Tomiya

This is a Japanese convenience store – a small one at that. Limited selection: Small (5-​lb) bags of rice, soy sauce, freezer items and some ready-​to-​eat items (which they can heat up for you) but in limited variety. If you need something quick (or else), and happen to be passing by, you’ll be grateful that it is there.

A bit quirky, and not just because most of the people working there (I have seen quite a few different ones) don’t speak English that well.

It is kinda hidden, and you have to look carefully to find this place. It’s a tiny little Japanese convenient store with some bento during the lunch time. The lunch items were extremely limited in the beginning, but now the selection has expanded, and they even have bentto sign in Japanese outside of the store now. I think they prepare the food downstairs at the Tommy Jazz bar, but that’s only my guess.
I agree with the reviewer below that the selections are still limited compared to Dainobu, but hey — I am not walking a few blocks down when I am looking for a quick fix. I often get a giant big bomb shaped riceball, which has four different ingredients inside. It’s good enough for me.
The staffs are very friendly although some of them seems to not know English very well. Good people and good service overall.

Unless you are dying to get you quick fix of Japanese snacks and cup o noodles with a minimal selection, walk a few extra blocks to Katagiri or Dainobu. Both of these are almost equidistant from Tomiya and are much more likely to leave you satisfied. The only things that Tomiya can be guaranteed to offer are chips, dried ramen noodle cups, and seaweed snacks. Even if you were trying to look for instant miso soups, you are not likely to find one that is MSG free.
Junk food indulgence is where Tomiya excels. For a diverse selection of Japanese snack lovers that yearn for a mere hint of healthy eating, trek those extra steps!

Neighborhood gem for Japanese products. The block is full of eateries and now I can get Japanese snacks too!!!

i like this place, its really small but nifty. it brings you the japanese things you want. i like their chips a lot. its quite expensive but of course you are in the city and its hard to find these things. i got calbee chips and man they were great. thanks tomiya. stay up! 2 calbee for $ 5. also its closed super late. around 3am!
