Mid Century Monger

Purchased 4 eamesy side chairs. These have to be some of the worst quality chairs I’ve ever used. Some chairs were not able to be assembled with the hardware that was shipped and the chairs that could be assembled fell apart with very mild use. This place is a complete ripoff. BUYER BEWARE!!!

This is not a showroom. This is a guy’s apartment, and he does have some chairs around, but I felt a little misled given what I was expecting. The neighborhood isn’t the best, and you have to navigate a lot of silliness to find this place to begin with, then to find that all he has is some catalogs and no real inventory was very disappointing.

Very happy with my two new aluminum group chairs. This is the ultimate fulfillment of the Eames vision: «The best for the most for the least.» Good dudes.

My husband and I ordered some chairs from them right before Thanksgiving. We had just moved to LA where they were supposed to have a showroom where you need to make an appointment to see the chairs. After making multiple attempts over many days and many platforms (Facebook, phone, email) we finally heard from them and were told that they no longer had a showroom in LA, but we could order by phone. So we placed an order. The total came to $ 536. after tax and shipping. We received them in two boxes, opened them and put together a chair. It was too small. My 5’11″ husband looked like he was sitting at the kid’s table when he sat in it. We called up and spoke to Frank and he was very nice, said of course we could return them, and even told us that they new chairs they were sourcing were going to be even smaller. So we took apart the one chair, packed it as it came to us into the same box and shipped them all back. Frank sent us the prepaid shipping labels through Fedex.
So today we inquired about our refund. My husband received an email from Frank saying «I noticed the Pink Acrylic chairs were returned to our Bay Area warehouse on Wednesday. I appreciate your prompt shipment. After conferring with our warehouse manager, I’ve learned that he unfortunately will not be able to inspect these chairs until next week, upon his return to the Bay Area.»
I wrote Frank this morning and said this is ridiculous that they would sit on our order for so long, that we expected a more prompt response from them and our refund to be processed. $ 536.00 is a fair amount of cash to be sitting in limbo somewhere.
However, I did not get a reply from Frank. Instead, he wrote my husband saying that the chairs had been inspected now and that they are damaged so he would only be refunding a portion of our order. To be specific, they are refunding us $ 171.00 total. So they are keeping $ 365. for «damages» after they held the chairs for almost a week without inspecting them.
I don’t know exactly what happened, but it has nothing to do with us. Perhaps it would have been in their best interests to insure their shipments. They had the chairs for an extended period of time in their warehouse, and they only responded to us after we pushed them on it. I would not recommend this business, or their goods, to anyone.

Studio is awesome and full of great furniture pieces, super easy to get to from the city. Frank was helpful and sweet — I knew what I wanted, but needed some weird delivery scheduling and he was really awesome about making sure I got my chairs exactly when I needed them. As for the product quality, they’re not originals, but they are absolutely gorgeous and well-​constructed. The price point is honestly amazing for what you get, and shipping is really affordable too.

Just do it. Frank is a gem. The quality is great, and the service is better. Stop reading reviews, you’ve got 5 stars across the board (and will one day have a lower review because they had an off day, but come on, who doesn’t).

I bought two chairs from Mid Century Monger a few years ago, and I’m happy to report that not only was it a genuine pleasure doing business with Charlie, the chairs have held up exceptionally well. I am revving up to buy a tulip table, and after much reflection and research, I’m going with Mid Century Monger again. The quality is excellent, and so is their ethos.

I wold have to say that this is hands down the most amazing customer service i have ever received. On top of an excellent product, its a win win. What a great company and an example of people doing it right! I will go to the top of the internet mountain and yell out to everyone to buy beautiful chairs from Mid Century Monger! AMAZING!!! Friendly people with Great quality products at reasonable Prices. I recently moved to the Bay Area from Houston and completely refurnished my home. I am a huge fan of mid-​century style furniture and MCM had exactly what I was looking for. I have bought several pieces from them and will definitely be back for more. My most recent purchase was the Eames Soft Pad office Chair for my home office and could not be more satisfied. Excellent build quality and extremely comfortable. These guys rock.

I’ve known Charlie for years. I’ve also bought 6 chairs from him and watched him grow his business from inception to what it is now. We’re both designers and that is often the topic of our conversation. The business is a fascinating one to me because of its alignment with the Eames’ vision of «design for all.» In every regard, he is trying to deliver on that vision. He works directly with the manufacturers to ensure the highest quality at the most reasonable price, service is paramount, and the overall customer experience is approached holistically — there is nothing that hasn’t been considered. This is a labor of love, for him and his partners. You might say, The Monger’s got your back.

Recently just moved from Portland to the Bay, and my eames replica chair’s legs were not sitting right. One email to Mid Century Monger and Charlie reaches out, for me to swing by with the chair.
I entered their beautiful studio and greeted by Frank, a chill dude who also spent time in Portland! A few examinations, a nut here and a bolt there and then boom! Fixed! It was like magic.
Charlie on the other hand was a great guy to chat with, he knows his stuff and polite as fudge. Designer to designer, he was a great guy to work with. Also picked up a Eames armchair rocker with fabric which looks amazing in my place (
). Great price, great sale.

I’ve brought several chairs from Charlie at Mid Century Monger over the last year and half. It’s a by-​appointment showroom tucked into an inconspicuous building in West Oakland. Once you get inside, you’re in a cool industrial space filled with a good selection of Eames-​style rockers and side chairs. These are replicas, but the quality is great and so is the price. Charlie is awesome to deal with: always very helpful & friendly. I love being able to work personally with another small, local business. I’m an interior designer and so far I’ve only bought chairs for clients, but I’m looking forward to buying some stuff for my house as well :)

I love everything about MCM. I’ve bought 6 chairs so far, and have plans to return soon for a couple more. The quality is great, the price is surprisingly reasonable, and the styles are awesome. Charlie (the owner) is also amazing — he spent a ton of time with my husband and I, giving us ideas, styling the chairs, letting us play around with different configurations, legs and colors. He also shared with us the history of his business and the warehouse is cool… just an overall rad shopping experience. And now we are friends! Can’t beat it.

Recently purchased two SideChair WoodBase Satin’s and they are just what I was looking for. Comparable quality to more expensive versions and would highly recommend them after spending some time with them. After checking out some of their other offerings in the showroom, I already have my eyes on some future purchases I will be back for (oh hey there Organic Chair ;)).
Oh and I can’t forget to mention Charlie is awesome. Super helpful, knowledgeable about his product and also a good sense of design to help with any decisions or debates you may have when making a choice.
I had a great first experience with them and will be back for more. From talking to Charlie they have some exciting new plans and always some new products in the works so always keep an eye out for what they have rolling out next. Definitely worth checking out if you are in need of some new ballin’ digs. Take the train, grab an Über, rent a ZipCar, hitchhike, just go, you won’t be disappointed.
P. S. I should also mention — don’t be perturbed by the surrounding area, it can get a little sketchy.
