Pretty good! This place is a favorite of friends who live nearby, and I am likely to return if I have a hankering for Thai food in the West Village. Pad thai, contrary to what others here have said, is pretty good — not great, but can pad thai be truly *great*? Soups are delicious, and they aren’t stingy with tea service. I’m almost 5’8″, and I was almost too tall for the bathroom, so be careful! We also had a celebrity sighting here: Guillermo Diaz, who played Mexican drug lord Guillermo on Showtime’s «Weeds» Good stuff, kids!

At first I thought that this place was cursed. The name Toons reminded me of a Bugs Bunny feature, and then I thought, perhaps the name was a play on music, denoting a jazz or perhaps blues café. Wrong. The name of the restaurant is really Ginger Toons. Hmm… now I understand. Walked in with my co-worker around 8:30PM on a Tuesday night, there were 2 other people dining there. I ordered the chicken curry with brown rice. Curry is hard to mess up, this one was ok, the chicke was fine, there were veggies, but the curry itself was spicy. I’m Asian, I have a built in tolerance for these kinds of dishes. Right? Wrong again. The curry kicked my a**! I was gulping my water after every bite, so much so that I needed my glass refilled every 5 minutes. Back to the food, not bad at all. The prices were reasonable, $ 12 or so for the curry. The décor was simple, a lot of red. The view of Bleeker and Bank street was impressive, even more so considering this restaurant had a corner spot. I wonder why there aren’t more people. There’s a lot of foot traffic but not a lot of people. I’ll bet if they changed their name to reflect the food that they cooked they’d have a warmer reception in the neighborhood.

My husband and I wandered in here late on a Sunday night and were very impressed. Initially we were drawn in by the sight of the jazz trio through the windows and the lack of a crowd. I also don’t understand why this place isn’t more crowded because the food was great! We had summer rolls to start and they were perfect. For the main dish I had scallops with vegetables. The scallops were large and plentiful and the dish was loaded with stir fried vegetables. My husband ordered a spicy beef and wide noodle dish, also delicious. We were surprised by how large the portions were. We thought the service was fine. We were the only people in the place at the time so we were well tended to. I’m looking forward to visiting this place again.

Came here again last week with a big group and was not disappointed with the service, unlike last time. The service was impeccable, quick and orderly. The quality of food was at par with 4 star Thai restaurants. the only factor I’d wish is to increase the size of the portions. A $ 11 noodle should have more than 3 pieces of shrimp.

I see so many good reviews here and I’m glad because the people that run this place are really nice, but I have to give this place only two stars. But mainly because when I go out to dinner the service has to be good. Not absolutely phenominal, but fair. At Toons, they absolutely failed at service. Here’s what happened: My friend and I walk into the restaurant and were greeted by a really nice guy. He seats us at a nice table in the center of the room and we begin to look over the menu. The dishes and bar menu look great! But when the waitress comes to take our order we’re not prepared. What happens? She never returns. After about 5 minutes we call someone else to the table. We order two mohitos and some appetizers, but we were still trying to decide on our entrées. What happens next? The drinks sit at the table in the back room and no one brings them to us. We’re just staring at the drinks and salivating. A few minutes later someone picks them up and walks back into the kitchen. There go our drinks. The waitress we spoke to first comes back and asks us if we’re ready to order. We tell her yes, but we never got our drinks or the appetizers.(By this time we were there about 25 minutes.) She takes our orders and someone comes back with the mohitos, but brings them to the other table. They tell her they didn’t order them. Someone approaches her and directs her to our table. Actually, as I write all this down, I’m pretty amused. The next annoying thing was that it took quite some time to get our entrées and then finally the check. It wasn’t only our table that was dumbfounded by all this. I noticed some other tables looking around like, «What the hell is going on here?» Perhaps they were short-staffed, but the service was completely disorganized. The food was not bad, but sort of mediocre. The drinks, however, were really good. Based on the service alone, I wouldn’t risk coming here again. There’s so many other places to experience. But as I said, the staff was really sweet, but clueless. They need a manager with experience, I think. Rob

Sunday evening meal here(after a gig at Poisson Rouge) was exceptionally good. Atmosphere: neat lighting(check out the bathroom). Unobtrusive live music from a jazz trio in the corner. Started with pork dumplings and deep fried shrimp, respectively meaty and sizzling. Sweet & sour style chicken entrée was light and crispy, sauce was just the right side of fruity. Definitely going back to burn through some more of the menu. It’s making me hungry already and it’s only breakfast time.

Thai Ice Tea is very, very good. Tom Kha soup is AMAZING. Pad thai was alright, I didn’t like the way the noodles were cooked… almost too hard like al dente pasta. Service was attentive and prices were reasonable.

Please do not eat here. I’ll start by saying the food was delicious and service, although slow, was very nice. That said, we could have done without the cockroach that was kind enough to hold off on crawling up the wall behind me until I’d taken my last bite. The waiter was apologetic, but hardly horrified or perhaps worse, not terribly shocked. You *might* possibly say it happens to the best of ‘em, but it didn’t help matters when we couldn’t get the attention of the waitress because she was dutifully wiping down the next table — with the previous patron’s leftover drinking water! Although I can’t really hold the restaurant responsible for my next point, we could have done without the seemingly innocent elderly man two tables away sharing stories of his ex-girlfriend’s sexual indiscretions. I got the sense he was a regular.

I have what one would call a mild obsession over Thai food. So i was excited to try this place out. I went for dinner on Sunday evening around 7pm. They were about 2⁄3 full but had plenty of room to accommodate our party. I ordered Pad Thai. It was fantastic. I have had quite a bit of Pad Thai in my life, and it definitely would be in my top 5. The veggie dumplings were a tasty prequel to a fantastic meal. That, accompanied with a few pomegranate martinis from their full bar, kicked the meal off to a great start. My only complaint, which is why i didn’t go for 5 stars, was that we were there for a little over 3 hours, for what should have been a 1 ½ hour meal, due to slow service. This is something I have heard from many people. It seemed that there was only 2 – 3 people managing the entire place. But the again, don’t we all need a chance to spend more than 10 minutes scarfing down food. If you are going to go to Toons, think of it as a chance to spend quality time with friends while experiencing some of the best Thai in the city. JUST make sure you plan ahead when ordering and asking for your check and things will run smoothly.

Chose this place with my friend last night after wandering around a bit in the neighborhood peeking into restaurants. It was a good find! We ordered the chicken pad si yew and spicy tofu/peppers/onions. Both were very tasty. The atmosphere was nice and the live cello music was a surprise but definitely a plus!

Came here Sunday night and knew it was going to be open(based on previous reviews from Unilocal)!! The atmosphere is incredible. Warm and friendly enviornment and the service is very friendly. I question the lack of crowd for this place because it is in a great location and has excellent food. I had one of their specials: The Honey Duck plate. Really good flavors and nicely prepared. I recommend getting some Jasmine Rice to go along with it. My boyfriend had the Sweet and Sour Pork with Jasmine Rice and he said that this is the BEST sweet and Sour sauce he’s ever tasted. I tried it and agree. It has just enough of each flavor so it is not too overpowering of sweet or sour. To top everything off we were accompanied by live jazz music in the background. Loved it. OH and the bathrooms btw are awesome, don’t forget to check them out! :)
