I went here this past weekend with my friend Jason E. to check out the«Remember Them» statue. Driving through downtown Oakland, I wouldn’t expect an area like this to turn up. It was a pleasant surprise indeed! The park is surrounded by high rise apartments which shelter it from the hustle and bustle of the downtown area. There are many benches available to sit, read, enjoy the sun, or just chit chat. I do wish that the statue had descriptions of each of the humanitarians so visitors could read more about their actions. However, there is a poem within the statue which is quite lovely. Take the opportunity to check it out if you’re in the area! Until next time, happy traveling!

This park is new, and when completed will be a space for public art. Just completed is the«Remember Them» huge bronze statue honoring famous humanitarians like Frederick Douglas, FDR, Chief Joseph and Mother Theresa. The sculpture is breathtaking, and includes a poem to inspire us to be better people. I enjoyed stumbling into it. Oakland is up and coming. As usual, however, it’s a «no dogs allowed» spot– another failure of the city of Oakland to move beyond the stereotype of dogs as dangerous filthy creatures, and to recognize them as the companions that enrich our lives. Instead of an ugly«no dogs allowed» sign, someday I hope to see a trash can with mits for picking up dog poop like world class cities have.
