This place is poorly maintained and stands in water. Many markers are damaged or missing. If you are interested in the typical New Orleans crumbling crypt, there are some here, but it is not a good representation of crypts. If you have relatives here, you need to contact whoever cares for this place and set up perpetual care for your loved ones. I think the area is probably pretty safe, most houses around it are well maintained.

I have driven by this cemetery on several occasions and have always felt the pain of seeing it so poorly maintained. Its more than kind of heart breaking. Most of the dates are old, I didn’t look at every marker, but the newest date I saw was 2003. There is plywood covering some of the graves, missing covers in some of the mausoleums, grass coming out of some of the mausoleums. The sidewalks have quite a bit of buckling and mud covering it. When I actually came in today, there was a random sneaker on a side walk, which is rather disturbing. There is a spooky air in the cemetery. Some of the graves had dead flowers sitting in the vases, while some had fresh flowers, and adds to the air of despair. This cemetery is on the small side, only one city block. The size could lead to quickly seeing everything, but as the walkways are buckling and some just washed out and mushy, it can make maneuvering through difficult. I would imagine that any new burials would be difficult down some paths. I would also imagine that it would be difficult for a physically handicapped alive family member to visit the sight of family that is already buried. A sign on the front gate asks for no soliciting, and it makes me curious to what is going on here. It is all very creepy and brings out a feeling of reverence in me.

While making my All Saints Day rounds, I stopped into this little cemetery. While I don’t know anyone buried here, I always like checking out the cities different burial spots. This was definitely more of the ill kept cemeteries I have been to, especially for an uptown cemetery. Despite that, it was still nice to check out. Some of the graves are falling apart and it made me sad that there weren’t more visitors on All Saints Day. I did see a groundskeeper who was going around straightening vases on the tombs. I think it was a groundskeeper. Maybe it was just a nice lady who had nothing better to do on a Thursday. Or maybe it was a ghost. Whoa.

Y’know one of those odd things about living Uptown is that your house may be in close proximity to a graveyard. I live a block away from this city block cemetery and the dead make excellent neighbors, no unruly parties, no blaring music. Bonus that I find the above ground tombs architecturally interesting and this reminder of our mortality grounding. As for the Valence cemetery, it makes me really sad that it is so ill kept. I’m surprised that folks are still being interred here and many of the tombs are collapsing. Turns out this cemetery is listed on one of the Haunted Tour websites as a top 10 haunted graveyard; not that I can tell and I pass by it often. It’s supposed to be open Monday — Saturday from 7:30 — 2:30 but honestly if you wanted to walk around the fence is only about 2 feet tall.
