Oh, Jake’s. Sometimes I feel like my children keep you in business. We live a block away and I’m pretty sure they are in there daily. They come back with ice-cream, candy bars, an array of chips, and all the sugary drinks their hearts desire. I run over on occasion for a beer or some chips. Who am I kidding? I’m buying both. The beer selection is actually not bad for a c-store and you can always be sure to see some sweet, drunk neighborhood characters out front. Sometimes they’ll ask you to buy them a beer or give you a kiss on the cheek, but they are harmless and will make sure no one messes with you or your house. There is a deli area in the back, which I have yet to try, but overall I’m happy to have Jake’s on the corner. It’s one of the things that really reminds me every day that I live in New Orleans.

From the pictures posted and the reviews added on Unilocal about Jake’s, I feel like my experience was of an alternate universe. The shelves of items were all in complete disarray and the leftover lunch items looked like mush(granted, I was late for the normal lunch hour). Nothing at all like the experiences of my fellow Unilocalers. I quickly exited after making a lap or two around the joint and headed for my ever-faithful Winn-Dixie. Although this corner mart is super convenient, unless I’m looking for cold beer, cigarettes, ramen noodles, or one roll of toilet paper(they’re sold individually here, go figure), I’m not sure this is a good«grocery» spot for me. My inner ADD and OCD tendencies were just too overwhelmed! I’m hoping that my first experience was just an «off» day for Jake’s, and when I return at a later date for a quick beer run, I’ll be able to see/experience what everyone else has been raving about!

Jake’s Uptown Supermarket is a great corner store to have in my neighborhood. I literally live not even half of a block away, so it’s very convenient for me to run and grab whatever I need. Prices for grocery items are a little higher, but much easier than a trip to a huge store. Full selection of liquor and wine, and good assortment of beer as well. Excellent butcher shop in the back of the store, plus hot plates for lunch on the cheap. I’m there at least every other day to pick up something I need, and glad to have Jake’s in my neighborhood!

Jake’s is pretty good for finding groceries, maybe a little bit more expensive than far-away Rouses and Winn Dixie, but definitely cheaper than nearby Robert’s Fresh Market. I like that it’s right around the corner from my house.

Jake’s(aka Uptown Supermarket) is a corner market /meat deli /food deli tucked in the Leonidas neighborhood. It’s pretty much the place to go if you need snacks, drinks, actual food, or bulk pig tails(the porcine part, not the hairdo). As a bonus, the employees all seemed friendly and everything was very reasonable priced(a large lunch is $ 5.99 and included red beans and sausage, chicken, mac and cheese, sausage mashed potatoes, corn bread, and a drink). I can’t wait to go back during lunch and try their poboys!
