By recommendation of someone we walked past in the neighborhood — this was the best sushi spot in the area! I’m leaving two stars because our rolls were actually good. Serve on the other hand well I felt like we were ignored Sat a mostly clean table within moments of walking in after being noticed We were given menus, water and miso soup. The waitstaff walked passed us numerous times and not once stopped to «check» on us As we were finishing up someone came with more water and our check. No Soy, no tea, no offer of other drinks, no salad, no real attention paid to us I’m sure that this is probably not a regular occurrence based on some of the reviews I read before we came As I walked out I noticed other tables had full service. I wonder if they just simply spoke up and asked for it

Don’t come here. this is not a Japanese restaurant, its more like a chinese restaurant. Everything tastes artificial and the rice is so dry. just walk across the street and goto oni sushi if you want real authentic japanese food, because no has almost everything kotobuki has.

Good, solid restaurant in the heart of the village. If you have a taste for sushi and variety, give this place a try. Salad dressing has great consistency and flavor, sushi is made fresh at the counter. They serve hot food too, in case you want something different. Solid sushi place.

The hot food was served cold, the sushi took 45 minutes to get to the table. The portions are small. The service was poor. Our waitress actually watched a member of our party spill hot tea on the table, walked away and never came to help us clean it up. Don’t put up with this restaurant — so many better ones in Oakland.

I’ve been going to Kotobuki since I was in grade school and just learning what sushi is. I was a huge fan when they were on Piedmont Ave, and I’ve had similar experiences at their Montclair location. I can summarize Kotobuki vs. its local competition in a sentence; Kotobuki is the least expensive option, with variable quality. I can’t speak to the current service, I only go in for take-out lunches at work. They’ve always been polite, and prompt with my orders. I do have to note that the last time I went in, the restaurant smelled fishy(not a good thing) and the lettuce in my spicy tuna roll was brown at the edges. It made me sad that browned lettuce would pass quality control at a sushi restaurant, but due to their competitive pricing I’ll be back anyway.

I love this restaurant! It’s been my go to place for 11 yrs now, it’s like home. There are some very traditional dishes– Beef Sukiaki, Donburi, and Gyoza to name a few. The food is wonderful, fresh and creative especially when you have them pick what to make. Catherine is a cheerful owner who greets you with a smile. Kanpai!

Best Japanese ever. Great value and vibe. Ramen is great and freshly made. Sushi is fresh and daily special always a must. Mama-San is friendly and occasionally makes sushi herself. Highly recommend uni and hamachi. Recommend green tea ice cream for desert or tampora ice cream. Go there if u never been.

A big old roach scuttled out and scooted across our table while eating. It sat there eating a grain of rice on the table as we groaned in disgust and recoiled. My wife stood up and nobody came over to check on us even after I quite visibly smashed the roach on the table with a piece of paper. Bleh! The ramen here had been ok, not great, but I won’t be coming back.

for f– sake, your toilet has been leaking for over a year in the men’s room and you can’t just go buy a $ 30 toilet flush kit from Home Depot? Last time I checked, CA is in dire straits with a sever drought and you show no interest in fixing this??? You’re draining an easy 100 gallons a day by ignoring this. Any water conscience person like me would notice this. This is horrible. That said, your food is OK.

Food was mediocre and didn’t look anything like the photos on here – I can’t believe those plates came out of the same restaurant I ate in tonight. The service was awful and I seriously contemplated just walking out at least 3 times during my meal. As a veteran service industry worker that is not something I say lightly, but I seriously just wanted to to leave so bad. I wish I hadn’t wasted my money stopping in here. Lesson learned.

Sushi from the Japanese sushi chef is good and fresh. Rolls are not made by him. Ambience is casual but sushi is quality! We usually spend about $ 50-$ 60/per person and leave quite full.

Was around the neighbor hood and randomly picked this place to eat at and the food was okay. The fish on the sushi was not fresh, and service was not good. Was not welcomed in when walked in and was told to sit anywhere. After giving us our food, no one came back to check on us to give us more water or tea.

Food was very bad. I am not a frequent reviewer, but tonight’s dinner made me vow to post this review. I had Yaki Udon, of which there was a picture in the menu. My plate arrived looking utterly pale and colorless, in direct opposition to the colorful menu picture. I am hardly a complainer when it comes to food, but my friend, who had Spicy Seafood Udon, commented after a few minutes that while the broth was tasty everything else in her bowl was tasteless. I immediately chimed in that my food was indeed tasteless, also, and not fresh. The broccoli, celery, chicken, shrimp, carrots, mushrooms, cabbage in my dish were definitely not fresh and were tasteless. The worst was when I had one of her mussels, which was the stalest mussel I’ve had to date. It could only have been worse if it had been rancid and spoiled. If you get good tasting food, lucky you. But, after the meal I had I knew I had to warn others. Service, ambiance, cleanliness all fine.

I’ve visited this place twice in the last six months. The first time, I got the combo meal with lemon chicken and a roll. This last time, a combo with the tereyaki beef with two rolls. Both times my food was excellent. It comes with miso soup, salad and rice. The combo plate itself also includes an asian slaw I cannot get enough of. I have not tried any of their specialty sushi’s(yet) but will upon my next visit in Oakland. Minus one star for the surly waitress. She never cracked a smile.

Word on the street is this place is kids dicey. I certainly think it’s pretty decent. I’ll oftentimes get take out. Minus one star because it isn’t consistent. Typical order(to share): 49er roll(my favorite!) Depending on who is in the back cutting the lemon, it can be a little chunkier or just perfect lemon slices. Piedmont roll(hubs fav): Pretty tasty. Spicy Tuna: This one is really big and it’s hard to get in one bite but it’s my favorite spicy tuna rolls of any place in Oakland. It has avocado and cucumber so it adds a little something different. Goyza: Sometimes perfect, sometimes soggy. Still taste good but it’s a texture thing. Anyway, it’s worth trying out. And if you dine in its kid-friendly.

I have never been impressed with this restaurant, but the location makes it a great meeting place. After yesterday’s meeting, I will just meet at the corner. The food was awful, BBQ eel not cooked, just fat I could tell you what it looked like but I don’t want you to get the visual I got. I left 90% of the food there, had the salad and the miso soup. The beef teriyaki well not sure that was beef either. My rolls even had old lettuce wrapped in them, I have never seen lettuce in a roll before, and was hoping to never see old lettuce. There is no service so really why even talk about that… Paid and got the hell out of there(not cheap, not sure why people are saying it is inexpensive), the saki killed whatever damage the food could have done. I cheated on Oni Sushi which is across the street, will no longer stray Oni… I promise!

We stopped in here for a quick lunch today since I was craving Japanese food. I had the lunch special with two items plus rice, soup and salad. The miso soup was pretty good, with plenty of tofu cubes. The salad was the typical Japanese restaurant side salad — iceberg lettuce with shredded carrots and creamy light dressing. the gyoza and tekka maki that I ordered were pretty weak. The gyoza were over cooked and brittle, and the tekka maki was just blah. My hon of hons husband’s udon bowl was much more successful. Perfectly cooked noodles in a tasty broth with plenty of chicken and veggies. Service was quick and professional. Tab for two came to $ 19. 2.5 stars. Next time we’ll probably go to one of the other Japanese restaurants in the neighborhood.

As at least one other review has mentioned this place’s name is actually Kotobuki Jr. It’s run by the kids of the Piedmont Ave location’s owner so thus the«Jr.» part. Most of the cooks and sushi chef’s are from the Piedmont Ave spot. I learned this from my friendly server. Too bad the food wasn’t as good as my server was friendly! :( Got an order of Gyoza($ 5.50), Chirashi($ 16.95), and 0.3L of chilled Hakutsuru draft sake($ 11.95). First out was some complimentary miso soup and salad. Pretty standard fare with some small tofu cubes in the miso and chopped iceberg for the salad. The gyoza were pan-fried(see dimly lit pic ), but were really soggy and mushy. Not very appetizing or flavorful. They came with a lime wedge on top. That was a first for me and I wasn’t sure what they wanted me to do with it. The chirashi looked promising with 10 pieces of sashimi(see slightly better lit pic ). 2 each of sake(salmon), hamachi(yellow tail), shiro maguro(albacore), maguro(tuna), and saba(mackerel) along with some seaweed salad, radish«noodles», shiso /perilla leaf, and 4 ¼″ slices of lemon. I’ve had paper thin slices of lemon on sushi, but these were suitable for the lip of my water glass. The shiro maguro and sake were ‘OK’. The other fish had this weird rubbery /plasticy consistency. These were tough, chewy pieces of fish and an altogether unappealing experience for me. I didn’t enjoy it and that was more than half of the fish! This is my first Montclair sushi. Now I’m a little afraid to try the other two!
