4 Square of the East Bay

After trying WAKA kickball and hating it (I mean there’s only so much love for an organization where the 80 bucks of «dues» goes to watch the organizer and his buddies drink), a friend invited me to play foursquare. I’ve been hooked ever since.
There are many reasons why I love foursquare and continue to play as often as I can on Thursday nights – sometimes I can be a grandma but 9-​midnightish can get a little late for me.
First, our fearless leader Sam M. I gotta show that guy some mad love. He’s a fantastic host and he knows how to get a party started.
Second, the eclectic crowd can only rival the breakfast club. Seriously. I have met so many interesting and fun people at the square. From award winning architects to community health activitsts to some baristas extraordinaire – there’s no telling who will show up.
Thirdly, the thrill of getting to «A» square. It’s hard to describe this one unless you’ve played.
BYOB, a brown paper bag and an open mind. I’ve never had a bad night at the square.

Free, fun and f***ing awesome! Seriously, where else can you play 4 Square, listen to great music and hangout with nerds fronting like they’re cool? This event offers a whole other side to socializing outside of the bar/​party scene. There is no pretension, just people having fun. It’s a weekly event and has been happening since 2008. They show up to all sorts of East Bay street events and always have a good time. Show up, you won’t regret it. Thursdays from 9 to midnight.

good game, good people, good fun. why *wouldn’t* you want to play 4 square on a thursday night in a parking lot with super-​nice people? last night ages ranged from high school to mid-​30s, and there was one game that was more competitive and one that was more silly. sam, the founder, is really nice and makes sure to meet everyone who plays.

OMG.
I don’t know if this counts as a Unilocal-​able business, but tonight has officially been made one of the COOLEST nights of my life because of this group activity.
In short, I met up with a good friend tonight for some drinks and seeing that I had no obligations to attain to the next day, my friend suggested, «Hey…wanna play some FOUR SQUARES?»
Me: «Er…I dunno… dude. it’s cold and raining…»
Friend: «Come on. Just 5 minutes. Check it out.»
Me: «I guess… sure. why not. I’m buzzed anyway.»
We go to Rockridge BART Station. and there’s a group of about 10 random people playing FOUR SQUARES.
2 games in, my heart is pumping and my body is warmed up. I am totally in it! What a great way to get a cardio workout in the chillest environment! The competitiveness in me is dying to keep playin!
But the greater WOW! factor here is that everyone has a different story. Different reason that they are there. Every Thursday night. EVERYONE IS WELCOMED. Stranger? No one is a stranger here.
All in all. everyone’s there to just have fun playing FOUR SQUARES. Yes, even in the rain.
Everyone is really chill and open to meeting you. Reminds me of playin ultimate frisbee randomly in parking lots a few years ago at really odd hours of the night in college.
No skills necessary. Just come and play. And being buzzed/​etc. definitely adds a different dimension!
