First their work… many of the iron work at McMenamin’s, Lucky Lab, etc. are made by Dan and Heidi. Looking through their portfolio its really amazing what they can do with metal, hammer, chisel’s, and anvil.
Second…I had the chance and pleasure of taking a class from Dan. It was over two days and its an introduction to the art of blacksmithing. First it was FUN!!! Second Dan is a great teacher… I’m sure I tested his patience as I’m not good with my hands at all… but eventually got the hang of some of it. I’m excited to get into it. With Dan’s direction I got to make several simple tools and projects that taught me the basics for forging… we even got to fire up the coal forge and I got to forge weld a chain. Sparks flying everywhere!!!
At any rate… if you’re interested in a very HIGH END iron work (keep in mind they are forging not welding pieces together) then keep them in mind. If you’ve ever thought of doing it from watching those movies… take the class! Its fun and you’ll be amazed at what can be done.
