just boring in flavor. The place is super trendy and cute though, but food wasn’t worth the $ 100 I dished out for 2 small pizzas a beer and a cocktail one soda and a shirley temple that was more of a strawberry lemonade fizz(good but wasn’t no shirley temple) Oh and room temp water is definitely not my thing

The ambiance is quite warm with dim lighting, a very classic rustic Italian feel. Definitely better for a special occasion because the prices aren’t everyday cheap. We got there around 5:20pm and there was already a few people waiting outside! We tried the rapini & housemade sausage pizza and balls of homemade mozzarella cheese which was delicious! It was a great balance of savory and had a generous amount of cooked rapini all over the top. The crust was perfect — very thin but not soggy at all. Even the center was still crunchy and the crust was just the right amount of air bubbly chewy. The only unfortunate part was that I shared a pizza between two people and I was hungry after about five more hours.

I was really looking forward to this place because of all the good reviews and the interesting pizza toppings, but I’ve honestly had way better wood oven pizzas. The crust was good, but honestly the toppings and sauces didn’t blow me away. I guess my expectations were too high. I probably won’t be back because of the high price and average pizza.

Went here for dinner on Friday night and was treated to one of the better meals I’ve had in the East Bay. For starters, the ambiance is awesome. It’s a little bit rustic with a modern feel and the lighting creates a fun environment. Their menu is simple and great for sharing, and their drink menu was diverse and bomb(Gin & Tonics are the way to go). The food took a little bit to get to the table, but it was well-worth the wait. I will definitely be going back

Disappointed to say the least. We ordered take-out and it took 20 minutes for us to even get someone on the line. That should have been a sign. We ordered the meatballs and the pizza with guanciale and hot peppers. Meatballs were 16.00 and pizza 20.00. I had heard good things about this place and was excited to try the food. We live a mile from this place. The hubby went and picked the food up and brought it back. Mind you, we are a mile from there. Get the food and it is super cold. We got four meatballs which comes out to 4.00 a meatball. Looked at the pizza and it looked like it barely had anything on it and it was small. For what we paid, the food quality was not that good at all. The meatballs were good, bread ok and pizza meh. Will not be going there again. Lesson learned.

Tonight(saturday night) went there for dinner. 1) wait is not bad, 30 minutes waiting 2) Décor is pretty interesting and look old(stylish-old) like a restaurant in Italy. 3) I ordered clam spaghetti. Did not know they put so much chilli or hot stuff. I can’t eat at all. I have to wash pasta with water. Waiter is nice to offer to ask Kitchen to re-cook another one. But the dinner already took forever. Just make sure you plan 3 hours for dinner, just like in France or Italian. Swordfish is good, Dessert is good. Basically they charge a lot of $$$ per glass of redwine and food is tasty overall. Just so «SSSSSLOWWWW».

One of my favorite pizza spots in the bay. Everything we had was great, from first course to desserts to drinks. I love their pizza dough, chewy and crunchy at the same time. The pizza itself wasn’t too saucy, with just the right amount of cheese. I personally prefer pizzas that are not over sauced or weigh like bricks with toppings. The atmosphere was charming and the service was friendly. No complaints!

One of my favourite italian places in the bay(and I am from Italy)! Must try: their meatballs are amazing. Thank you for reminding me of home! Pizzas are all yummy, totally worth risking with«non-traditional» flavors. Hipster ambience(love it!)

The perks of having your Bestest live across the street from Pizzaiolo is that you can eat here whenever you feel like it. Hooray! The Pros: 1) Neapolitan pizza style 2) Great and unique toppings The Cons: 1) Dessert 2) Pricey topping/extras 3) Ambience I did enjoy my pizza with tomato sauce, guanciale, hot pepper, and panna with arugula as extra topping. I wish they had better dessert though. I hope you give this pizza joint a try. Cheers!

I wish I could give the drinks 4 stars and the pizza 2. Brick oven pizza is supposed to be eaten with a fork and knife. If the crust is too tough to cut into, that is a problem. I had this problem here. I like the ambiance but am not a fan of tough pizza.

When your server used the word«herb-ascious» to describe bitters… and then follows it with«they’re bitters, you know, they’re bitter»…you might want to call it a night there. Or at least ask for another server. We chose this place because of the reviews. But upon further investigation, this place is not worth any more than 2 stars. Things I liked: 1. The atmosphere. It was quintessential hipster from the tap water served in decorative green bottles, to the tea lights everywhere. 2. The cocktails. They were hand crafted and unique. They were things you would never order in a bar in Vegas and we liked that! … that’s it. The food was bland and extremely over-priced. The service was awful. I was in the service industry was 10 years, so I have a lot of patience, but this girl was awful. She took forever to greet us, took half the order and didn’t come back for ½ an hour. She never checked back with us after our food arrived and didn’t even thank us for coming. Go for the drinks… then leave.

My dinner party were all extremely pissed off. We will never return, and actually asked for a refund but the server said that because we were from«the suburbs» we didn’t understand what great food is. Two of our pizzas were burned, more than just charred, but BURNED. As in not edible. We asked to have the two of five pizzas remade and were told that was not possible because that is how all the pizzas are made. This is overrated Temescal hipster trash pizza. Good luck and I hope that server gets fired.

These Bay Area pizza places have to step it up. I was so pleased to get a reservation at the last minute and have a cute little table at this place in the back. Brother and I ordered foods — appetizer and 2 pizzas. I’m terribly sorry to report that everything was hella bland. I want to say I ordered a pizza with Arugula and poss Brussel sprouts as well as a Margherita. I don’t know if meat entrees/pizzas are more flavorful but apart from the toasted bottom of the pizza, I did not taste much else and this made me sad. The ambiance of this place is quite nice with older, bougier white people and general SF/Bay tech elite peoples crowding tables, commenting on wine pairings and instagramming the shit out of their food. The food itself, at least for lil old vegetarian me, left a lot to be desired. I’m grateful for the presence of Cheeseboard pizza in my life. A cheaper alternative that can fix all my woes re: the Bay Area pizza scene.

The space is lovely and comfortable and has a great vibe. I’m from NYC so have high standards when it comes to pizza. Pizzaiolo’s pizza is perfectly charred and the quality of the toppings is excellent, from the fresh mozzarella to the broccoli rabe and home made sausage(delicious!) But the reason I’d go back is for the sensational gin and tonic. They make their own tonic, which is infused with herbs, flowers and citrus. It’s a «brown» gin and tonic, so don’t be surprised when it arrives and it’s not clear. Absolutely amazing. And the pizza is great.

This place makes me scratch my head. Have been twice in the past 1.5 months, and everything –cocktails, salads/appetizers, main dishes/seafood, desserts are fantastic– WITHTHEEXCEPTIONOFTHEPIZZA. Have tasted 4 pizzas here now, and overall disappointed 3 out of 4 times. Charred crust yet soft without the chew or structure that some Neapolitan/thin crust pizzas can have and that I’d really want for an artisanal upscale place. I know pizza preferences can be really subjective, but I really wish they could at least be more consistent– even ordering two margarita pizzas in a big group on the same night the first one came out crisp and then 20 minutes later 2nd one came out flabby and soft. On the upside! Highly recommended: — gin and tonic(seriously, house-made tonic was amazing) — panna cotta or almond cake — any of their seafood dishes(fish, scallops) Am also very excited that they are supposedly baby/kid-friendly if you go early around 5pm. We’ll be back for drinks, dessert, and other food. But not pizza. 5 stars for everything else, 2 stars for the pizza. Am still on the hunt for a pizza place in the East Bay that compares to Ragazza/Gialina or Montesacro Pinseria in SF…

Amazing experience. Atmosphere was fabulous per usual. Coming in at 5:45pm on a Thursday, it was hopping. We started wth their absolutely amazing bread(second to only Tartine in SF)! We then had the puntarelle and Jerusalem artichoke salad – very good. Not too big, but great. We also had the broccoli with pepper and breadcrumbs. Also good, but less notable. Amazing with a side of the aioli that came with the fish stew(garlic, lemon and tarragon dip that I would love to slather on practically everything). The main pizza was different from normal offerings: rapini and pork belly with extra mozzarella. Pork belly was excellent and the crust was so tender and delicious. Best pizza in the bay. Our service was absolutely fabulous. Hasti was so knowledgable and friendly – one of the best servers I’ve ever had in my many experiences dining out. She was attentive without hovering. A hard balance! Will be very eager to return! Portions aren’t huge but I’d rather not leave sickly full or be able to try more!

Excellent Italian restaurant in the Temescal region. On the outside, it doesn’t look like much. In fact, Pizzaiolo is neatly nestled between stores and it’s easy to walk past it if you’re not looking carefully or if you’re in a hurry. This isn’t a place to dine and go. Trust me, you’re going to want to take your time — soak in the atmosphere and savor the dishes. My husband and I didn’t have reservations on a Wednesday evening. Although we were walk-ins, we were seated right away and even had a choice if we wanted to sit in front or at the back. We absolutely loved the décor of the place. The candle tea lights on the tables, the rustic look of the decorations, etc. Pizzaiolo really does feel like you can be in a small, petite dining place in Italy. Rapini & Housemade Sausage Pizza($ 20.00) — Good for an appetizer. For a meal, it’s meant for one person since it is thin and small. Flavors are unique but we prefer Chicago-style for our pizzas. Panna Cotta — DONOTMISSTHISDESSERT. If you do, you will forever regret it. The evening we went, they had vanilla panna cotta with berries. It was heavenly. Perfectly made. The dessert sparked a perpetual craving for panna cotta. I just can’t have any other dessert.

We finally got to try out Pizzaiolo and it was worth the wait. We didn’t have a reservation so it took us quite a while to get a table. So if you’re planning on going here we recommend making a reservation. The drinks were great. I started off with a La Macha then moved to beer and wine and everything was really good. We shared a bunch of items and at first it seemed like a lot but it ended up being the perfect amount. We started off with the little gem and fennel salads. Both were excellent and the dressing on the little gem was great. We then got the Fagioli pasta which was light but delicious. I wish they had included some more sausage on there. For pizzas we got the potato and cherry tomato pizzas. Both were very tasty and light but I’d give the slight edge to the potato one. Great restaurant in a cool neighborhood with light, delicious food.

We were seated at the bar, but the bartender that was supposed to serve us didn’t greet us for quite a while. The hostess gave us menus, but I had to personally address the bartender to place our order after waiting for some time. He managed to be attentive to the people who sat on either side of us though. We tried the homemade bread and butter to start with. Nothing special, and especially not worth it for $ 2.50. It was neither warm nor soft, and for this quality it should at least be complimentary, although I’ve had complimentary bread elsewhere that’s at least fresh out of the oven. We also ordered the marguerita pizza. Thin crust style, but some of the crust edges had spots that were burnt. There was also little mozzarella cheese, maybe one small piece per slice. Disappointing service, meh food, and the only aspect I enjoyed was the ambiance. Came with high expectations, but, unfortunately, was overall an underwhelming experience.
