I wanted to see what this whole pilates thing was about after hearing it would be good for strengthening my core and helping out my back as I have the back of a 100 year old man. Ended up getting a private lesson to help me get a feel for it and had a great experience! Kristin took the time to work me through all the exercises and teach me how the heck you maintain proper form. Definitely was not prepared for struggling that much and glad I did it!

Beautiful studio — but appears to cater only to the rich with an emphasis on private session. Their group class schedule is minimal(no morning class). Never imagined Pilates was so «exclusive«- very disheartening. Occupy Pilates serving the 1%…bummer, such a beautiful place.

Unfortunately my search for great pilates at an acceptable price point continues in manhattan. In my dust… yogaworks pilates factory, erika bloom no sweat pilates and now True Pilates East(courtesy of gilt). Someone please point me to a studio!!! One plus about TPE is that their mat classes are limited to 5 people and happen at towers. The tower mat was too cushiony for my liking(felt like I was sinking into a mattress), some springs were creaky/old and my mat at the end ran into the wall — no room to extend my leg in forward kick. Superficial stuff aside, with a class as small as 5 people, I really thought there was going to be more personal attention /corrections. The teacher just kind of queued everything but didn’t really talk through how to do stuff effectively or more effectively. She kept praising the class at how amazing everyone looked. I guess the bar isn’t too high… in fact, I was asked if I was a pilates instructor. Are you kidding me? Maybe the nicest compliment I’ve ever received but utterly misguided. The studio layout was nice — airy, two levels of reformers, multiple cadillacs, and some equipment I’ve never seen before like a guillotine. They only have group classes once a day in the evening(mat only) and other than that it’s privates/semi-privates throughout the day. The mat classes are $ 35 bux a pop($ 19 gilt special). Considering I experienced much better teaching in SF for half the price, even with cost of living adjustment which is not all that different, this is not my spot.
