There is nothing that stands out about this divey bar. Its not especially pleasant but not memorably unpleasant. The drink selection is not that great. Good location though.

Loved this place. During a recent visit to NO, my friends and I stopped in a couple times over the course of 4 days. That’s pretty good considering how many watering holes there are in a 4-block radius all over this town. It just felt very representative of all the great things NO has going for it. Mixed and diverse crowd? Check. Relaxed and somewhat divey scene with good drink options and fair prices? Check. Pool table with some pretty serious competition, but no jerks or table bullies? Check. Good jukebox? Check. Random barber’s chair at the end of the bar? Check. Legit crawfish boil and cookout in the middle of the afternoon? Check. I could go on, but I’ll stop. If you’re not curious yet, you wouldn’t like it, anyway. I heart you, R Bar. See you next time!

The R Bar is a very cool neighborhood hangout with awesome, affordable drinks and a great atmosphere. There were gambling machines, a pool table, and even an old fashion dentist chair placed randomly in the middle of the bar. The bartenders were very friendly and even played Hellraiser on the bar projector for no apparent reason. This bar has great character and separates itself from the other bars in New Orleans by being genuine and and eclectic.

I find myself in R Bar on Mondays for the $ 10 haircut + a shot deal. Laura does a fine job with my hair and I usually pass up the shot. I try to arrive a bit early(haircuts start at 9pm) to get on the top of her list. The crowd is never huge, usually just regulars at the bar and some guys playing pool. It’s always dark. Their draft and bottle and canned beer selection is above average and the prices are on the cheap side, which I can’t complain about. For a local crowd just outside the French Quarter, this is your spot. Watching Saints games in here is a good time too!

My friend told me he wanted us to go to his favorite New Orleans bar. It was our last day in town and he knew the type of bar I like to chill at. This bar was so cool. Just the right amount of neighborhood, scenester and seedy. Plus Abby the bartender poured great drinks, was friendly, and was easy on the eyes.

This was the first bar I set foot into when I got to New Orleans and I felt right at home. It was only me and one other customer and the bartender, whose name I’m almost entirely sure is Steve, was really nice and kept me company while I drank my beer. They have an interesting non-internet jukebox, which seems to be the norm in this city and makes for a great selection of things to choose from(not to mention an excellent method at crowd control). I decided to only play the third song down on albums I didn’t recognize(there were many) and it went pretty well! Would have loved to come back for their shrimp boil but I couldn’t make it. It’s a nice down to earth spot with friendly people.

Really dig the inside. its tall ceilings, many seats, good music, nice bar tenders and fun atmosphere. wish they had better beer selections, but it seems they give free food on certain nights which is a plus. also, gotta love the barber chair they have in the middle of the room.

Great Staff, Great People and Great Drinks. This is definitely a good start or a good end to your evening out on the town or a good place to beat the weather during the day with a good cocktail. Highly recommend

R Bar makes my world go round. I’ve been coming here for years, once alone or with friends, and now with my boyfriend and our dog a couple of times weekly. The bartenders, all of them, are great. They don’t mess around, and they’re no-fuss. But they pour a good drink or draft. The atmosphere, whatever they got projected on the screen, the jukebox, the pool table, it’s all a familiar, wonderful experience. The regulars are always entertaining, most people that come in are respectful and add to the great mood. I have been here for Mardi Gras, Halloween, New Years, pretty much every holiday or event in the city — and it’s still a place I long to return to again and again. We go Mondays for hair cuts, Fridays for the delicious food, and always keep tabs on the blackboard outside to know what’s happening that day. This last Monday we got amazing tacos just outside, something that normally isn’t happening that day of the week. R Bar is full of surprises. Sometimes there are dick heads that come in, but they don’t stick around. You come to this place for the simple, well-priced drinks and drink specials, you come back and back again for the family that becomes of these people. I know I am one of many that love this place and return to it again and again. Basically, you take from this place what you put into it. You stay respectful, have a good time, chat up the bartenders and regulars. They’re all good people any day of the week. Oh yeah, one of the rare places you can actually get a proper pour of Guinness. A god send.

I have been to this bar a bunch of times, but after last nights experience I will NEVER go back. I was sitting at the bar with a friend who went outside to smoke. While she was gone a fight broke out directly behind me. Of course that is out of the bar’s control, but the way they handled it was not. I caught a random elbow to the back of my head and felt pinned in my seat as they were right behind me. I asked the bartender to get me my tab immediately because I did not feel safe and wanted to leave immediately. They had broken up the fight once already but the guys came back in and they were doing nothing to get them back out. They just kept on pouring drinks because they were obviously more worried about making money than the safety of their customers. I had to ask multiple times before I actually got my card back and the bartender told me I was acting like a spoiled brat. While I don’t deny that I am one, it is was completely irrelevant in this situation. My response was I shouldn’t have to feel unsafe and he told me that I am always unsafe in a bar. He then told me to take my ass back uptown where I belong, which is all I was trying to do in the first place. I have never not left a tip before but I guess there is a first for everything. I have never dealt with a ruder bartender in my entire life. I don’t know how this loser even keeps his job.

First, I need to admit to you reader, when I visited this bar, I was on a crawl. In saying that, I can positively say that this was one of the best bars that I have visited in the Quarter, not entirely because of a classy atmosphere or incredible drink specials, but because of the people you meet! If you’re the kind of person who can strike up a conversation with anyone, welcome to a bar where it seems like almost everyone else shares that ability! It’s a great change of pace from Frenchmen, though it will still quench your divey desires. The only negative note I will make is the prices of beers, they’re a little high for the dive, but the people we met both inside and outside, including the very sweet bartenders, made up for it! I will certainly be visiting this bar again!

No stupid drinks, no crying and no assholes! This bar is by far one of the best places to get ‘shit canned like a local’ in NOLA. Location is dope(4 blocks from the French Quarter, 2 blocks away from Frenchman Street, plenty of late-night eateries around). Crowd is very representative of NOLA — a melting pot of all different walks of life. Drink prices are fair and you can’t beat the $ 6 High Life and Jameson R Bar Special! The cult classics from the 70s/80s being shown on the bar’s movie screen, pool table, poker machines and a solid juke box are all icing on the cake too…

Dipped into R bar after being turned off by the overwhelming crowds at the Frenchmen Street music clubs. R bar is a sweet spot just off the beaten path, but so close to it that you won’t go out of your way at all. I dug the dark atmosphere and solid playlist(rock/metal/punk smattering when we were in). Drinks were standard, prices not bad. Seating is a bit tough since the pool table dominates the center of the room and there are only a few highboy seats/tables other than the rail-which tends to fill up quickly. Felt like the kind of place, which as a local I’d probably frequent, but as a visitor dipping in for a quick drink felt like enough. Solid spot to start or wind down your evening.

Was visiting New Orleans for the weekend and opted out of spending hundreds of dollars on tickets for the Saints game. Instead, I did a quick web search for where to watch the game. I wanted something outside of the FQ, but close enough to walk easily. The R Bar was PERFECT. Walked in and grabbed a table where we could watch the game on the large projector screen and got some beers. I could tell everyone was local and knew each other, which is exactly the experience I was looking for! They had a spread of chips and dip, a life-size voodoo doll with the opposing team’s jersey, «Royal Roulette» spin wheel for $ 3(I landed on the R Bar Special — shot of Jameson and tall PBR). The Saints may have lost, but I had so much fun I couldn’t help but have a smile on my face for the rest of the day!

Great neighbourhood bar on Kerelec and Royal. This place was ½ a block from where we were staying. Old bordello décor with chandelier lighting and beat up bar– comfortable divey not gross divey. I liked that it’s the kind of place where people bring their dogs, and there’s a barber’s chair in front where you can get a haircut on Mondays. Great place to spend some hours drinking in a chill environment.

Dropped in on a Tuesday night with a date. We’ll call him M. I had started out drinking for the night with the Irish Channel stout, so I figured I should stick with beer. I hadn’t quite decided what I was getting when the bartender came to us. M pointed out that they had the Framboise Lambic. I prefer the Peche, but the Framboise was the only kind they had. Well, it’s still pretty tasty and I hadn’t had it in a while, so I decided to go with it, and it was perfect for where I was in my alcohol consumption in that moment. We sat at a table facing the bar and the screen, which had the ’78 Superman playing. It was kind of nice to have that there to joke about and things. The booth seating against the windows was comfortable and we enjoyed our time at the R Bar very much.

This is a great Marigny mostly locals joint that became our home base during recent week for Jazz Fest. Drinks are good, service excellent, and prices reasonable. Great vibe and low key atmosphere with great juke box and pool table. Had an issue with a patron who became increasingly annoying, and bartender was on top of it and threw him out before things got out of hand. On Friday night, do NOT miss the crawfish boil(when they’re in season). Honestly one of the best meals of my life. Bar pays for food, you tip the chef. I tipped him $ 15. It was sooooooo good. OK — for that I bumped ‘em up to five stars.

Though I rarely visit R Bar, I really like it when I do! And it’s 99.99% because of the people I meet/see there. I know it’s been described as divey, but to me, a divey bar has old grizzled men that sit at the bar drinking their $ 2PBR with their cigarette and only talk to the bartender. This place has always been busy on the nights I go, but the bar is still reachable. They have a good variety of beers from PBR to Pacifico. Though they aren’t $ 2, it’s worth it to hang out with the people that visit this bar. I «tipped» that on Mondays you can get a haircut, beer, and shot in the barber chair but it’s a haircut and a shot. I was told this by Kerry, a regular, who was so sweet and chatted me and my friends up while we sat in the chair. BTW the chair is SUPER comfy. He ended up giving my friend a beer while he sat in the barber chair so maybe that’s how you get a beer on Mondays. I also met a man with some seriously awesome face makeup/costume from Chewbacchus and a few friends that randomly popped up there! There is a pool table with just enough room to play despite a pretty packed bar. My main man played a couple of games with randos, all very nice. You also got some of ‘dem poker machines if you want to try your luck! Tons of seating for a bar with a lot of people in it. There’s also a great overflow onto the corner outside of the bar. I agree with Joshua B. that this is a great example of a New Orleans bar. You can chat up almost anyone in here whether it’s Kerry from down the street or one of the actors in town that’s trying to lay low at a packed bar. One FYI, there is a bathroom for Men and one for Women but one line sometimes forms. I had a guy try to bite off my left arm when I tried to create a Women’s line since there were less girls. Stand your ground, ladies! You have a right to a Women’s bathroom line too!

I usually come here on Mondays to get my haircut and a shot for $ 10. I like the way she cuts my hair and $ 10 is a really good deal. I like the R Bar because I feel like I’m really in a New Orleans bar. It has a good mixture of locals and tourist but everyone actually interacts and talks to each other. The R Bar is a really good spot to meet up with friends before heading out to see live music on Frenchmen. Sometimes a big name celebrity will stop by and play music off a computer and it becomes a club. This happened when the artist formerly known as Snoop Dogg came by. Cheap drinks, good atmosphere, and an inviting crowd — what more do you need?
