The USS Growler is part of the USS Intrepid experience on the west side highway. As a native New Yorker I have never been and am Excited to share! Came here in support of fleetweek 2015. Size matters — before you are allowed to buy your ticket, you have to be able to fit through the doorway/porthole or what I call wormholes. It’s very narrow and a healthier sized person may have difficulty. Also– if you don’t fare well in tight/closed spaces, you may want to pass this exhibit. The submarine has trained staff to educate and answer questions for you which is cool. Since this is a submarine, guess what… It’s partially submerged. You don’t notice until you’re leaving and you’re taking in the views from above. You’re asked not to touch but there’s so much to see and touch! Pictures are allowed. The most amazing thing to me was the setup of their battlestations/war rooms. So small, actual paper maps of territories. Also the technology back then was so basic, scary to think we almost got into WWIII. The sleeping bunkers are tiny! Being 5’11 I didn’t think I would fit(shhhh don’t tell) I did! Great experience, better than a museum. You have to do it at least once! Do this first then go to the Intrepid to explore. Good for kids– be patient though. You can’t really walk past a slower person because it’s so tight. Tips– No heels!!! Lotsa of very narrow/steep steps. Not handicapped friendly.
