I ordered catering for 15 hungry men at the port. What more can I say but, it was ready & on time for pick-up. All of the men had bad experiences with other BBQ places and they scarfed down this food & didn’t leave me any left overs! Thanks to Charlotte for hooking me up with my own plate. Brisket was tender, links were poppin’ and the sauce was ½ sweet with ½ heat. Everyone left with smiles on their faces and that’s all you can ask for. I’m sure some of them are passed out somewhere on the doc. If you are looking to order for a party or Super Bowl, this is the place! Definaly worth the time and money. And, it’s all family.

Very nice place. Made me feel good coming here, and was hella hungry! Charlotte answered questions I had and the brisket was bomb! My lady had the pork ribs which were awesome! Music sent me back to my late teens, early twenties.

The ribs had a good bite, but not a lot of flavor. Ended up using a lot of sauce to get through it. The brisket(Texas allegedly) lacked any flavor in the rub, so had to sauce that too. The beans and potato salad were fine. $ 35 later I was full, but not all that satisfied. Why are BBQ joints in the Bay Area so scared to season their meat?

Best BBQ for me!!! I’m a butcher meat guy for over 25yrs. Best brisket I have ever had outside of Texas. Matt and his wife are running a nice local place to go to. I come from Castro Valley for this BBQ and I’m always one happy camper. Pulled pork is great, BBQ sauce is awesome. Love the hot BBQ sauce. Perfect heat. Always happy !!!

You could do much, much worse than Phat Matt’s when looking to scratch that BBQ itch. I captured and sent to my friend a photo of Matt proudly displaying his ribs. That same friend promptly replied to texted photo, «Oh god that is good looking.» My response and view is that The Utterly Indifferent has nothing to do with this barbecued goodness. The Utterly Indifferent(not the original copy) can barely keep the African continent fed, the mining companies away from Brazilian forrest dwellers, the Sunnis and Shiite Muslims apart and yes, Catholic priests away from children. No, I’ll give all credit to Matt and thank him for his barbecued goodness by returning again and again. And so should you and so says I.

It wasn’t the worst, but definitely wouldn’t go back at those prices, I ended up smothering the meat in sweet baby rays sauce, and the links were not real bbq, it was like pre packaged pre cooked, i didnt actually go, my mama went to pick up for the family, so i ate it since i didnt pay, but i wouldnt go spend my money at those prices.

Delicious BBQ! Can’t go wrong. Get the combo meat plate. Just come early, they close after selling out of meat. That’s a good thing. Enjoy.

Amazing BBQ… I just spent a week in Southwest including Texas… and they have nothing on this place. The portions here are generous… but what gets you is the delicious taste. The beef and chicken are what I usually order… very consistent! Service is very friendly and quick.

I don’t get the hype. Phat Matt’s was good, but was nothing extra ordinary. I had lunch there on 10÷28÷15. First, they never pick up the phone, so it is impossible to see if they are open ahead of time. Then the quality is just okay. I had the brisket plate with a side of beans and corn The beans and corn were good, but nothing worthy of getting excited about. Okay, maybe the corn had a little more crispness than usual, and that was cool. But the brisket they served me was quite gristly, and not superior to any other brisket. In fact I think Everett and Jones was best, and Uncle Willies is # 2. The restaurant has a decent amount of space, and the décor is nice, but the quality, well the quality is good enough, but I would never make Phat Matt’s a priority, and I don’t think you should either.

First I’ll start out by saying I am southern born and bred, and was raised in NC, therefore I am pretty confident in my opinion of real BBQ. that being said, you will not find better BBQ than Phat Matts. Cooked over a real wood fire, and the meat is so good it doesn’t need sauce(the way it is supposed to be) There are a lot of BBQ posers out there, but Phat Matts is not one of them. If you don’t like their BBQ, you don’t like BBQ.

Better show up when they open at 11am. They tend to sell out due to large orders. Got there at 2pm and bought their last tri tip.

Crazy good competition winning BBQ. And just like the great BBQ spots in Texas, they sell out by 2pm. Get there early and GETTHEREHUNGRY! Charlotte & Matt don’t mess around when it comes to serving sizes!

If you are in Oakland and want fabulous bbq this is the place. My bbq pork melted like butter in my mouth. My friend had ribs and raved about them. We were just driving around, we don’t know Oakland. We Unilocaled bbq and got the recommendation. We were very pleased!

Sorry guys, disappointing. The chicken is definitely worth it. Brisket is not, ribs are fine, pulled pork is fine.

Real deal BBQ. Met one of the owners who said they only stay open long enough to sell out every day. This was the first time i have seen them actually open. Had the brisket with collard greens and mac and cheese. The brisket was amazingly tender and moist. The sides were standard, but not as good as I would have hoped for. The collard greens were supposed to have some ham hawk or bacon, but there was nothing but greens in the it. Not bad, but was missing that extra punch that I love about well made southern collard greens. The mac and cheese was just average homemade mac and cheese, and frankly worse than what i make at home, which was disappointing for a southern bbq spot. I would definitely return for more brisket and to try some of the other meats, but would probably opt for some new sides or just go for a sandwich.

Great BBQ. I saw their store front from my window 8th floor from the new Summit Hospital. My son and I had the BBQ ribs for lunch and we shared it. Very tender! We had the Mac & cheese and corn as the 2 side. I will go back next week to get the Ribs again for lunch. A must try. Better than Everet & Jones! Go early they seem to run out of ribs everyday. Tired of this place not being open. Hours suck. Wed-Sat 11 am — 7 pm Sun 11 am — 6 pm Not open on Monday and Tuesday. Equipment failure cases closure. Ran out of food and closed early.(Today) I’m guessing this a failure to plan. Maybe it is this guy just is not a good business owner. When a person tries to eat at your establishment three times in two weeks and is thwarted it has to be and issue with the management.

Just ate one of the most disappointing meals I’ve had in a while. I’ve been on a ribs craze these past two weeks so I’ve been eating A LOT of ribs and Phat Matt’s BBQ was by far the worse. I ordered the two-way combo(tri-tip & ribs) with the Mac & cheese and corn. The food came out very quickly which should have been a sign. The tri-tip was tough and lukewarm when served(like re-heated meat) the ribs appeared undercooked and chewy and left me with a nasty aftertaste, the Mac & cheese was bland and greasy. The corn was the best thing that I ate and it wasn’t even that great. Maybe I came on a bad day but I don’t know how this establishment has 4 stars on Unilocal.I love BBQ and should give it another try but my taste buds won’t let me.

Ich habe eine TV Reportage gesehen in der das Restaurant vorgestellt wurde. Nach der Landung in San Francisco direkt dort hingefahren und nach einem 12 Stunden Flug das beste Brisket gegessen, daß mir je unterkam. Da brauchte man kein Messer… Zart und lecker…

*Sigh* I was hoping that this place would blow me out the water. I have had my eye on Phat Matt’s for quite some time. Me and my sister have been craving bbq and wanted to try a new spot and we both had this one bookmarked so we gave it a chance. When we walked in we noticed it was a very small place but it looked like a legit bbq spot, it was set-up like the bbq joints back East or down South. There were a few people in there but not as many as I had expected but this could have been due to everyone watching the football games. The lady behind the counter was very nice and welcoming, we told her it was our first time there and she gave us a little history, breakdown of the menu and her recommendations. I’m a Tri-Tip girl but I decided to get the brisket with the mac n cheese and baked beans while my sis got the ribs with mac n cheese and greens plus we got sodas. The total was about $ 30 not too bad for a bbq joint. We took a seat in the corner by the door and as we waited for our food I was impressed by all their award ribbons, pictures from competitions and assorted memorabilia on the walls. The food came out very quickly probably about 5 mins or so, while my sides looked very yummy I was less impressed by the looks of my brisket. The woman at the counter stated that the give hefty portions of meat and they don’t «skimp» on the meat but I only got two pieces of brisket. I was very disappointed in the brisket it was extremely dry, I thought dipping it in the mild bbq sauce would help but the sauce wasn’t to my liking either it had a very strong vinegar taste(Not good at all). The macaroni and cheese was ok not the best but it wasn’t bad either, the baked beans were another let down, I was hoping they would have a smokey flavor and maybe some meat or bacon in them but they just lacked any real flavor. I was very disappointed with my meal here and I wanted so bad to like the food but it was a huge let down. While the atmosphere and the service was wonderful the food just did not do the job.

Last Friday I was craving me some BBQ and my co worker Mike said let’s hit up Phat Matts BBQ… Man my mouth is watering as I type because I ordered me a BBQ Brisket Sandwich and chose the Spicy Sauce. I still added tabasco on top of that and Mike was looking at me like I was crazy. NOMNOMNOM … I chomped on that poor sandwich and ate the last piece of bread crumb too. Mike had a sausage sandwich and all you saw in our faces were smiles baby. It took a min to wipe down all that BBQ sauce from our face. LOL I had a side of corn and Mike a side of Macaroni. We were both very full and very satisfied and the tab was only $ 26.00 not bad because Super Serg has that $$ budget baby. I can honestly recommend this place to eat at and it will not be the last time I hit this joint.
