Sushi always good but I have never waited an hour for a meal. If you can’t handle the influx of people u should get another sushi chef in there. Only sushi place in Oakdale, if you blow it now it will be a shame

I came in, was seated by a 6 year old boy who just put the menus down and walked away. (At least teach the kid customer service if you’re going to exploit labor from your kids.) Nobody ever came to serve me. So I left.
Came back another time with family, food was okay. They play rap music and top 40 Lady Gaga. Nobody goes to eat sushi to hear Kanye West, please turn some authentic culturally affiliated music on. It’s like going to an olive garden and listening to country, or going to a mcdonalds and listening to Mozart. it doesn’t work.
I gave two stars rather than one because you have vegetarian options.

This service is ok, no follow up. You will have to get up and ask for your items. I have seen and tasted lots better. Considering price. Don’t highly recommend it. Sorry that’s my opinion.

The food was not acceptable. The shrimp was old, cold and soggy. We each had one piece of a spicy dragon roll and it was bad. We sent it back and the waitress still billed us for half of the roll. We contested and she reported the boss told her that she had to bill us or they would lose money. The food was not fresh. They should have not billed us.

It took my wife there Friday night she was craving some sushi and it will be my first time having sushi the place was crowded we ordered appetizers then compression invincible show the glass of wine I had a water we ordered laugh more sushi for main course and never came they forgot about us and we only paid for the glass of wine and the appetizer we will not go back

I’m not a big sushi person, but I went there with some friends, I ordered the teriyaki chicken and a side of chicken fried rice… both were AMAZING, tasted great! The service was a little on the slow side, but I’d have to say I would definitely go there again, especially considering it is Oakdale

Good sushi favorite was the golden gate and very good poki salad I liked all the vegetables in it. They have good variety and lots of choices of rolls. We went early so did not notice the wait. Will go back

The sushi is always so fresh! The chef is very nice and always offers suggestions and even remembers what i ordered last time. The wait staff is helpful too, i just love that we have a fantastic sushi restaurant in Oakdale!!!

Not only is it great to have sushi in Oakdale… the sushi is good. We randomly tried the Hot Lips appetizer and it quickly became a «go-​to» item. The staff (owner’s kids) are always polite and attentive, in between doing math homework ;-)
Sitting at the sushi bar is fun because the chef clues you in to custom rolls and the best choice from their sake list.
This place is a gem for dine-​in or take-​out.

I honestly don’t see how this place got as many good reviews as it did. I’ve given Makara a dozen second chances because I love sushi. But practically every time I go, the service is awful and the sushi does not taste good ! The only good dish I’ve had there is the chicken teriyaki with rice, which is a very simple dish to make. But since they’re a Japanese restaurant I would expect the sushi to be WAY better. After my sushi had an icky taste last time, I’ve stopped going there. Ew. Sushi Garden from now on.

This restaurant is a little gem in Oakdale! We loved their Japanese food that was fresh and delicious. And, they serve the largest sushi rolls I have ever seen!
We live about 25 minutes away, but will definitely drive the distance to eat here again. Plenty of parking.

Last night I had Gyoza (potstickers) and the Hawaii Sushi Roll. The potstickers were so good, had a wonderful texture, and I loved the dipping sauce. The spicy Hawaii Roll is absolutely delicious, with great flavors and textures. We were greeted as we walked through the door by a smiling host and our waitress did an excellent job. My family and I will definitely visit Makara regularly.

Being in the service industry myself, I always try to be patient and understanding. Last night was the first time in my life that I did not tip a server, and this is the first negative review I’ve ever chose to write.
We got there at 7 PM. We ordered an appetizer, and about 10 minutes later ordered a sushi roll & chicken teriyaki bowl. At 8 PM, we still had nothing on our table. A server never even came around to acknowledge us, or tell us sorry for the wait, or refill our drinks. NOTHING. I walked up to the front & asked what was going on. They got frantic & said our ticket must have been lost. Really??? An hour into it and they’re just telling us?! We have been there before and highly enjoyed our meals, and they always tended to be slow & the service was never by any means excellent. But this was flat out ridiculous. We will NEVER be back.

Went in with my daughter. She found a bug crawling in her food. Keep in mind she had barely starting eating yet. Called the waitress over to show her. She took the plate away, my daughter did not want to order anything else, but when the bill came, the waitress did not take the meal off our check. Not very good customer service. Since then, two of my friends went and got food poisoning, both off the teriyaki chicken. I really liked this place when it first opened, and I wish it was better, because it was exciting to have a sushi place in our little town. Would not recommend them to anyone. Sorry Makara. I had great hopes for you.

That was just wrong… was that a gummy bear?
That Asian girl in Pitch Perfect… I think her sister was my server… you know the one can speak in a regular voice but also has that super quiet voice… she kept sneaking up on me and whispering.
Ok so the place is clean, service was prompt.
Food.ehh…based on the 2 rolls I ordered. not so good. She did suggest at the end 2 rolls that were good lol.
Cowboy roll — tuna inside was super mushy, but the sauce and beef was actually so good I ate the whole thing. I need more rolls with beef on it.
O.M.G. Roll– a deep fried roll that missed it. More tempura style and less fish n chips style frying would have helped. The unagi inside was seriously off, like chewing a gummy bear and an off taste. Imagine licking a walleye after it’s been laying on the shore an hour or so…
Sweet people. I bet the teriyaki is good.

I’m a Foodie! We sure all have the right to give our opinions so here goes! Two thumbs down! Went last nite, terrible service, and the food was the worst I’ve had in a very long time! I had the lion king roll and in comparison to all other sushi rolls and sushi restaurants I’ve ever been to it was a Hot Mess! Over sauced and disgusting nothing fresh about it! My husband had the Teri chicken and salmon dinner combo the salmon was uneatable
I would never go back, waited an hour and they only had 3 tables of customers, we were never acknowledged while waiting it was TERRIBLE

This is a five star for the fact that it’s a lot of sushi, at a great price, surprisingly good, and it’s OAKDALE. seriously, if you are on your way to Yosemite, this is a great place to stop. I won’t lie, I had low expectations given the locale, but I was happy to be proven wrong.
we all loved the Tiger Roll, the Jungle Roll, the Jimmy Roll, the Red Rose, the Cherry Blossom, the Sunset, the Red Dragon. but no question, order the Tiger. it’s huge and really really really good.
miso soup was nothing special though, and the hamachi kama was simple but the sauce was unimpressive (and not nearly enough).
will absolutely be here again.
