It smells bad, the crowd is loud and uninteresting, the cocktails are all sweetened — not one single option on the menu was syrup free, the bartenders were bored and not at all engaging. It’s completely overhyped and lives up to the Meatpacking District credo — pretentious, expensive and lacking any substance.

After several minutes searching for this place inside Chelsea Market I finally consulted Unilocal and realized that there’s actually a separate entrance for the Tippler outside the market along W 15th St. Finding what I was looking for, I descended the stairs into the Tippler’s beautiful cocktail bar. Tippler is known for their creative drinks so when asked by the bartender what I’d like I mentioned bourbon and that I’d try anything he thought would mix well with it in a cocktail. Half smiling the bartender went to work mixing my drink. I’ll be honest, he went so fast I missed nearly everything that went into it but the result, fantastic! Refreshing with a slight bite on the palate. Price reflects the craftsmanship. I just wish I could of spent more time here, but being on a schedule I finished my drink and headed out bookmarking this spot for a future visit.

I will seek out any speakeasy. I like the idea of them. This place is not easy to find. I think that makes it half the fun though! It’s near Chelsea Market. I could tell you more, but the success of locating these places is half the reward. If I could flash back to the 1920’s for a week, I would. I want to wear a flapper dress and go to underground places likes this. The drink menu is unique. Employees hustle and are attentive. It’s dark. Seats are usually available. There’s a charging station outside the place where you can pay to charge your phone. The bathrooms look like those of a former school. Have fun and good luck finding it!

Cozy, old antique, dim light vibe as soon as you walk in! The bar itself is pretty spacious with tables to the side and round tables in the middle, you shouldn’t have trouble finding yourself a seat on a weekday night. This place is sorta expensive($ 20 for a long island. Wohhh. He even warned us the price before we got it.) But they make it stronggg. So you sorta? get your money’s worth. Shots are ~$ 10 and they have free cucumber water to the side of the bar. I’m a big fan of the design and would come here again. Like I said before, kinda pricey but you sort of expect it when you go in anyway.

This place has a cocktail for everyone, mine had pickle juice, hence became the pickle man. Location-wise, it is right off Chelsea Markets, yet inconspicuous enough to miss it if you are just casually walking by. We managed to score some tables around 10pm, which wasn’t crowded at all at the time. The decors resemble a library with minimalist wooden tables, bookshelves and the random placement of hard-cover books all around. Compared to other popular spots nearby, this one is low on the decibel scale, no loud music and little trouble hearing others. All in all, this is a nice place to check out if you want to avoid the rowdiness of the crowd above.

Great place if you like condescending bartenders. Smelled terrible coming down the stairs into this basement speakeasy at 600 pm on a Saturday, should have taken the hint and moved on. First round of drinks was tasty and creative. Soft pretzel was delicious. The second round was soured by the bartender that added ice cubes to top off a drink and made one drink wrong. Homeboy then asked my buddy and me «where you guys from?» As he handed us the bill. Guess we looked like tourists. As I marveled at the $ 115 tab, he then hovered over me and told me «a lot of love went into those drinks, I can tell you’re debating how much to tip.» I replied that i was just surprised, where i come from drinks are $ 5. He said«well, you’re not where you come from.» Of course i expected to pay more, but what I an asshat. Won’t be coming back.

My girlfriends and I waited for about 20 minutes before we were let in. It was pretty packed but I don’t blame them since it was a Saturday night. I wanted to try the«Princess Buttercup» which is made with brown butter-washed buffalo trace bourbon, lime, house made chamomile cordial, lavender and egg white! Doesn’t that sound super interesting? Unfortunately, they were out of the bourbon that is used for that drink. Instead, I tried the«Williamsburg Whammer» made with rye, sweet vermouth, strawberry, yellow chartreuse, campari, angostura & mole bitters. I was not a big fan of this drink. The bitters overpowered the taste of everything else from my opinion. I would like to give this place another try on a less crowded night. Probably on a weeknight?

Loved this place… Creative cocktails(there’s something for every palate!), beautiful ambience with the fairy lights and speakeasy feel(warm, cozy but some may find it too dimly lit), completely happening vibe(got very crowded and noisy by midnight though). Their cocktail menu is refreshed every 3 – 4 months, and everything we tried was great! My Girlfriend Lives in Queens packs a punch and the Whammer was deceptively sweet! Other aspects, let’s see: The meat and cheese board was good quality, service was pleasant and our waitress had a knack of appearing when we needed her(saw some of the previous reviewers called out service as the weak link, and I can see how that might be the case for folks without a table). The space is large, but the underground unmarked spot gets crowded on Saturday nights. Luckily we came just before the crowds, so had a nice table. Forgettable music — mostly an attempt to drown the noise. Love the Chelsea neighborhood — plenty of options nearby if you decide this place isn’t for you! I give the overall experience 5 stars — we’ll definitely be back!

This is one of those places that you go to for the aesthetics and atmosphere. It’s gorgeously decorated and warmly lit inside but rather loud on a Saturday or Friday night. I’ve tried a few drinks there and my recommendation would be to just get a beer. All of the cocktails try to be experimental but end up just being a bit odd. I got«my girlfriend lives in queens» and it basically tasted like I was drinking sesame dressing. The crowd is definitely an interesting mix. There’s either well established professionals or younger looking frat bros and young ladies looking to impress said bros.

I’ve been here twice, once a year or two ago and again recently. Both times, I’ve really liked it. I don’t recall what I got the first time but this last time I got the Cream of the Crop and tasted their homemade Fireball shot and a friend’s Grounds for Divorce. The Cream of the Crop is deceptively strong. It tastes very sweet, not to mention delicious, but I got a pretty decent buzz from just one. It’s definitely worth $ 13, unlike a lot of other bars which water them down. The Fireball shot is delicious, so I’d definitely like to try that one again. Grounds for Divorce lives up to its name: although it’s in a small quantity, it’s easily one of the strongest drinks in the house. The bartenders are friendly and put so much effort into the beautiful presentation of the drinks despite the place being busy on a Saturday night. The atmosphere is very nice and chill, even with the crowd, and it’s never too loud that you can’t talk to the person you’re with. All in all, it’s a very enjoyable place to have a good drink and hang out.

Been meaning to try this place for a while and glad I got to go! Cool, large basement space. No trouble finding a seat on a Friday night. Easy to hear people talk and my nice pear cocktail was yummy.

What a nice place to gather for fine refreshments! The atmosphere and beverage quality are major attractions for me. I would note that the service is the weaker link and could see where one may drop a star. Given the great location, I was immediately surprised by the amount of available space at tables. Not as in «void of crowd» but rather not the«shoulder to shoulder» action that is typical of good beverage service establishments in NYC. Most impressive to me was the lack of attitude from the customers and the servers. Relaxed and open is the theme. The VIBE here at the The Tippler is excellent and lends itself to an ATMOSPHERE that is heavy on relaxation. Mind you, there are boisterous characters but it is «good fun» as opposed to «obnoxious». Walking down the entry stairs to subterainean den, the walls and support columns are brink, the furniture is wooden, the carpets are nice(probably Asian although I’m a little fuzzy today). Tables surround the open floor and are spaced well enough for comfort unless the group is six or more. The lighting is overhead and dim hanging from dark metal fixtures(ummm, or so I recall). This was a special event night and we consumed many BEVERAGES. Being excitable people on this topic, we tried several and they were all prepared well. Mrs G tried one of house concoctions whilst the rest of us tried a series of favorites(Sazerac, Old Fashioned, Manhattan, Vesper, Boulevardier). Yours truly tried the Double Chocolate Porter which was from an unknown(due to memory) brewery. We stayed quite a while and tried some FOOD which was better than expected. The range of selections is not large. They keep it simple and higher quality. White Bean on toast and the pretzel were memorable. I don’t normally go for pretzel but this one was excellent. Realize that this is a beverage establishment that serves food so, don’t expect a phenomenal meal. Lastly, the SERVICE was inconsistent. While one of my Unilocal friends had a bad service experience due to behavior, in my case, it was perfectly friendly but there was not enough of it. The Tippler should put one(or even two) additional table server on the floor. The table adjoining our was going to the bartender rather than wait for the table service. Lastly,(again lastly), whether it was our over-indulgence or their poor shift scheduling, we managed to sit through three rotations of servers. We closed the tab each time. That said, I really had a great time here and knowing the service tendency, I would have no problem looking past it.

In the bowels of Chelsea Market, the Tippler is located underground in a historical and charming space. They take their cocktails seriously and offer craft beers, wine and snacks. Friday night, we came with a party of 10 for drinks, and it was fun! After 5 minutes waiting outside, we were downstairs. 10pm and it was prime drinking hour. The space is very typical of trendy bars today that pay homage to a bygone era: brick archways, cast-iron fixtures, and playful Sistine Chapel knockoffs point their way across the roomy ceiling. Drinks were good and served quickly despite the crowd. The atmosphere is cozy and offers some couch seating in addition to their bar seats. Great spot for some good drink! A cute little gem hidden(what seems like) under Chelsea Market ha. Local beer on draft and some fun cocktails for sipping. Just a cool place to escape and chill with your homies. There’s some legit tunes playing in the background but low enough to carry on your convo. It’s dark but the lighting is warm and the ambiance is somewhat cozy but industrial. I did not get a Pretzel the last time I was here and I will be going back for one because they look bomb! Go chill at The Tippler!

A nice underground NYC bar located right next to Chelsea Market! Coming here on a Saturday night around 9:00PM, this place definitely«hopping». Upon entering, coat check is available to the left and the bar is to the right. Note that when leaving later in the night, there is a line outside, but that does speak to its popularity! BAR: Service is spot on. The bartenders here are solid and do not really hold back on the alcohol. Grab a drink menu from the front to see what cocktails you want, but they have very unique drinks compared to your standard cocktail bar. Everything from an adult style horchata to a green tea vodka cocktail, this place is trendy! Overall, very spacious and the ambiance is nice. There are tables on the perimeter and the middle standing tables have hooks on the bottom.

Quite an overdue review but feel this place deserves the kudos! Came here on a first date after reading the rave reviews(and bizarre cocktail list!) and enjoyed it immensely. I ordered the Booty Collins and was blown away. Never in a million years did I think these ingredients could make sense together… But they did! The ambiance and service were wonderful as well — definitely a *cool* place to have in your back pocket to impress friends/dates. Keep it up!

We had kind of a alum night out in this cute bar. I can hardly tell how spacious this place was until I stepped inside and got wowed. Decoration was intimating and relaxing and bartender nice and helpful. I am not a drinker myself so I just watched my friends drinking. They did have a long cocktail list that can either be fruity or strong so everyone here got pretty satisfied. I really hope they could bring in more sit-down type of tables so that we could order real food and relax more.

This is one of the cool bars in West Village that isn’t impossible to get into and still serves a good cocktail. It’s right by Chelsea market and a little easy to miss if you aren’t paying attention. I warn anyone wearing crazy shoes, there will be a fair amount of stairs to get to the bar itself. The vibes are pretty cool. It’s a trendier place with a lot of standing room. The cocktail selection isn’t as big as other places but for the price, it’s definitely worth coming here. The service is standard. Not the best ever but you could easily do worse. It’s a chill bar and the service maps the vibes. It’s also a great date spot… and a short walk to the High Line.

This is a really cool speakeasy with good music, lots of beautiful people, and fun cocktails. It was a bit hard to find but well worth the search. We decided to head there before dinner on Sat night a few weeks ago. The place was crowded with a really diverse mix of folks in their mid 20s to mid 50s. Some wearing jeans and others wearing nice jackets and cocktail dresses. There were also two bachelorette parties going on with ladies in pink tiaras. The most annoying most of this place was trying to get to the bar to get drinks. Super crowded. Of course, it takes longer to make all those fancy mixologist creations. I did really enjoy my two roses are red and violets are blue cocktails. Overall fun spot to grab a drink before or even after dinner.

Every time I come here, I imagine some guy in an old-timey, 1920’s voice yelling, «THETIPPLAH» and I can’t help but laugh. Okay, I’m done. My first visit to the Tippler a few years ago was actually a very reluctant one, given its location in Meatpacking, steps below Chelsea Market. I thought I was going into an overcrowded, underserved tourist trap, especially at midnight on a summer Saturday, but I was very surprised to find a fairly large space that wasn’t too crowded, and had many different openings to get a craft cocktail. There are quite a few tables and barstools too, so finding a place to sit usually isn’t too difficult. The place has a bit of an old speakeasy feel with the wooden décor, but since all the upholstery and finishing is incredibly well-maintained, you also get a trendy and upscale vibe. They do play some pretty good music here, and although the space isn’t actually that conducive to dancing, you could probably make it happen at 1am on a weekend night. The cocktail menu is very inventive and full of interesting ingredients, and while I haven’t tried every single cocktail, the ones that I have tried are always very well balanced and not overpowering in any which way. As a result nowadays, I usually ask for an old-fashioned because I know they’ll take care of it. Pretty much all the bartenders are very qualified to make quality cocktails, so make sure to tip accordingly. I’ve actually never once ordered the snacks here, but all the dishes that I’ve seen come out have always looked pretty good. The prices are right on par with most cocktail bars($ 13), and with the craft and quality of ingredients involved, you can allow it. Since moving to Chelsea, the Tippler is one of my go-to places for small group get-togethers and even dates. Even though the space is so large, you can still have intimate conversations because the tables are pretty secluded and on the side. I still prefer coming on weeknights, because it’s a little less crowded, and it’s always nice having a place to sit when you’re trying to have a conversation. I also like that you don’t really need reservations, and not having to wait in line in Meatpacking is somewhat of a unicorn. So to you all, feel free to come by, but not on weeknights when I’m there.

Through a random side door and down the stairs? Thank goodness I was brought here because I would never expect such a cool venue on the side of Chelsea Market. Such a gorgeous speakeasy venue, great staff, well-made drinks! We got there pretty early so it we had the place to ourselves; lucky us. I’m sure this place fills up but won’t know for sure until I come back. Ironically, I had to cut my visit short because I had to head over to a YEE.
