I popped into this market after reading about the live frogs in the meat department. Yep, they were there for $ 2.79 per pound in a big plastic tub. Some of them were already dead but many of them were alive, staring creepily at me. I contemplated tapping on the tub but I didn’t want them all to jump out at me. They had a ton of seafood and meat but the whole meat department didn’t seem as clean as I would’ve liked, so I avoided it. I don’t know how this place compares with the other markets in this area because I only dropped by this one. It looked larger than the ones I walked by, though. The eggs and produce were inexpensive. I picked up some hoisin sauce and red bean paste.

Wow, NSHF exceeded my expectations yesterday! Would you ever expect this Asian type market to let you EXCHANGE food that you were not satisfied with? I wouldn’t have… So I bought my usual three bags of frozen gyoza, went home, opened one, and discovered it didn’t look right at all. Peering through another bag it too seemed spoiled looking… (This could happen at any store; it’s never happened here before… I’ve always received fresh food at this place so one batch of their gyoza must have been bad or something…) At this point it had been three days since purchasing and I was really worried they wouldn’t let me return or exchange… But before accepting the loss of $ 7 I decided I still had to try… So I took it back 99% sure they wouldn’t let me return or exchange it being as they could just say it was I who let it go bad… But to my astonishment… They were super super cool about it and I was in and out in under 2 minutes! They didn’t even heckle me for my receipt! This, my friends, is yet another reason why NSHF gets 5 stars in my book!

there’s a large seafood and meat department in the back. at the front of the store, the veggies are priced right. there are oddles of canned/packaged ingredients for thai, cambodian, chinese and vietnamese cooking within this store. lining up to pay can be a bitch. people are always trying to cut in front oy you if you don’t cut them off first.

Live frogs and turtles in tanks, geoduck clams on ice, salted eggs in bulk, and many other marvels await you at this lovely supermarket. This is my favorite market in Oakland’s Chinatown. It has great prices on produce and other basic-ish food items, as well as some entertainment value, if you like looking at live frogs(which I do). The people here are really nice and friendly. The store is fairly well organized and clean, too.
