Me:“My Godson is making his First Communion this weekend and I need to get him a gift, where can I go around here” Other: «The catholic Book Store» Me: «That place sounds perfect what’s the name of it?» Other: «The Catholic Book Store» Me: «Right, what’s the name of the Catholic Book Store!!!» Other: «That’s the name! The Catholic Book Store!» Oh…I see. This place has every religious artifact you need for you grandparents and worried praying parents. I felt a little like Indiana Jones in here. They had terrific sets already put together for Baptisms and Communions. I really liked that! I love a good combo deal. They had relics of every Saint to pray to and why someone should pray to them. I was fascinated by all of the Saint Cards. One for everything! A missing item, a test at school, a worried mother; they had them all! But I couldn’t find the one to get a longer lunch hour so I had to head out. Their staff were very kind and if they didn’t have what I needed they were more than happy to order it for me. I was overwhelmed by all the items I could get my holy family members. It was not over priced at all either. I think Jesus rocks and all but sometimes his books stores are so over priced. Amazon is usually stiff competition for a book store. But I checked and the books were about the same on amazon as there were in the catholic book store known as the catholic book store. That prayer card worked! The Good: So many great items every Catholic book you can imagine Blessed items good prices Very nice customer service Had its own parking lot The Bad: takes a lot of time to go through everything! It is like a library, thankfully their staff is top notch The Ugly: I fear the devil and so I have no response here

I really love the selection at this store. It’s set up in a house at their newer location(3003 S. Carrollton), so it has a cozy feeling for browsing. This is where the seminarians get their text books. You are greeted at the front door by a display with the latest and most popular books. As you turn right into the biggest room, you see that they have a huge selection of books, sorted by category, and a few big comfy chairs to sit in while you flip through what you’ve gathered. They have a table in here that features books on a specific topic. I love that they have books of local interest(Henriette Delille, The Archbishop Wore Combat Boots) as well as an African section. As you walk out this room and away from the front door, you have lots of items created by different artists. They have nice crosses and other decorative items, some that support ministries in the poorest countries. As you explore the other rooms, including where you check out, you will find children’s items, rosaries, medals, prayer cards, and even a selection of used books. At the front counter they have jewelry, including non-religious, Nola-themed items. Check out their website for their events calendar, as they have authors come in and have holiday parties. You can also use your purchases to earn a discount on a future purchase with their punch cards. And if you don’t see what you want, they can easily order it for ya!

I must admit I haven’t been here since they reopened after Katrina. The bookstore is in the basement(above ground naturally) of a large house just off Carrolton Avenue and across from Notre Dame Seminary. Unlike the Pauline shop, this store does focus more on books and has fewer gift items.
