I have been picking up processed meat from these guys for the past few years ans they do an outstanding job of it! Not only that. The frankfurters, salami, and jalapeño pepperoni that they make is outstanding! Every year I pick up our beef I buy some of their house made products to take home with me. I wished I lived closer so I could frequent this place more often. Sadly I live three hours away so I will have to wait until next year until I can buy some more.

These guys rendered our friends steer, and did a great job dressing the cuts, and packaging up some choice cuts with labels. We also asked for some special ordered things, and they were up to it. Specifically, prepping the meat for aging, and cutting per the historical cuts for meat tenderness. They know exactly what they are doing and dont mess around. Cant get better unless you do it yourself!

I don’t know how long my family has been having the family steers butchered, cut and wrapped here but forever sounds about right. Everything is always absolutely perfect. We pick up our side of beef every fall along with the extra goodies… sausage, jerky, pepperoni ham hocks, bacon… Really outstanding!

In a world full of pre-packaged, color added, overly processed meat, Oakland Lockers is a breath of fresh air. Unlike the«butchers» supermarkets, these aren’t just meat cutters and wrappers, they are true butchers. As long as I have been alive, they have been butchering animals for local farmers. It’s a craft that has been dying over the last 30 years, but I’m so happy they manage to keep trucking on. I haven’t lived in Oregon for years, but I still make the Lockers my last stop out of town every visit so that I can pick up some of their infamous beef jerky to take home. I’m going to try to describe this carnivorous splendor, but in reality, words cannot convey it’s beauty. It’s like the dehydrated steak. It’s tender and chewy, with just a tiny bit of moisture still left inside. In fact, unlike the meat brittle you buy at the mini-mart, you need to keep this jerky refrigerated to keep it fresh. The flavor is robust and tastes like real beef, not just salt and flavorings. One of my most valued friendships was started because I shared a piece of this wonderful cow-candy a classmate sitting next to me in college. «Would you like to try the best beef jerky in the world?», I said. With a verbal scoff and a dismissive face, he took the piece from my hand and had a bite. His look quickly changed from questionable to overwhelmingly impressed. From that day on we were friends, and have since traveled over 4000 miles of US and Canadian roadway together eating everything from Deep Dish Pizza to Beef Tendon Stew. So to you, Oakland Lockers, I owe my gratitude. Not only for keeping the craft of butchery alive, but for acting as a bridge that helped bring together two unlikely friends.
