Does anyone know where these folks ended up after closing? Kind Sir has to be behind a grill SOMEWHERE cooking those amazing quesadillas, this simply can’t be the end!

Axtlan per it’s standing board has street style tacos now @1.5 no fish available eats: chile verde, asada(1.5) –everything very spicy –meats semi-tender, obviously not the freshest –good amount of meats given 3.5 stars.

I loved their tacos! And they are cheap! I got their taco truck style tacos for $ 1.50 each. The guy who made my food was fast. He definitely knew what he is doing. My gf also got a bean and cheese soft taco for $ 2.25 and it was stuffed. Really worth it. CASHONLY though, so make sure you bring cash!!! The place looked a bit old, so it didn’t really look as clean. Really felt like I was getting my food at a taco truck even though it is supposed to be a sitting restaurant.

Cash only. Stopped by for a quick bite during an errand. First time being here. My girlfriend and I got a bean and rice taco and 2 steak tacos. Came up to less than $ 10. The portion was enough to fill me up. Even though it only said bean and rice taco it also came with pico de gallo, cheese and green chile sauce which I wasn’t expecting but was really good. It’s a small place and seems family operated. I don’t live near here but if Im nearby and I get the chance I wouldn’t hesitate to come back

I first came here about a month ago at the recommendation of my friend and have since come back a few times. Don’t let the appearance of the restaurant fool you. It doesn’t too clean or organized but their food is good! You basically line up, order your food, and watch it made in front of you(always nice to have a bit of security to see that the food is cleanly made). I always order their super burrito, which comes with rice, beans(black or pinto), cheese, choice of meat, salsa, and hot sauce(optional). It really is quite a massive burrito and a yummy one too! They have a huge variety of meats but I would have to say their carnitas is the best. The carnitas will sell out though so make sure to come earlier to be safe! The hot sauce has a bit of a kick but isn’t too spicy, which is nice. They also have another menu items, including nachos and tacos. The tacos look good and I am certainly planning on trying some soon! Overall, the place is solid. Good food at a decent price. I will keep coming back!

Super burrito with carnitas, black beans, hot sauce, and guac, please! One of the best burritos I have ever had. Friendly staff, simple operation. I wish they took credit cards, though.

Obviously hard to find parking since they only have street parking. The shop is small and I’m upset I paid $ 5 for a moderately sized, unflavored, leaky burrito! The beans were mushy, the burrito was way too juicy, and the steak had huge, hard pieces that were inedible for me. Disappointing to say the least :(

Best Carnitas downtown! I could eat here everyday… seriously! The size of their super burrito is ridiculously huge.

MMMMM Carnitas. Not for the weak of heart though, don’t expect any frills.

I think their menu is sort of inconsistently priced. A burrito is only 5 something, but each taco is 3 something? Their carnitas, though. Really really solid. I don’t usually go for the super, because that’s just a bomb that makes working after impossible, but the regular one is about right. Guac is 85¢. A good choice when I want a no-frills burrito for lunch.

My DH adores their batter-fried fish quesadillas. They only make a small amount each day and when it’s gone(which it is, very quickly, when they have it), no more! They do the fish in substantial cubes, meaning you get more sweet fresh catfish instead of just grease-fried batter. Cons: they don’t change their oil out often enough. Only a few seats, most people get take-out. The rest of the menu is okay but nothing remarkable. Pros: consistent and cheap. For quality we infinitely prefer La Calaca Loca, in the Temescal.

Decent taqueria. I enjoy their Al Pastor and I get it in a super burrito(rice, beans, melted cheese) with added guacamole. They have pretty good salsa and hot sauce. Their burritos are a good size for the value. I get mini-food comas when I eat them during lunchtime. I only wish they had took credit card. Overall pretty good burrito option in downtown/uptown.

Mediocre Mexican food but they are fast and cheap and it is the closest place to my office when I am in a hurry for a quick Mexican lunch. The best thing about this place is the price but that is all. Note– they only accept cash.

For the guy that wrote this below: «The guy handles everything with his bare hands and juices of the meats are flowing everywhere and he uses same towel to wipe everything down.» Man, are you living in a dream and never worked any thing remotely close to the food industry. Even if it’s a michelin rated, someone somewhere handling your food will use bare hands and probably even dropped some ingredients on the floor(5 second rule?) at some point. As long as you haven’t gotten sick over it, then you are good. This is your no-frills mexican joint. They don’t try to impress you with 10+ variations of salsa for you to cover your less-than mediocre burrito. The burritos are well portioned, cheap and good. They are cash-only so make sure to leave the plastic back at your cubicle.

Her name is Burrito… Carnitas Burrito.(c)Marshall Eriksen Oh, and a Jarritos soda. And their hot(tomatillo based, i believe) sauce is very spicy and one of the best I’ve ever had. That towel he uses to wipe the board is kinda gross though… if you can look past that and the fact I haven’t gotten sick YET, then this is thee Uptown burrito joint.

I worked in the restaurant industry for over a decade and spent time in Mexico learning about their fabulous food. While Burrito’s are not the mainstay of anything you’ll find in Mexico(if at all, really) they are definitely a part of our culinary heritage in the Bay Area. So… This place is great. The care with which these guys handle their product is evident in every burrito, taco or other snack I’ve had here(I’ve been coming here since 2001). Go with the Carnitas for a journey into the sublime. Yum!

Came upon this place by accident. I had a Doctor’s appointment and was hungry… probably from stress cause I knew I was going to get a shot. You know, you eat when you’re stressed. Anyhoo, this place is Taco Truck meets the Soup Nazi. I had the some crispy tacos with carnitas and tons of hot sauce. I got some funny looks from the other customers when I asked for extra hot sauce. I probably ordered the wrong way from the Taco Nazi. I have to say, however that this is the best crispy taco I have ever had in my life. I wish it were closer to me. The End

3 stars for«a-ok”– I am kinda pissed off actually. I really was going to go to El Chillar on 17th Street(Note to Owners of Chillar — -consider a name change, can you imagine a website url of: http.www.//Antoleria Mexicana El — When looking at the Chillar Unilocal page, that suggestions nearby thing popped up and see lots of mention of Axtlan — -for the life of me, I could not figure where this place was — -google maps comes to the rescue — the street view i can see the Axtlan awning which I have seen a million times, but never took if for a Mexican burrito joint. Axtlan is more old school traditional like Happy Burrito a few blocks away — -less like El Chillar — – After eating a taco and burrito at Axtlan, I really wished i would have stuck to my guns and ate at El Chillar — –there was nothing wrong with Axtlan, although i found them to be a bit liberal with salt here — -but it was just your standard big burrito — I would certainly go again in the future if they were the only ones open on a certain day — -but with alll things being equal, i prefer El Chillar a lot more— this analogy may be totally off base, but here it is, I think you could figure out what I am trying to say — – When I think of Axtlan, I think of opening of a can, —when I think of El Chillar, I think of grabing something out of a garden.

Well, I’ll take people’s word for it that the carnitas are great. I try to stay away from red meat, so I’ve only had the tacos with chicken/beans. They’re not bad, and they’re cheap.
