I met friends from Europe for dinner there. We were lucky enough to land a table outside in the rear. I had ravioli stuffed with prosciutto and cheese, unfortunately stuffed thinly. The sauce was nice enough. The witness seemed preoccupied. Not bad, but with the enormous amount of restaurants in nyc, I doubt I’ll be back.

Nice ambiance, the place was packed when we arrived. We opted to sit outside with the slight chill — they did have an overhead lamp to keep people directly under it warm, but it wasn’t enough to reach us 3 tables away from the front door. Ordered the Involtini Di Melanzane which is eggplant stuffed with ricotta and spinach. The problem with finding places on Unilocal is that it sets a certain expectation for your meal. I saw that Uva had thousands of reviews and a 4 star average, so it must be better than average, right? Not quite for the appetizer. I feel like it was a bit bland and missing any sort of flavor. The ricotta was soft and light, but I didn’t find anything particularly appealing about the overall dish that I would want to order it again. Had the Gnocchi Ricotta and Costte Di Manzo Brasate(Braised short-ribs) for the main entrees. I thought the Gnocchi Ricotta was pretty good. Gnocchi was light, not starchy, didn’t taste like it came out of a box. Good dish. The braised short ribs were cooked well, very tender and fell off the bone. The sauce — there was a slight bitter taste from the sauce that I couldn’t quite put my finger on. I used the potato cake to balance out that bitterness, but overall it was an OK dish. The service was quite good here. Overall, this is a good place to go for a date or something, where the memories of the food won’t wash out what you talked about.

I’ve been to Uva three times and have been thoroughly disappointed each time. In short, I think the ingredients are cheap and the nice décor and hip young crowd detracts from the decidedly mediocre cuisine. Here’s how a meal at Uva goes. You walk inside and a hostess informs you that you will have to wait to eat with the dozens of attractive young people seated inside. So you wait thirty minutes. Once you sit down, a waiter will quickly bring you factory-produced bread and encourage you to get wine. Many people near you will be drunk and casually well-dressed. It’s possible everyone at the table next to you will be discussing how hard it is to make so much money and work so hard in his or her twenties. You can try to listen instead to the tinder date to your right, but that’s hazardous. If you order pasta, you will get the equivalent of what you could make with grocery bought pasta, tomato sauce and some faux-truffle oil. You leave, feeling full and unsatisfied, wondering if you should have made different life choices.

Our experience at Uva was a mixed bag. It started out pretty badly, and ended quite nicely. We arrived on a Saturday night for a late dinner. I’d requested in my reservation to be seated on the back patio if possible, but we had to ask a few times to do that even though it had plenty of available seating. It was a very hot night in NYC and once we finally made it out to the patio, all of their fans were turned off, which made the atmosphere unpleasant. Our waitress brought over some tiny glasses of water and disappeared. We finished those, but were still super hot and dehydrated. We kept waiting for someone to refill our waters, but it clearly wasn’t going to happen. After about 10 – 15 minutes of not seeing our waitress, I waved her over. She asked if we were ready to order food. Honestly, we’d been so hot and dizzy we’d barely looked at the menus. I told her we urgently needed some water and asked if she could please get that for us. «I guess I’ll just take the wine menus, then,» she said. «No,» I responded. «We do want to order wine later on but we’re both dehydrated and really need some water first». She then proceeded to talk about the food for another minute instead of getting the water. Again, I said we were planning to order soon, but in the meantime we really needed some water. «I heard you the first time,» she snapped at us. …wtf??? In my opinion, this is super unacceptable. I’ve waitressed for almost seven years and have never snapped at a customer like that. Seriously, we were both sweaty and red-faced, we both repeatedly asked for water, and instead she got super pissy because we weren’t yet ready to order food or wine? I was shocked at how rude she was, especially at a nice restaurant like Uva. I considered getting up and leaving right then, not really wanting to deal with this woman for an entire meal. Thankfully, our waitress ended up getting replaced. Our new waiter was a guy named Jasper and he was a lot nicer. He was super attentive with the water and with the food, very friendly, and an all around great waiter. We ended up ordering the beef prosciutto appetizer. The arugula and mushrooms on it were good, although a bit too vinegary. To sum up the beef itself, boyfriend remarked that it tasted like«fancy beef jerky.» Pretty accurate. Nothing special. For dinner, we got the gnocchi di ricotta and the papardelle al ragu. The gnocchi was good — the truffle flavor was intense and it wasn’t over cheesy. However, it was so rich that it definitely gave me a bit of a stomach ache. The papardelle was also good. You can really taste the freshness of their homemade pasta and I thought the amount of sauce they used was perfect. The flavor was also nice, although it wasn’t anything new or interesting. I sound quite repetitive, but this is the best was to describe our actual meal: the food was good. It wasn’t amazing, but it was good. Additionally, by the time we started dinner, they had finally turned on the outside fans. This way, we got to actually enjoy the outdoor patio. It’s very beautiful, it’s just hard to love when you’re sweaty and dehydrated. Our experience at Uva became significantly better minus one rude waitress and plus some outdoor fans.

I thought the atmosphere of Uva was nice, but the food was about average. Another time I wish I could give half stars on Unilocal.I’d go with 3.5 stars if that was the case. I rounded up because my companion thought it deserved more credit. It was quite crowded when we arrived on a Saturday evening. Despite the estimated 30 minute wait, we were seated within 5 minutes in an outdoor patio at the back of the restaurant. The menu reminds of the old-fashioned ristorante’s you see throughout Italy, with a variety of authentic pasta, seafood, and meat dishes. We ordered: –Buratta barese: A must order for those who love cheese(and if you don’t love cheese, I’m sorry but we can’t be friends. I don’t want to hear that lactose intolerance nonsense, go buy some lactaid and pull yourself together). The tastes of yellow beef tomatoes and a slight drizzle of balsamic blended with the delicious mozzarella. The texture of the fava beans offset the creaminess of the cheese for a nice mix. –Gnocchi di ricotta: I felt it was a little too soft and crumbly, as I prefer a more fluffy and chewy gnocchi generally. The sauce was decent, but the ricotta cream and truffle oil flavors overwhelmed the taste buds after a few bites. I think it could have used some pepper or herbs to balance the butteriness of it. –Polpettine di vitello: The tomato sauce was wonderful. Savory, salty, flavorful. The veal meatballs weren’t bad, but I was hoping for juicier balls(hiyooooo). No but really, they could have been more tender. While I wasn’t overly impressed, I would probably return to try other dishes. I may have set myself up for disappointment by dining at an Italian restaurant in New York less than a week after returning from Italy. First world problems…

Quaint like you are in an old Italian village. The cellar is my favorite spot. Pasta is the best choice and definitely home made. Service is attentive and on point. Much better option than Pagani which is the sister place in the village.

I went here for my Boyfriend’s birthday and the thing that I LOVE about the this resturant is that it is aesthetically pleasing! It is such a classy, great place to enjoy an evening with friends. I highly recommend coming in at night because I felt like it was more pleasing during that time aesthetically. I ordered a birthday cake from a bakery(because they said they do not have cakes) so the charge $ 3 per person(including the birthday boy/girl)! But i must say they presented the cake in a very cute manner and plated it very well. I don’t know why this a «vegetarians go crazy for this place» because it is not vegetarian friendly. For main entrees we only had 2 choices as per the waiter. Lastly, found something hard in my pasta that nearly broke my tooth. When told the employee he asked if he can bring another dish… I said yes because yes that rock almost broke my tooth. Overall, I really like this place for the aesthetics.

Wow it gets packed fast! We went on a Wednesday night around 7 pm and managed to get a table without a reservation. Great ambience … It’s a little loud and crowded for some ppls taste but I was fine with the livelihood of it. The antipasto misto(prosciutto + cheese) platter for two was more like a platter for 5!!! It was huge! And for only 23 $ it was worth the $$ We also had the half moon mezzelune and it was great as well. Comes in 6 half moons. Decent size for the $ 20 price

Highlights: –Sundried tomato purée, pesto and pine nuts brushcetta — solid, nice flavored tomato spread bruschetta & pesto — feels light –Calamari grigliati — lightly breaded calamari with frisee salad — light, bright, slightly acidic, refreshing salad topped with sauteed calamari –Mezzelune Alla Boscaiola — half moon shaped ravioli filled with prosciutto and mozzarella served in creamy wild mushroom sauce — star of the meal today. Savory prosciutto and cheese ravioli. Lick to the plate wild cream sauce. Sauteed wild mushrooom on top. Mix them all together. Dayum! I could die happy –Brunch specials — 19.5 dollars for a brunch entry + side + cocktails — Pretty Good deal! However, the price at the menu may not be the most accurate. My mezzelune came up to $ 20 in the final charge. The menu says $ 19. Not a big deal, but dear restaurant management please update the menu book if the price changes! This would have been a 5 star experience, but your $ 1 difference costs you a star off your review. But regardless of the minor complaint, I am still a fan! Would be likely to return!

The Garden of Brunch… This very cool restaurant offers seating in the front of the restaurant for those who like to bring their dogs everywhere an inside that looks like an old school bar and an outside greenhouse with plants all around. I got to sit in the greenhouse which was absolutly beautiful because they open up the roof which gives you a nice breeze and rays from the sun so make sure to bring your sun glasses. When we got here we were greeted by a nice waitress who was also really funny. We both ordered from the brunch special which is a pretty good deal and comes with a cocktail, side, and, entrée. My entrée I got the Rustica frittate. which was italian bacon, mushrooms, artichokes, and smoked mozz with a side of olives and the argent cocktail. The frittate was a unique combination but came out very tasty and the olives were delicious with the cocktail hitting the spot. My girl got the frittate Bianaca — which was egg white, mushrooms, and spinach but she also got mozz with it with a side of polenta and the fragosa which she really like. Overall this place was awesome and I’ll be back, In short: — Delicious Food — Great Waitstaff — Very Cool ambiance if you get a seat in the greenhouse

I usually do not give five stars to places because I’m a snob and nothing is ever good enough for me. However, Uva takes the cake here. Hands down. I may have to say that out of all the restaurants in NYC, this may be my favorite restaurant and Italian food is not my favorite type of cuisine for the record. I have never, ever been disappointed with any of their dishes. They are open late and this is a huge plus especially in the UES. Perfect spot for a night cap, a date or a simple dinner. All their pastas here are made in house and it makes every pasta dish I’ve had a delight to try regardless of their toppings or pairings. The pesto pasta dish is my absolute favorite! Perfect amount of pesto and the pasta is light and flavorful. Their gnocchis are little balls of cotton in your mouth with the perfect amount of cheese and saltiness. Ugh. My mouth is salivating just thinking about it. Their crostinis are delicious but I may be biased here because I love any and all crostinis. For the cheese and wine lovers like myself. Surprisingly, their cheese selections are also a great combo! Just ask the waiter/waitress to surprise you with the best cheeses they have currently. You will not be disappointed. Their wine list selection is extensive and I’m sure will never disappoint you either. I’m a vegetarian but every time I come here I have to have some of their lamb meatballs. They are absolutely delicious. Every person who has ever tried them has also agreed with me. My mother who is an extremely picky eater and to everyone’s surprise dislikes Italian food, could not stop munching on these either. Must try! The deserts are also a great ending and a must try. Basically, everything here is spot on. Don’t bother being picky, just select anything on the menu and enjoy! I myself cannot wait to go back. See you soon Uva.

Came here on a Sunday night around 6:30 and the place was packed! Luckily there was only two of us so there was not a wait. My friend and I sat in the greenhouse/porch in the back. The restaurant was very attractive. The place looked very old money with an Italian flair. Our waiter was nice, although I did have issues hearing her at some points because the place was so loud and crowded. Here’s the food choices I made, and in detail: Appetizers: Appetizer focaccia bread with olive oil — bread was cold, didn’t seem fresh. I’ve had better appetizer bread. Caprese salad — not just your average caprese salad… Also came with slices of sweet peppers. Really added to the meal. Beautiful plating. Thin crust flatbread with olive oil and parmesan — very good, but I thought it could’ve used more flavor, and the high amounts of grated parmesan made my mouth dry. Maybe a little less would be better. Entrée: The salmon with honey Dijon — I can’t remember the exact name of this meal; in fact I can’t remember the name of anything I ordered because it was in Italian(Not a problem, just sorry I don’t have the exact names here). The salmon was fresh, the creamy, honey Dijon sauce with chopped red peppers(or was it tomato.) was very good. It came with a side of asparagus and leek. The leek was seasoned well but the asparagus was not. Overall, I enjoyed my time here at Uva but will say it’s not a place I’d go back to. It just wasn’t the best food I’ve ever had. The décor is wonderful, but for all the hype this place gets, it’s nothing amazing.

I love this place — one of my favorite restaurants on the UES. Dinner here is great. Perfect for a date night or special evening with family/friends! Especially during the spring and summer when you can sit on the nice open roof ‘patio’(it’s really just more of a back area in between the adjacent buildings, but the décor and atmosphere will make you forget you’re int he middle of the busy city). The food, of course, is so good! And they serve their full menu until 2 am(1am on Sundays). We tried: + Wild mushroom, arugula and parmigiano cheese bruschette — delicious! + Penne gratinate — simple and perfect! + Mezzelune alla boscaiola — delicious! + Coste di manzo brasate — delicious! Before 7pm they also have wine flights(3 glasses for $ 12-$ 18). I tried the Bubbly Flight, which was fun to try(though may not have been the perfect pairing for my food). Would recommend making reservations(they’re on OpenTable) or at least calling ahead to see what the wait is like before heading over.

I’ve reconsidered my take on the food here — it deserves a solid 4⁄5 stars. They key is to share your dishes and not get bored with just one dish. ps — their fig balsamic dressing and lava cake is to die for!

I won’t say it’s my fav Italian restaurant in NYC anymore, but I will say it’s still my fav in UES. I always get the same wine here which is Antigal Malbec. Love it. Highly recommend the stuff eggplant for appetizers.(It’s the 3rd on the menu) The ravioli was good but nothing I would rave about. We got the Brodetto Di pesce(seafood gumbo like) again. First one on the second column under entrees. Abundance of seafood is in this huge dish.

Started off with the sardinian flat bread with rosemary oil and flor de sel. Which we weren’t excited about at all. I think we misunderstood what we were getting, and were kind of expecting actual chewy bread. And a tomato soup, which I believe was a special that day. For the entrée I got the Mezellune all Boscaiola which was ravioli filled with prosciutto in a wild mushroom sauce. It was definitely yummy. The prosciutto inside give it a nice salty smoky flavor. The atmosphere was nice, we were able to sit outdoors in their patio in the back which is beautifully lit. And the service was okay, our server wasn’t the happiest person there.

With the large number of Unilocal reviews of Uva, I was expecting nothing short of a great experience food-wise here, but we left a little disappointed on a few points. Despite the slight disappointment, I still rounded up my review to 4 stars, although it was really a 3.5. We came here for a 6:30pm reservation on a Friday evening. The restaurant was semi-romantic, with a bar towards the front and a dimly-lit dining room in the back. The crowd was pretty diverse, in terms of the couples vs. non-couples. There were a few tables of 2, but there were also random folks at tables of 3 – 4 and even a large party of 10+ sitting behind us. The restaurant décor didn’t exactly scream Italian, despite the choice of food. The interior was primarily made up of bricks, wood and antiques and had a very ‘rustic’ feel to it. I was expecting something a bit more ‘modern’ and homey. It felt more like a Cracker Barrel to me. As for the stars of the show, the food? Eeehhhh. Overall, the food was good, but it didn’t blow us away by any stretch of the imagination. There was definitely 1 hiccup on their part. In addition, the food came out TOOTOO quick. Within 2 – 3 minutes of ordering, our appetizers came out. You ask who doesn’t like fast service at a restaurant, right? Well, this happens to be a pretty nice restaurant and their food should be made to order, but from the speed of the service, our assumption was that some of it was possibly pre-made, re-heated and they just placed them onto plates. So what did we order? Majority ruled here as we pretty much followed suit according to what a majority of other Unilocalers ordered/posted pictures of: Wild Mushrooms Bruschette — The Bruschette was served as an order of 4 pieces and were tinier than expected. Still, they were pretty good though and there was plenty of wild mushrooms and cheese on top. It was a nice light way to start the dinner off. Polenta Tartufata — The Polenta was VERY cheesy and the black truffle sauce mixed with the cheese gave it a very strong flavor. If you’re not a cheese lover then chances are you won’t like this. We liked it, but there was only so much of this we could consume. Good thing there was some bread on the table that we could soak it away with. Pappardelle Al Ragu Di Vitello — Out of all of the Unilocal food pictures, I saw this item posted the most, so I was expecting real good things from this and it did not disappoint. The pasta ribbons were well made and it mixed real well with the sauce. It could’ve used a little more meat, but overall, it was tasty and not overwhelming. Gnocchi Di Ricotta — Be warned. If you order the Gnocchi, DONOT order the Polenta as an appetizer like we did. Don’t get us wrong, the Gnocchi was excellent. The pieces were soft, creamy and it sent us into truffle heaven! However, it’s one helluva heavy entrée. There’s tons of sauce and plenty of Gnocchi. Cannoli — The one major gripe we had was with the Cannoli. I highly doubt it was only ours, but it was TERRIBLE. The Cannoli had a frozen taste to it, sort of like when something has just been taken out of a refrigerator. There were many reasons why we suspected this had been pre-made well in advance —- both pieces were TOO hard, they both had a bit of refrigerator/freezer frost on them and they were served to us immediately after we ordered them. Other than the Cannoli, the food we ordered was good. Keep expectations at a moderate level when dining here. Don’t expect to be blown away by any of the ‘authenticity’ of the food or service though. Just remember, you’re dining in Manhattan, not Italy.

We came here on a Saturday night, which is the worst thing you can do when you’re starving. We waited at least an hour. We were actually the very last people to be seated and by then, there were several tables free. We didn’t get any bread and when we asked for it, the waitress said they were out, but we saw other tables getting bread. The bus boy eventually brought us some. The food came out fairly quickly. The mushroom bruschette was cold and a tad bitter. I’m pretty sure it came from the fridge. My shrimp fettuccine was lacking in flavor. The shrimp itself was pretty good and marinated with seasoning, reminiscent of something I’ve had in Chinese restaurants. However, the shrimp did not save the pasta. That being said, this is one of my friend’s favorite spots. She swears by the veal, which I don’t eat. On the plus side, they have both Lambrusco and Moscato.

Ah, finally. Italian food at its best. Italian food has never been on my top list of cuisines that I love, but Uva has me sold. I was very excited to come here for dinner since I’ve heard nothing but great things about it from close family and friends alike. It was very easy to make a reservation for two on OpenTable. I arrived shortly after 5:30pm on a Wednesday evening and was greeted by the hostess. Interestingly as empty as the restaurant was at the time, I was not allowed to be seated until my friend arrives — luckily she did, 30 seconds later. I do understand to an extent and can try to look past it as I can see it being problematic when busy restaurants have customers holding up a table while their dinner mates«are on their way» or «almost here»… but seriously, when it is empty too? We were brought to our table, served water, and given a menu. After ordering and while we were waiting for our entrees to be prepared, we were given some complimentary bread with olive oil. Free as it may be, the bread was cold, hard, and stale while the olive oil was served plain. Oh well, at least I’m not tempted to fill my stomach with unnecessary carbs. We weren’t particularly hungry so we did not order any starters and went straight for the main courses. I ordered the«anello di capesante e speck» which is scallops wrapped in prosciutto over sautéed spinach and white wine sauce, my friend ordered the«brodetto di pesce» which contains various seafoods(scallops, shrimps, octopus, fish) served in a white wine and tomato broth with a side of ciabatta bread. My main course was an absolute delight. My favorite part was the sautéed spinach which I used to happily sop up the delicious, rich sauce from my plate and into my belly. The scallops were perfectly seared and not overcooked at all. Yum. My friend’s dish looked and smelled amazing but I did not try it since I am allergic to shrimps. She was very happy with her meal as well. The food is phenomenal but the service is a whole other story, particularly our waitress. We never caught her name but she is a young, thin blonde woman. We were getting really negative vibes from her and it made me very uncomfortable. I would see her rolling her eyes from across the room. Was it something we did? Was it because we did not order wine nor any starters? I’m not sure. It was so just weird. She even appeared so annoyed when I had asked for a dessert menu and chose not to order anything afterwards. I almost felt like I was bothering her. Our waitress and the hostess just gave me this feeling that this restaurant is really pretentious — I did not appreciate that. I did, however, thought the bus buys were very attentive and hardworking. I also liked how, on seperate times, a middle-aged man and woman would walk to the tables to make sure everything is going well. Overall I would certainly come back for the food. The atmosphere was charming as well, nicely dimmed with a rustic feel — perfect for any get-togethers whether it is a date or just catching up with a small group of friends. Aside from our rude waitress who clearly is not cut out to be a waitress, the service from others were well-received. Prices are fair.

I grew up on the UES, but whenever I visit my family now, I always find it difficult to find good restaurants in that part of town. On my last visit, Unilocal came through with the highly rated UVA. UVA, is a small place bursting with ambience. You feel more like you are sitting in a dining room in Tuscany than in a restaurant in the middle of bustling 2nd Avenue. The décor is «rustic shabby chic» with exposed brick walls, wood tables, & decorative chandeliers. We arrived about 4:30pm on a Sunday to an almost empty restaurant. By the tine we left it was packed with people waiting at the door. I don’t believe UVA takes reservations for small parties so I suggest getting there early if you do not want to wait. Our server was not overly friendly, but was very efficient. I was with a friend I hadn’t seen for a while and we wanted to take our time. Our server was respectful of that and did not rush us, even when the place started to get busy. For a small place menu is huge, with flatbreads, focaccia, cured meats, cheeses, appetizers, & mains. We started with the«Carta Da Musica Condita» = Paper Thin Sardinian Flat Bread. We had it with extra virgin olive oil and parmigiano cheese. It was so simple, but crispy and delicious. For mains we tried two pastas. I had the Pappardelle al Ragu Di Vitello: Homemade pasta ribbons with ragout of veal and montano cheese. It was very good, but I have had better(hence the 4 star rating). No, this exceptional homemade pappardelle I had recently was not in Italy, but in downtown Miami at a little hole in the wall called Vero. If you are in the area I highly recommend it, especially if you can get their lunch specials. My friend ordered Mezzelune alla Boscaiola: Ravioli filled with prosciutto and mozzarella in a creamy mushroom sauce. I tasted it and one ravioli was enough. So good but the filling and creamy sauce made the dish way too rich for my taste. There are so many items I look forward to trying on UVA’s menu. Along with takeout Chinese from Evergreen, UVA will become a ritual on our future visits to the UES.
