I mean, don’t think I’m expecting some fancy experience when I visit a local liquor store. After all, this is the site where so many of my community’s vices are exploited, overcharged and oversold. But I do expect some basic social standards to be in place, and I certainly don’t expect to be the recipient of racial prejudice when I’m spending my hard-earned dough at your business. I’ve only been in here twice but that was more than enough for me. The first time, I went in to buy some Swishers and the woman refused to sell me any. I saw them behind the counter and she said«We don’t have anything for you here.» I gave her hella side-eye and issued a polite«Come again?» that was really saying«Try me, Squarepants». After a brief pause she huffed«What you need?» and sold me an overpriced and stale Swish. I was fine with not patronizing her business but had no idea why she was behaving so ridiculously. Fast forward to last week when I had hit up El Farolito’s but still needed ze Swish to complete my outing. I knew I probably shouldn’t but since I had parked right in front of the store, I decided to just venture in and grab a few VERY, VERY quickly. But of course I couldn’t because the owners were reviewing the video footage of a younger and older Black man paying for something a few minutes prior. I watched the staff repeatedly rewind the video in an attempt to prove that the young man had handed them a $ 5 bill instead of a $ 20.(Oh, and just so we’re clear, the entire time the staff is doing this, no one will help me with my purchase even though it doesn’t exactly take three people to review a tape… Five, if you include the patrons.) Lo and behold, the tape eventually revealed that the young man had paid with a $ 20. The same woman who had been so rude to me previously dismissed the fact as if it were nothing even though two seconds earlier she had been willing to fight to the bloody death, repeatedly calling both men liars. I finally got(more stale ass) Swishers and left. But not before I turned to both men standing at the counter and told them not to shop at this racist shitshow ever again. This time, I’m sticking to my word.
